Julien Escude

another Irish opinion, if hes' the same Tierney that was in the Toulon tourney, then he looks lively, but I thought he gave the ball away too much.
Sounds like the Escude move is back on track because the other Rennes full back Reverillie(excellent young defender) may not leave for Valencia after all. Rennes were almost relegated last season, inevitable that their better players should desire a move.

Been saying this from the beginning. It was a necessary move after the Rio deal.

ESCUDAY, although it's not really that.

The English can't pronounce the u and the é anyway. You can say Escuday, you have to prononce the last letter as there is an accent on it.

There is no way Silvestre is leaving this year. He is our 1st choice LB and has been for awhile now, and he is arguably the best in the country. Fergie has played him in every pre-season game, he is definitely part of Fergie's plans.

As is Seba Veron - and righly so.

Also the reserve strikers are obviously NOT part of his plans, and rightly so. Forlan is head and shoulders above the reserve strikers yet look how badly he struggles. Webber et al, can do oe thing, and thats make up the numbers. They wud not do the job and that is why Fergie wud rather play Giggsy.Scholes there or buy someone in.

Our most promising striker was by far and away David Healy who didnt even come close to breaking through.

All those who keep going on about "giving the youngsters a chance" should think about what they say.

The only reserves with a chance of becoming first teamers are in midfield, some defenders have very slight chances of becoming squad players like P.Neville.

Silvestre is definitely not the best left back in the premiership. Ashley Cole, Riise, Michael Bridges, are better imo and Le Saux is on par except he's a cnut.

I don't think there is a 'best left back in the league'. There's a bunch of very good left backs and Silvestre is one of them.

Simply put, better options are few, if seriously exist at all. This Escude chap could be promising but I don't see Sir Alex getting rid of Silvestre, signing Escude and making him a regular first choice automatically.

silvestre the best? I don't think so....
riise and bridge are better imo

Escude sounds like a tactful move, he may be on a rung below Silvestre seniority wise, but he will push Mikey to perform and may eventually prove good enough to oust him.

The Coly move looks more tricky, he stood out in the WC, and wants to move for reasons of ambition presumeably, so he would want a starting place. He would be a stronger defender than Gaz- in every game I saw him in he outpaced and overpowered every player he met. But I'm not sure that Fergie is ready to drop Gaz, though his injury may be the perfect oppurtunity. And I'm suprised the Arse haven't snapped him up.

I don't think Silvestre is the best either. IMO, Bridge is best LB in EPL. Riise is not as good defensively.

Silvestre definitely is not the best, however I think Riise now play in a much-a-like-midfielder role than defender. <img src="graemlins/yawn.gif" border="0" alt="[Yawn]" />

Man Utd close on Escude

Manchester United officials will travel to France this weekend as they close in on the signing of Rennes defender Julien Escude.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to add another defender to his squad before the start of the Premiership season.

Rennes communication manager Jerome Poupard said: "We have not received any offer from Manchester United concerning Julien Escude, but they asked us to meet on Sunday.

"As we are polite people, we have accepted."

Escude, 22, joined Rennes from Cannes in 1999 and has been a regular in their first team since.

He can play at left-back or centre-half and has represented France at Under-21 level.

Last month he hinted that he would be prepared to move to the Premiership with United.

"Manchester United are interested," he said. "I have had contact with Alex Ferguson. I wanted to know what he expected from me and what he was intending to do.

"I am ambitious and I want to keep progressing, play in the Champions League and win titles."

United talks over Escude and Sorin
By Ian McGarry and Alan Nixon

Manchester United are in talks to sign two left-sided players and could seal deals for Frenchman Julien Escude and Argentina's Juan Pablo Sorin this week.

Officials from Old Trafford and Rennes will meet on Sunday to discuss Escude's transfer, while Sorin has been offered to United to wipe out an £8million debt.

Lazio still owe United half of the £16m fee they agreed to pay for Jaap Stam last year. Sorin can play as a left wing back or on the left of midfield and it is possible that he will be signed despite Sir Alex Ferguson's desire to recruit Escude.

At the moment, Rennes are demanding £5m for the 22-year-old while United are willing to pay £3m.

Rennes spokesman Jerome Poupard said today: 'We have not received any offer from Manchester United for Julien but they have asked to meet us on Sunday.'

It is understood that a compromise will be suggested by the French club at Friday's meeting which would see the talented left back remain at Rennes for another season and join United next summer.

In that case, a deal for Sorin would be convenient for United as they strive to fill the gaps in defence left by the departures of Denis Irwin, Ronny Johnsen and Ronnie Wallwork. Lazio are currently on a pre-season tour of England and are due to meet Blackburn on Friday.

As a plc United would be quizzed by their shareholders if they do not claw back the Stam cash and talks were going on in Manchester yesterday with one of the top transfer brokers. Agents working for Lazio have offered Sorin to Leeds United but cash restrictions at Elland Road may have put paid to any deal.

This Poupard seems a splendid fellow ;) ...let's call it 4 squillion and take Escude now.

I'm sure Elfie, Celine and Roy will answer this properly but he is one of the stars of the French U21 team, really shining at the U21 tournament recently and therefore regarded as one of the best young left backs in the world.

Saw him play in U-21 tournament in Switzerland. He is very calm, and has poise on the ball. Not sure if he can defend though.

Perfect for united then.

Surely the new Lizarazu, Greg Vignal, is the left back for France U21..

;)

he seems to me a bit like lizarazu, but his calmness on the ball also reminds me of rio/blanc.

he does not seem the all out aggression type like R.carlos and silvestre.

if silvestre can improve at the rate he is, and goes for the left back spot to make it his own, then we have a potential w/class left back, but if he doesn't shut his mouth, then it's pack yer bags, your'e off from fergie.

well his brother Nicolas is a good tennis player...err that's it :o ;)

He can play CB too I think. We're meeting them today, and Soccernet says he's our for £5m. Seems a bit much to me, but worth it long term.

However Soccerage are running this story...

08/10/2002. No deal between Le Championnat's Rennes and Manchester United about Julien Escudé's proposed move to Old Trafford. Officials from both teams met today to discuss terms, but Stade Rennais already warned they would not agree a cut deal for Escudé.

Fellow U21 starlet Anthony Reveillere is also frozen as neither Valencia nor Lyon put a sufficient bid on the table for the player.

On meeting today

Escude meeting was today at 12 in Paris.

Ferguson and Escude were both missing, just high ranked officials from both clubs. Nothing yet on the outcome of the meeting but Rennes publicy affirm that they don't want to sell.

The player said this morning : "I hope that the outcome of the meeting will be positive(...) I have done my time here, time to turn the page, can't miss an opportunity like that. I really want to leave. Ferguson has called me a few times, we have met, it's a honour."

I hope they do come to an agreement, if he said that they can hardly keep him, it'll be down to the money as usual, hope they don't screw us too badly on it. Any more than 5m is too much, less than 5m would be good imo. So it'll probably be 10m.
