Seems most likely for me if we did sign him. Like the 'man of the match' video above where he started at right back. Also obviously covers centre back but is unlikely to play over Maguire or Varane.

If we were to sign a centre back as an intented starter (low priority in my opinion) I think it would be a left footer.
My issue here is if he’s not going to play over Maguire and Varane, buy someone who will. If we actually want a right back, then buy a right back and if it’s cover for centre back we want, then buy a player whose price matched that profile (N’Dicka??).

I do have concerns about his height and to a lesser extent think it’s strange that we wouldn’t attempt to identify a left footed cb but even despite this I’d be excited for his upside potential at cb. However, I’d pull my hair out if we played him at right back where he loses his entire unique selling point which is as a pressing, high line enabling, passing centre back. It’d be back to the days of Valencia/Young at full back (although others might look fondly on those days now).

What is all this nonsense about him being a good RB option for us? I know we desperately need a replacement for that one trick tackle monkey, but replacing him with another dude who can’t cross to save his life? Nope, Timber is a lot of things, but not a good RB. His qualities are his composure and his reading of the game, and both are accentuated when he plays CENTRALLY.

interesting choice of words to describe Wan-Bisska

You may not have meant it this way but you need to think about how you word things as that comes across as racist

F'cken hell.

I still think outside of the 7 or 8 leaving we definitely need to see what ETH can get out of the players who we might not see a future for. Maybe he can transform AWB? Or Rashford? God forbid even Maguire might improve. This Timber signing is definitely a sign of things changing though - 2 or 3 years ago he wouldnt have been high profile enough for us and we would probably spend all summer chasing Pau Torres or Jules Kounde again for mega millions. A good change in direction from the club!

I think AWB wants to leave ,tbh.
Rashford, his future is uncertain. Whether he sees himself here long term or whether the club do , we can only speculate.

If Hag is as good as people say he is, then there's a few players, depending on their work-ethic and general attitude, that should improve their games.

Well ETH will be there today so that alone SHOULD improve their attitudes somewhat to the game. I really hope it does too because the thought of the Conference League is a nightmare.

Although I 100% completely agree on Timber being a centre back and NOT a right back outside of a worst case scenario and also agree on AWB being great at tackling and practically nothing else you might want to edit your post as that’s really not a cool way of describing AWB, don’t think for a second it was intentional but still.

The saying is "one-trick pony."

Let me clarify: Me describing AWB as a ‘monkey’ has NOTHING to do with with the fecking colour of his skin. Jesus christ, are we past this already?

No, the way he moves his flexible body about the pitch always reminds me about a monkey moving through the jungle. It’s actually a compliment, because it’s quite gracefully. The only unfortunate thing is that the comparison is also correct in that both the monkey and AWB can’t handle a football for shit.

I get it but people just told you to be careful of using the word since in the modern day community it could be considered as racist. Could have just use spider since his nickname is spider.

A permanent Back 3, rather than his customary transitional ones? Probably not given the evidence at hand, but never say never; Cruyff played with a lot of 3—4—3 diamond base setups in his time as a coach, and ten Hag could be inspired by them.

As regards Timber, there's a historically significant convention of defenders transitioning into more center-of-the-pitch roles (and vice versa): Neeskens (fullback to midfielder), Rijkaard (stopper to midfielder), Breitner (fullback to midfielder), Júnior (fullback to midfielder), Desailly (stopper to midfielder at Milan), Fabinho (fullback to midfielder), at times even de Jong featured as a central defender with de Ligt. This lad could potentially trend along similar lines too, given his technical level, maneuverability/dynamism in tight-ish spaces, obvious footballing intelligence and the fact that he does not mind putting in the legwork. While relatively short central defenders can be successful to varying degrees (from meh like Ben White and Nathan Aké to imperious like Fabio Cannavaro and Roberto Ayala), he has some attestable fragilities in the air (which could be magnified and exploited in the Premier League, vis-à-vis the Eredivisie or Europe):

nHsiJOI.png

That being said, what he brings to the table as a ferocious Swiss army knife type of central defender (especially in a possession-focused team than employs an aggressively high defensive line) is undoubtedly more special and peculiar and valuable than what he would bring to the table as a midfielder — and if successful in the former role, he could emerge as a reference point and minor trend-setter in the Premier League and open the door for more vertically challenged central defenders (as there's a lot of monkey see, monkey do escalation and general destigmatization in the quest for success/relevance). For that possibility alone, we should probably persist with him as a central defender through the early goings (if we sign him, of course). :)
Worth noting that these stats from FBref are exclusively from his CL football, so can go some way to explain his insanely low aerial %.

He wouldn’t be used as a traditional rb. He’d transition to dm or box to box depending on what the game needs.

I don’t know mate, I’ve never heard anyone say “tackle monkey” to describe a player. A donkey, perhaps. But monkey?

Who the feck knows what you can and can’t say anymore in the ‘modern day community’. Someone is offended somewhere.

When eating a slice of cheese there is probably an offended veganist somewhere that you took the cow’s milk.

The static nature of a donkey I would describe as quite the opposite to our elastic AWB.

I understand your frustration but unfortunately, this is how it works these days so you need to accept it. When we are telling you, it means good for you not just in here but also for other location or places or social media so you should listen to the advices. Even Cavani got banned. These days, people need to be careful with their words.

Those bloody snowflakes upset about calling a black person a monkey. Grow up Jesus.

A black man reminds you of a monkey moving through the jungle? Wow

Using the word monkey in any shape or form with a black person is very dangerous territory. It's just best not to use it at all.

I'm sure you didn't mean it as a racial insult, but better to find a different way to describe it in the future.

As Penna said, the phrase is a one trick pony, but I guess monkeys do perform tricks and I’d assumed you just mixed it with the phrase “performing monkey”.

To actually say he actually reminds you of a monkey in the way he moves is so tone deaf and basically indefensible in 2022. I would maybe understand if he was climbing not playing football.

It does. Huge step up to do the same in the PL but if we bought a hard working right winger with quality (someone like Raphinha would be ideal) it could work.
That's actually my dream signing. If we can get Timber, 2 CMs and Raphinha, I'd actually be very happy with the window despite the amount of players leaving.

I feel Raphina isn't rated enough on here, he's a player that can single-handedly transform our team. I do feel he'll probably end up at Barca and we're going to regret the fact that we never got him when we had the chance and he's a top 5 Balon do'r candidate.

I'd say most people know that you can't use that word in the context that you did. If you happen to be an exception then fair enough, but at least listen to what everyone on here is telling you.

Can't see them signing him and Lewandowski unless more than FDJ is leaving

The fact Shrager is being slightly positive is a very good sign IMO. Obviously not done dealio but it seems if we want him (which seems true) then we've got him.

I just hope we don’t ruin him like we seem to everyone else. Ajax fans rate him massively.

:nervous: :rolleyes: Have you not heard of monkey chants and bananas being thrown? A better description of AWB would be that of an octopus.

Haven’t monkeys been through enough? First monkey pox and now they’re considered to be as shite at football as AWB is
