Julian Draxler

I highly doubt that Dortmund had a bid for him, they must know that he's never going to play for them.

On the contrary, he actually said he'd fit in very well at Dortmund when asked about the move.

Draxler:

"In sporting terms, I would definitely have fit into the Dortmund team," And I don't find it all that damnable that Dortmund enquired about me. It's not like we did things any differently by signing Felipe Santana from Dortmund."

I didn't realise it, thanks. This can't have gone down well with Schalke fans, they absolutely hate each other.

He did say in the same interview that there was no chance he'd ever go play there, so the schalke fans are fine I think.

Going from Schalke to Dortmund is probably just as fierce as moving between Madrid and Barca. Never happen.

Felipe Santana has just left Dortmund to go to Schalke.

But yeah, Draxler said although he'd have been a good fit at Dortmund, he'd never play for them.

Luis Enrique, Figo, Ronaldo (granted he didn't transfer straight between the two).

Draxler is a Schalke homegrown. Much different than a Brazilian player switching sides.

I absolutely would love to see him here but I somehow have the feeling that Bayern will go for him next summer as a Ribery replacement.

They would probably like to wait one or two more seasons and buy him then but the fact is that teams like City and Chelsea offering really good money to the lad and so they will probably have to make their move next summer.

Still would be great if we managed to snatch him up.

He reminds me of Ribery with his footwork, trickery and pace. He'll probably go on to have a better career.

I don't especially want us to buy Draxler, but just for the sake of accuracy, they play completely different positions. So they wouldn't really be in competition.

What do you feel are our most pressing needs?

Central midfielders, obviously.

I wasn't trying to be condescending like your answer was. I actually wanted to know. Other than central midfield you feel the squad is perfect then?

Sorry, my 'obviously' wasn't meant to be condescending either! Just came out that way.

No, not perfect, but without an obvious need for reinforcement. We have lots of strikers, a few people who can play at #10, a good mix of experienced and promising wingers, an excellent set of CBs - again a good mix of ages - good first-choice fullbacks and some promising youngsters to cover them, a superb keeper and a good back-up for him.

Obviously I'd take someone like Ronaldo. But in terms of who we need, the requirement for anyone other than a CM is tiny compared to the need to get in a world-class partner for Carrick and someone decent to back him up in the more defensive role. In every other position I'd prefer us to trust what we've got.

I agree with that, what position do you see Powell playing in the first team? Draxler is a forward who can play left, right or through the middle by my reckoning.

Yes but he's much better wide. Most wide men around these days can play through the middle. It's become a very popular thing to consider. But Draxler is far more effective using his pace and dribbling to attack from wide.

I don't know about Powell. To be honest I haven't seen enough of him. Both Fergie and the Crewe management said he could play as an AM/support striker, but that his future was definitely in CM. So I'll go with that.

I never considered him to be a truely special talent until he was moved in the middle. He clearly made the next step in the second part of the last season after Holtby was sold and Schalke attacked mainly through him. He also doesn't get tired saying that he wants to play behind the striker in every single interview this pre-season.

I agree he looks a great prospect I don't really like using youtube videos to judge players. What would you say are his main strengths? He looks pacy, he makes good decisions and he is a good finisher.

I want to see more of Powell this season, he strikes me as Lampard-esque with his shooting technique and ability to get in good positions in and around the box.

German playmaker Julian Draxler has reiterated his dream to leave Schalke in order to play for one of Europe's elite, naming Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea as preferred destinations.

The 20-year-old is quickly establishing himself as the brightest talent in the Bundesliga having orchestrated the club's fourth place finish last season, going on to build on that burgeoning reputation with standout performances in the Champions League in recent weeks.
With his performances garnering the attention of clubs across Europe, Schalke tied Draxler down to a six year contract during the summer and gave him the coveted no. 10 shirt in a bid to deter clubs from luring the prodigious talent away from the Vetlins Arena.
The club have confidently said in the past days that Draxler will not be leaving the club during the January transfer window, but the Germany international maintains he will be open to a departure.
"I owe Schalke a lot, but my roots here are not so deep that I would not be able to leave," Draxler told German newspaper Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger.

"I'm telling you honesty that my dream is to play for one of the big clubs at some point. If you want to achieve the big goals, which every world class player has, you have to play at the biggest clubs. These are Real, Barca, United, Arsenal and Chelsea."

Draxler has a release clause of €45m inserted in his contract which has for the time being deterred his admirers from launching a bid. Schalke general manager Horst Heldt is quietly confident that will remain the case until at least the end of the season.
"Julian Draxler will be at our club this season, that is for sure," Heldt said. "There will be no fuss regarding him during the January window, as he is committed to our club."
Draxler has introduced himself to the European stage in stunning style in this season's Champions League, netting in Schalke's 3-0 win over Steaua Bucharest before scoring a stunning winner from 25 yards out two weeks later against FC Basel.

Why have we still got 2 Draxler threads? They're both being updated at different times.

The only drawback for me with Draxler is that he plays in the same positions as Januzaj. It'd be great seeing them both interchanging between the left wing and AM for us though

He looks like a strong athlete, he'd fit well into the PL, is he getting much of chance in the German national team?

Well Löw invited him rather early - but it's not easy for him.. given that Götze, Özil, Reus (Kroos) and Müller all play AM and are probably still better than him. Schürrle seems to be Löw's favourite impact sub and Podolski still profits from his past performances in the national team, so he doesn't get much playing time atm and might infact not become a regular starter for the foreseeable future - despite being a great player.
However he just turned twenty a couple of weeks ago, so everything can happen.
