Julien Escude

Rennes are likely posturing for more money because its Man United who are interested. Either way, it should either happen or fall through within the next week.

I think it'll happen, and very soon. Not so sure about the 4th striker though. Seems the Crespo deal has fallen through, since they're selling Nesta to Milan.

Personally I'm happy enough to have Rio on board, but many think we needed 2 new defenders.

Surely this (signing Escude) will silence the doubters, and put the odd touch of fear in those wud-be clubs who seem to think that we cant have our trophy back

Not anymore. Rennes have stalled, and want two weeks to think about the deal, according to Skysports.

"Manchester have confirmed their interest in the player."

"But we are not interested in such a transfer as it is too late in the season and to find a suitable replacement would be difficult."

"We haven't decided on anything,"

"We will reflect on the situation in the interests of everyone."

Rennes plan to meet again with United representatives in a fortnight, and face a struggle to persuade Escude against a move to Old Trafford.

Perhaps we'll do one of those deals where the player comes in a years time, like what Liverpool are doing with those Le Havre boys ?

Those two are in their teens and Liverpool don't exactly need them now. Escude is 22 and we do need him around now.

hmmmmmm. The jury's still out for me

He still makes too many mistakes. He's in danger of suffering a touch of the Phil Neville's

Mebbe that's how SAF see it too. His interest certainly spells a big warning to PN and MS

He's a bit raw but as someone has repeatedly said on this forum, he has improved constantly since he arrived and will continue to do so. People forget how young he is. He will soon be the best LB in the Prem, if he isn't already. The mistakes will become fewer and fewer soon enough.

When you go to a match you can really appreciate just how good Silvestre is. If our RB was like that we'd have a great system.

The guy is strong as an ox, fast, skillful, plays 110% every game and gives us width in the 30 games Giggs fails to turn it on. LBs who get up and down the touchline, make crosses, beat fullbacks and over lap at every opportuity are very rare.

He rarely gets beaten if you think about it. The only problem is concentration/defensive awareness at times. Plus when on the ball he sometimes gives it away, but even the best do that.

I think if we get Escude, it will be as the long term LB and MS is out the door. Mexes may just be our long term Rio partner. I'm still hoping and praying for Mexes, but with Brown, O'Shea, Rio and MS plus Escude, it looks like no room for another young CB.

Here's another name to throw in to the Escude debate - Wayne Bridge ? Fits the criteria set perfectly: English, young, knows some of the lads from international duty, and Prem experience.

30 games Giggs fails to turn it on. Too true mate, right on 30 games Giggs fails to turn it on.

Perhaps Shao is including the games Giggsy doesn't actually play, in which case it offers a more accurate assesment.

I can't see any other scenrio other than that we're buying Escude to replace Denis. We lost our back up LB and are simply buying a young replacement. Can't see Silvestre going anywhere.

Dont get me started on Giggs, its bloody obvious his performances have dropped and he only turns it on occasionally. The rest of the time he does feck all. Like versus Boca, he did v.little.

Richardson attacked the FB more than Giggsy did. Giggs should be attacking the RB everytime he gets the ball, he will cause so much damage that way. Anyways its useless, and yes I was including the games where he's absent and all games, not just league games.

The point is without Silvestre our left hand side would be very weak and the team would have virtually no penetration or pace if Giggs disappears or doesnt feel like it.

I cant see us having 3 young LBs challenging for one slot. Rotating them would not work, one as backup would not work. We'll see.

I'd prefer someone (younger or older) as backup cos I wud like some solidarity and consistancy in the back from now on.

why 3 ?

It wouldn't be three challenging for one spot, more like two and a half. ;) I can see Phil being used more and more as a utility man who can play at either full-back position or fill out in midfield if needed.

Rennes Manager:

"Manchester have informed us of their interest in the player. We're not too keen to let him go because it's at quite a late stage for us to think about a replacement,"

"But we haven't decided yet. We are going to have a think about what will be the best solution for both parties and will meet again on August 25 to settle the deal one way or another."

"I hope something good will come out of this meeting. I've done my time at Rennes and I can't let such a good opportunity pass me by," said Escude.

Of course Phil. Phil is a utility man but LB is the spot he hopes to challenge for. He is never gonna be anything but backup at RB or midfield.

Even with 2, its hard to have 2 very good players of similar age challenging for one spot - one or both of them will become unhappy.

Whilst I can see the benefits of Silvestre making up for something Giggs often fails to deliver (I happen to agree with SC on that point), I don't see it as a reason to rate Silvestre as highly as some do. He's a defender and that's what he should excel at first and foremost. After that his forwards runs are a bonus. We shouldn't be happy to have Silvestre in the team because he offers something going forward that Giggs does less and less. You are then effectively encouraging Giggs to be less pentrative and to take on players less and less if Silvestre is doing this for him.

He can't realistically challenge for Left back... as he's better at right back anyway. His strong foot is not his left and funnily enough, 3 penalties he caused (the famous v Arsenal and Romania and another v Graz) was when he was played at left back and tried to reach for a tackle with his left foot. Failed miserably I might add.

I think Phil can challenge Gary on the right, but we must have another naturally left-footed guy on the left.

Manchester United officials were said to be locked in negotiations with Rennes over a deal to bring the 5m pounds-rated Frenchman to Old Trafford, although
any deal now seems unlikely
