Jose Fonte

Would be an upgrade on Rojo and Jones so I'd be all for it for the right price. Getting Fonte in for little more than we sold McNair would be great business. Bailly is off for the AFCON, and I'm worried he might be picking up a few suspensions along the way too.

Ivory coast haven't currently qualified.

I'm sure Koeman rates him but it's a bit odd that he's looking to buy two 32 year old CB's. I hope our interest is legitimate.

Could be wrong but I think Koeman may have put the bid in for Williams after his move for Fonte was rejected, so think it may be a case of one or the other. Given they've signed Williams, I'd be surprised if they're still pursuing Fonte as they have Jagielka in the equation too.

They're also after Kone from Sunderland. I imagine if we're serious about Fonte, we'll sign him.

Fonte, Blind, Bailly and Smalling.

Sell Rojo and Jones.

If we do sign him we might as well get rid of Jones and Rojo, unless Jose wants Rojo for left-back cover.

Selling Rojo and Jones would be the perfect summer for us.
Smalling, Bailly, Blind, Fonte/'experienced CB', Fosu-Mensah. With Bailly set to go to the AFCON for a month, I reckon that could be okay. I don't think we'll sell both though.

Wouldn't mind Fonte, a good reliable addition to the squad which we need considering how we ended up playing McNair and Blackett because of all the injuries last season.

Fonte, Blind, Bailly and Smalling.

Sell Rojo and Jones.
Simples. I don't understand the objections to this given how low the Caftards' opinions are of Rojo and Jones, and that Blind quite possibly will have to fill in at other positions due to injuries.

We won't sign Fonte. You heard it here first.

In a more serious note I don't think both Jones is going to play much this season anyway. Not even on the bench in the first 2 games. We have a lot of attackers so will usually only have 1 defender on the bench and Rojo edges it with his versatility.

Rojo is only there because Smalling is not. If Smalling displaces Blind or even Bailly, I doubt Rojo will make the bench. Jones is probably last in the pecking order of all defenders including TFM.

Edit: if we do sign him it won't be until after Friday.

Just another Rojo, surely? Decent but not that good so he'll end up looking out of his depth and his reputation will take an unfairly harsh hit.

Nah, he's way more sensible and disciplined than Rojo.

Doesn't make any sense to me, now that Bailly already proved he's the real thing. No way Bailly is going to be benched, so… Fonte won't probably even make it to the bench on Premier League games. Notice how Smalling or Blind, both better than him, will be on the bench against his team next week.

P.S.: concerning the issue of Bailly playing the African Cup mid-season, why not bring an extra experienced center-back in January?

so imagine this scenario. one of Blind or Smalling gets injured long term before mid-season. Then Bailly goes to AFCON. Who do you have?

Neither Blind nor Smalling can bail out Jones/Rojo/TFM.

I think he will be signed, Southampton come here on friday, i expect a deal to be Done then. Somehow very confident about this signing.

In that case we need GK, LW, Striker too.

Imagine if De Gea, Romero, Martial, Depay, Ibra gets injured.

Why would we sign someone who's only got maybe 2 seasons left? Bit too short term for my liking.

Maybe the Manager has identified an issue, looked at what is available.

For the fee involved and his probable wage demands, would be a good deal for the club. He's ready to play a role now, doesn't need to acclimatise to the premier league, nor the language. No idea why the club should be looking long term with every deal, Ibra is older and here to do a job for 1 or 2 seasons. Getting the right players for this season & getting the club back to genuine title contenders, should matter more to fans, than the age of our signings. We have plenty of promising young players who aren't ready just yet.

Maybe because by that time Bailly would be an estabilished CB and CBJ and TFM would be old/experienced enough to provide quality cover/competition to Smalling, Blind and Bailly?

This doesn't make any sense at all because surely you are aware that the chances of De Gea and Romero getting injured in quick succession are next to nil whilst we potentially have four strikers in Rooney, Martial, Rashford and Ibrahimovic and on the wings we have Martial, Mhkitaryan, Mata, Lingard, Memphis and Valencia all capable of playing there. Rojo and Jones' troubles (the former being totally shit; the latter being shit and always injured) have forced Jose's hand in this.

So you have mentioned inferior players in all the positions. Martial is our best LW and replacing him with Rashford, Lingard means there is drop in quality. Ibra is by far our best CF, replacing him with Rooney is again drop in quality. If Martial replaces Ibra then left wing is not very good. Similarly Blind, Smalling and Bailly are our best CBs. If they are injured or unavailable then there will be drop in quality.

Smalling, Bailly, Blind, Jones and Rojo are more than enough for a CB position. Unless we sell 2 and buy Fonte it doesn't make sense to have so many CBs. Also Jose has a good record when it comes to injuries to his players.

would make sense for me, had a good few seasons in the premiership seems to play majority of games and is a upgrade on both Jones and Rojo. Not sure where Jones would go from here to be honest.
