Jose Fonte

I think he's a solid defender, wouldn't be against this at all especially for the price being mentioned.

Maybe the Manager has identified an issue, looked at what is available.

For the fee involved and his probable wage demands, would be a good deal for the club. He's ready to play a role now, doesn't need to acclimatise to the premier league, nor the language. No idea why the club should be looking long term with every deal, Ibra is older and here to do a job for 1 or 2 seasons. Getting the right players for this season & getting the club back to genuine title contenders, should matter more to fans, than the age of our signings. We have plenty of promising young players who aren't ready just yet.

Fair point. I'm not really against this potential signing, just not very enthused by it.

By the sounds of it, we'd prefer a signing like Varane or Bonucci, but the money isn't there unless we sell a couple of high earners. Fonte would be a decent stop gap though at the price quoted.

I like Fonte but I bet he expects to start matches. I'm happy with Smalling/Blind/Bailly - I'd rather someone who's more of a squad player for now. Plus we have Axel and TFM able to play there.

£8m is a bit of a steal to be fair.

Fonte would be a total squad player I think. An experienced player to come in when there is injuries, Europa League matches.

He'd be a good addition I think, liked what I've seen in recent years. Am really beginning to think Southampton will struggle this year given another summer losing their best players.

I don't know he will get three times more money and will have a chance to win league/champions league or some cup, I think he would take a squad palyer position in Manchester united without thinking

Agreed they have been ravaged this year losing Mane, Pele, Wanyama and possibly Fonts and not to mention losing yet another manager.

Hopefully means a disorganised unit next game for us though.

An "ok" squad player, not a fan, why don't we get Pepe, who is a yr older but comfortably better at the top level? With his age, contract situation and presence of Varane, I think Real Madrid might be willing to listen to a serious offer.

Seems a solid and consistent centre back which better than about half our current ones.

Pepe and Mourinho have bad blood. Almost certain the two aren't on good terms.

Not sure why anyone would rather see either of them at CB over Fonte at this point. If Mensah is really Jose's next RB then he shouldn't be playing there and I don't think Tuanzebe is ready to be getting games.

I might be remembering this wrong but when Mourinho was at Chelsea didnt he make a massive point about how he didnt want to sign players once the league campaign had started, how he wanted business done before the opening day and then as far as he was concerned the window was closed and he'd make do with what he had?

Agreed about giving the younger guys a chance when appropriate, but i'd sooner have bailly, smalling, blind and fonte as first choices and get rid of jones and rojo. One is too injury prone and both of them are fairly crap at defending.

4 first choices. 2 youth products. Sounds about right.

That is fair. Fonte is miles ahead of either one of those two right now, so it makes sense. As long as TFM is played this season - I think he's ready for regular first team football.

Could the United scouts be at St Mary's to, I don't know... Scout Southampton before our match on Friday night? Would it be totally out of the question for Jose to want our next opponent watched.
I'm not saying he wont come but if all of this is based of our scouts being at St Mary's then come on of course they're there. It would be totally unprofessional for us not to have scouts there.

Hope we seal this move. Good stop gap. Premier League proven. He would slot right in at Utd. I hope we sign him and sell Rojo/Jones.

Smalling, Bailly, Blind & Fonte. Very strong CB line.

Bizzare if true, what happened to Jones I assumed he would be making squads regularly this season.

Rojo I could care less about but he's useful in that he can play CB and LB but so can Blind if need be so maybe he's not needed.
Jones is just too injury prone - the thing with squad players is that you just need them to be available when you need them - and we can't guarantee that with Jones sadly.

Jones keeps getting injured and can't be relied on. Same with Bastian.

Definitely, especially at this stage of his career.

Jones should be sold, if he was never injured he would be an amazing player.

All he's good for is making silly faces.

Rojo will go first. Fonte will be a good fit for 2 years to let smalling and bailly grow and also hopefully for tuanzebe to Mature as well.

I think Rojo can do a job personally, Jones sat on a gold mine of potential like Anderson but injuries, maybe lifestyle choices and a bit of bad luck went against them.

Rojo is the worst senior defender at the club. I dont think how he can do a job. Both are not currently good enough for united. Its just that jones could become a united player, Rojo is at his peak and wont get any better.

Is this going to be our main rumour for the rest of the month?

After that long Pogba saga, kinda feels like the transfer window energy has relaxed on here (a good thing) glad the saga's are done for a year

6 months my friend! Ed wont be able keep his cock in for too long.

The only job Rojo can do is serving burgers at McDonalds....simply not good enough!

We laugh, but he was out for months with shingles just last season.
He had shingles? Yikes, I thought that was something you only get in old age.

Maybe that's why Jones is always injured, he's actually an 85 year-old geezer in a young man's body.

One of the best defenders in the league for the past three seasons.

He's a brilliant organiser.
