This was my first reaction until I remembered I thought the exact same when he joined us, and again when he joined Spurs, although if that's correct about Roma fan expectations you could be right.
That said, he replaced managers at United (possession, strict coaching) and Spurs (attacking, careful man managemnet) who were the exact opposite of him and both were disasters.
I don't really know anything about the Roma manager or how they play (save for how shite they were against us) but what Jose probably needs at this point is a team of aging journeymen and a club with low expectations of achievement and football style. A team who are grateful to have someone with his CV even when he treats them like shit and plays awful football, because that is what will happen.
I actually think this job might be even worse for him than the ones he's had in recent years. Because it's going to require exactly the qualities he most conspicuously lack: Working with youth, nurturing talent, pragmatically adapting style of play to the character of the squad, building confidence and commitment from the players. With no big transfer funding, he can't afford a man management style that routinely leaves good players by the wayside.
It is a good job to relaunch his career mainly because the team needs more than 1 season to have a balanced squad. But Roma fans will not be patient with bus parking tactics, because they know they are a club with little history to fight for the title, they expect to be entretained at least.
Look at Rudi Garcia, who actually did a good job at Roma, but his football was very cautious and fans were all over him.

All he has to do is get champions league football and he will be seen as a success which is easily more possible than the more competitive premier league

I think Mourinho has been on a cash-grab tour with his last 4 jobs (since his return to Chelsea). He would take any club if they pay him enough.
Amazon should just sign him up to follow him around on his managerial journeys. That would be a good drama. Roma probably factored that in. Would help their finances & boost their global profile.
