Because I've watched Torres and know he is very good. Timber also has the height issue, which whatever anyone says is an issue in the Premier League. To be fair I should have mentioned this in original post.

Phil Jones is way over 6ft, not 5ft 10.
Shaw is listed as 6ft 1 (which is very doubtful) and Jones towers over him. Google heights are so often complete nonsense.
By the same token I suppose Timber may be taller than he's listed. He's certainly not good in the air though judging by his aerial stats, and the eye test suggests he's very short for a typical centre back when you watch him play.

Lads please, it's not about height!!!! He's objectively bad in the air. Nobody mentions Phil Jones' height because aerial duels are not a standout weakspot for him. Victor Lindelof is 6ft 2 and people mention his weakness in the air ALL THE TIME so it's not like it's a non-issue. Can people stop making out like Timber is the subject of some sort of height-ist discrimination?

On the flipside - Timber is younger, has worked successfully with Ten Hag, and can also play RB.
The truth is both are going to be risks since neither has stepped foot in the PL.
He's a very interesting player, but I can't help think the figures bandied about (43m quid) are quite steep given his recent rise to prominence in a non-elite league. Two years left on his deal, while Gravenberch with a year left admittedly but a higher profile prospect is going to Bayern for 20-25m. Is this the United tax in effect?
Gravenberch only has a year left on his contract which would play into the fee, but you're right it is steep.
Ajax got bigger fees for de Ligt and de Jong but they'd almost reached the CL final and were regular starters for the Netherlands at the time...
Gravenberch would have been €60m with a multi year contract. €35-40m you're not paying any tax whatsoever. Ten Hag wont pay too much anyways as he wants to strengthen hisnsquad as much as possible and his initial budget doesnt seem that high. Ten Hag obviously will have a good idea what Ajax is really expecting.

Alright, let's leave the height issue aside because of Google discrepancies, whether or not it passes the eye test, or height discrimination. Let's just look at the supposed aerial stats. I don't know how that squawka chart is drawn but based on the stats from squawka, Timber's aerial duels success rate of about 60% is truly bad. In fact, it's so bad it's similar to Laporte, Ben White and Eric Dier, the most played CBs at 3 of the 5 clubs above us in the league. No point comparing to VVD (77%) who most would consider to be the best CB in the world. Rudiger and Maguire who for all the criticism is still very strong in the air are both at about 73%.
Now I am not claiming Timber to be anything great in the air. But I looked through the main CBs in the top half of PL and everyone not VVD/Rudiger/Maguire showed stats in the 50s and 60s percentile. Does that mean to say there are only 3 CBs from City down to Wolves that are not bad in the air? I don't even dare to check out what kind of stats CBs at the lower half of the table are posting.
FYI, CR7 who is often regarded as one of the best in the air has a 40-50% aerial duels success rate for his last 3 seasons. Can't find stats on squawka beyond that but I think it's enough to show that perception and reality are quite different. Anyway, if ETH wants Timber then I would believe ETH knows what he expects of Timber much more than us.

Jones is definitely taller than Timber. You just have to look at pictures of Jones and Blind stood next to each other in lineups before kick off. Jones was clearly taller. Now do the same with pictures of Blind and Timber.
Still have concerns of him handling the likes of Van Dijk & Dias at set pieces, however also strong physical forwards too

Norwich was by far the best team of Championship last season. Ajax was/is the champions of Eredivisie. From the results of that season, Ajax gets to play in CL this season and was grouped with Dortmund, Sporting and Besiktas. They qualified from the group with 6 wins and no a single point dropped. So according to you all Norwich, the champions of the better league, can do better in that group? Maybe even advance 1 step further than Ajax and can get into the quarter finals of CL?

Jones has better ability in the air and is taller. Timber will have real issues in the premier league If he’s bought to play in a central defensive duo. If we’re going to play a 2 and want a young defender then Gvardiol would be a better option and fee wouldn’t be massively different.
