Looks like this might be happening. Hopefully it is the end of Jones and Rojo. Surely for one of them, most likely Jones.
Jose seem to like Blind, who in turn has repaid the faith showed in him.
Its Jones that should be trembling at this. Rojo might be saved by versatility.
There was a moment in the CC where Rojo went all spastic at the ref for a decision. That point i thought; hey, maybe Mourinho will like him.. Jones in danger.
Jones is versatile. He can have all sorts of injuries.

I'd rather keep Jones than Rojo, but yeah. Fonte in and one of them out.
If we sign him then we absolutely need to get rid off one other defender otherwise we'll end up having too many average defenders.
That would definitely have been my first instinct too, but I wonder of Mourinho will have been impressed with Blind centrally and intend to use him more there. In which case, that perhaps might put Jones at more risk than Rojo?

Blind is solid against teams who play the ball on the ground, he reads the game so well and intercepts a hell of a lot and tackles good. And at least with Bailly there as well - he has the pace to get in behind if someone beats Blind for pace. It's as soon as the ball is lobbed in the air Blind struggles.
Fonte would be decent for rotation and experience. Jones cant get a run in the team as he walks into every object going, and Rojo is just not to the level needed.
Btw, i dont think there's much to this tbh. Just a 2+2=5 rumor as We might want a experienced defender and he's portuguese.

Agreed about giving the younger guys a chance when appropriate, but i'd sooner have bailly, smalling, blind and fonte as first choices and get rid of jones and rojo. One is too injury prone and both of them are fairly crap at defending.
4 first choices. 2 youth products. Sounds about right.

With Europa League commitments, Bailly being young and raw, Jones (and thankfully to a lesser extent Smalling) being prone to injury and Blind not quite good enough to nail down a starting spot I reckon Fonte could have plenty of game time.
Its a pay day, a chance at silverware and being able to say he played for United.
Fonte is much better than Rojo and Jones, and a very good defender in his own right.

It depends on the players point of view i guess too, if he can handle not playing all the time then all good... the money and 'united' factor obviously always plays a part though as you say.

Going for Miranda for example would be better, although I'm not sure what is the situation there - he's on 2 years loan deal with Inter having option to buy around the same fee as Fonte is cited.
this is what happens in a squad, when the first choice is injured there is an obvious drop in quality hence the term first choice. What you are suggesting is some Utopian dispensation where you replace Xavi with Scholes, it has never happened over the short to medium term because you can't keep both players happy when they are fit. And how much of a drop in quality is Rashford to Martial?
These two are unreliable from a quality (Rojo) and fitness (Jones) perspective so there is need for a more dependable player especially as I suspect that Mourinho will use two different elevens for the PL and Europa.
If we sell Jones and Rojo? Yes signing Fonte makes sense. If not then it's too many players for CB position.

Lookig at both players objectively, yes, we have to sell them otherwise the drop in quality you were on about becomes more pronounced if we ever have to play without Bailly and Smalling.
