Julien Escude

Ashton - why not promote from within?
Zamora - ditto
DiCanio - possibility
Christie - too expensive (bearing in mind we're only spending what we received for Yorke ;) )
Flo - Hmmmmm, at least 5m I'd say, despite his piss poor record in Scotland.

DiCanio would be good though and I could see us getting him for around 2m

I'm not against promoting from within. Webber, Davis, and Nardiello should get a crack imo.

So no need for anymore buying then?

I agree. Three talented lads, one of them is bound to shine :)

No, we still need to buy. What if Ruud and Ole get inured. We're fecked.

Not if we've got Forlan and for example, Davis, and are playing 4-5-1 we're not.

Anyway, I was baiting you ;)

I could see us adding DiCanio at 2m. Seems more likely than anything else if you ask me - fits with Kenyon's statement.

I saw the trap a mile away. :p

anyways...I think we have to get one player in there whether its a reserve or a transfer.

And what a mistake...we would have 7.5+2.6 mil for a good striker. :o

Forlan wasn't a bad signing. You will see. He just neded time to settle in.

I do think that You do not rate Forlan either!?

Anyone who has seen Escude... is he better than Silvestre and would he break in to the first-team straight away ? Personally I don't think we need a new LB but if Silvestre isn't entirely happy there and Escude is a decent lad I'd have no objections. On the subject of a fourth striker, why not give a chance to a young striker, like Davis ? After all, I can't see us spending more than a few million in the transfer market.

I definitely rate him. He's only going to get better.

Yes I have seen Julien quite often. He is very steady and a better "defender" than Silvestre in the true sense of the term. However until now he just does his job and attacks a little less than Mikey. IMO going forward is great but only when you defend well too..

I thinkl we should go for Escude immediately and buy some cover for Disco.

Attacking is a vital part of a full-backs game today imo, and Silvestre set-up many an important goal last-term, which I don't think we could live without to be honest.

Escude is needed as Silvestre's cover thats all. We would be dead if he got injured at the same time as Gazza. We need a similar player to him as back up imo and Escude fits the bill

Escude is roughly the same age as Silvestre and wouldn't stand being back-up if so many teams are interested in him. We either get Escude and sell Silvestre or leave the LB situation for a year or so imo.

I love Silvestre's pace. He create goals. Doesn't sound like Escude is as good going forward.

Is Silvestre a bosman player next year? In which case I guess he's been offered but doesn't want to sign a new contract. Which might explain why we're in the marked for a new left back.

When a fullback is as defensively poor as Silvestre, who ever is brought in as cover would not really be backup. Because against opposition which require to be defended well against the cover player if better defensively than Silvestre shall take over. And at least half the teams we play agaisnt fit that description. So Escude would not really be a second choice player. Thus says the chief

I've said for ages that Escude was likely, and that Silvestre is the likely person to get sold, that latter is still to happen, but if we get Escude, then I wouldn't bet against it. Admittedly Phil's recent comments do have to be added to the mix, maybe this will change the situation and he might leave, but I doubt he will leave of his own accord.

I believe that Escude would be a good purchase but as for another striker we should try the young ones within. If it does not work out purchase a cheap but reliable striker. :)

in my opinion he's already done quite well...he's just been rather unlucky...i think the little experience in the WC was good for him and some of these preseason games will help his confidence as well...i think he's a great player.

Forlan will be a force!!!!
Just in the world cup and preseason he ahs shown us what he can do..

Forlan was scary good in his first couple of games. He linked up play superbly, especially considering he was playing with strangers.

Not scoring then became a dead weight and affected his confidence. If he can score a couple early on I think he could be very good.

Ole obviously deserves to be abover him in the pecking order so SAF will have to keep them all sweet - one of those nice problems <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" />

Phil is getting very edgy, do you think he might actually leave?

From ThisIsLondon:
Phil Neville has demanded talks with Sir Alex Ferguson after hearing that Manchester United want to sign a new left back.

The long- serving defender is upset over reports that United have discussed a move with Rennes player Julien Escude that would push him out of the picture at Old Trafford - which would be all the harder to take following the disappointment of missing out on a World Cup place with England.

Escude says he has spoken to Ferguson, with the aim of challenging Mikael Silvestre for the left back position. Neville had counted on having a chance in that slot after the departure of Denis Irwin, but he may now see that opportunity disappear. Escude is rated at around £4million.

Juan Sebastian Veron has paid tribute to new signing Rio Ferdinand after seeing his 17-minute debut at Bournemouth on Saturday.

Veron said: 'Rio has class and ability beyond his years. Football seems to be a stroll for him.' Ferdinand said: 'It was a touching reception from both sets of fans. All the players at United are friendly.'

Ferdinand and United's other England World Cup players were given time off yesterday as the remainder of the United party flew out to Oslo for tonight's friendly against Valerenga.

This may sound just like my typical pessimistic nature regarding the media, but doesn't this just looks like someone putting two (Phil saying he'd like to play more) and two (our 'interest' in Escude) and getting five.

I mean, even Escude said Fergie wants him for 2003/04, and at the moment we don't know what's going on with Silvestre.

<a href="http://www.manutd.com/news/fullstory.sps?iNewsid=19878&itype=" target="_blank">ManUtd.com on Escude</a>

The article hints that we may sign him this month, and that it would be to join silvestre rather than replace him, therefore as a straight replacement for Irwin.

As I said before, from what I've seen (one match); he's solid and holds the ball and distributes it well. I don't think he will be keeping Micky out of the team however, although he certainly has the potential to.

It wasn't. Fergie saw the potential, at reasonable price. Fair enough, he didn't exactly excite the world with his perfomances, but Diego has bags of potential, and in a few seasons, 7.5m will seem a bargain. My thoughts anyway.

How do you pronounce Escude?
Escuday?
Escud?
Could anyone tell me? <img src="graemlins/nervous.gif" border="0" alt="[Nervous]" />

Which makes perfect sense. Replacing Irwin has always been the priority. Replacing Silvestre was just a pie in the sky pipe dream by a few on this site. ;)

<a href="http://www.planetfootball.com/article.asp?id=102052&clid=&cpid=&Title=United+step%2Dup+Escude+chase" target="_blank">Talks to start this weekend</a>

Allegedly. ;)

What about Tierney? He's good going forward and solid at the back, has a great engine but just needs experience. Plus he wont cost us a penny and his wages will be lower until he proves himself. He will be breaking into the full Irish teamin the not too distant future. Back line for the next 10 years

Wes Rio JOS Tierney

Pace and skill :D

not yet good enough for the 1st team

good prospect though

Its all part of the Communications game. (give Paddy H credit) Kenyon has to release 'spin' on our finances to prevent clubs adding too much of a premium to the transfer fee, just because its Man Utd.
