Jonny Evans is a red...

If we're talking Maguire's and Bailey's average levels versus those three then ai might agree with you but I'd argue both Maguire's and Bailly's early spells in the side were considerably better than most of what we saw from Evans, Jones or Smalling.
If you look at all of their best spells then it is still no contest. Evans was class when he first came through and especially between 2011/12 and 12/13 where he started as much or more than Rio or Vidic. And let's not compare early promise of those to Jones. Jones was one of the best CB prospects in the world, up there with Varane at the time. Injuries killed him. Smalling was the key CB for the majority of any success we did get post Sir Alex.

He will be here to do exactly what we would have been asking Maguire to do if he wanted to stay, which is absolutely feck all unless everybody else is unavailable.

Amazing on how many fans seem onboard for this. He left the club after putting on some shocking performances because he had to be the main man in defence after Rio/Vidic declined and eventually left. Him looking nervy on the ball and getting ragdolled by any half decent physical striker was the norm. And, now at 35 people are okay with him playing 10-15 games a season? When will this club not fall for nostalgia again/nepotism?
Not on the Evans train and don't believe we will sign him for the season, but we need backups and we don't have the money. So unless we have someone from the academy ready to step up and seize the backup roles, we will need to search for cheap deals and compromises.

We no longer have loads of money to throw. Our owners are not selling and not investing. FFP is breathing down our necks.
All our "to sell" players fetch us peanuts, with buying clubs having money to throw at players from other clubs but not ours. All our new signings or potential transfers involve huge transfer amounts and very high salaries.

I highly doubt Ten Hag is bothered that he used to play for us.

Read the signs. The stories before were that Harry Maguire is happy at United and willing to fight for his place. Yet we all pretty much knew that the club wanted to sell him.

So ETH officially tells him he’s not going to be the captain. Wouldn’t it make more sense to sell him while he’s still the captain? So clearly behind the scenes Maguire is making a sale difficult.

Now United bring in a 35 year old. It’s more to tell Maguire look, you’ll only be getting into the team if we have 4 players unavailable.

Imagine the scenes with Maguire when Jonny Evans is named captain for preseason

Exactly. Whether you look at best spells or consistent performances those three have been significantly better, it's the ending that corrupted our minds. But Evans was a top level replacement for Vidic and Rio when they started to struggle with injuries, Jones and Smalling were excellent as CBs but also very competent in other roles for SAF.

Who would have guessed, Jonny Evans would be the last every player from the Busby + Fergie eras?

Thats rubbish.

The stories about Maguire wanting to stay and fight for his place came out before he was stripped of the captaincy.

It's for 2 games ffs.

Ah ok - that is odd. I thought his contract had expired, and he had just been released.
That is the case. His contract ran down & he was free to leave. Leicester apparently did offer him another contract but he didn't take it.

“You’re Jonny Evans.” “Yes.” “You play centre back.” “Yes.” “I play centre back too.” “So?” “Well, are you better than me?” “Well, I never met you, but... yes.”

(I know they were at Leicester at the same time, but)

I get the jokes but these three are the best performers at CB between the Rio-Vidic and Varane-Lisandro eras. The likes of of Rojo, Bailly, Maguire or Lindelof don't even match the former three's average level.
Smalling was quite clearly the best of all of them. Not sure I would put Evans and Jones ahead of Lindelof though. All three had plenty of good but plenty of bad as well.

Always liked Evans as a player. He had one very uncomfortable season in 2014-2015 and was then sold. Maybe was the wrong call considering the money we spent on centre backs in the coming years.

Happy that he is back albeit only short term, hope that he gets a good deal somewhere.

So… that record about 80+ years of players playing with someone under either Sir Matt or Sir Alex will get prolonged by another few months or a year?

The revisionism is insane, he was a calamity for a couple of seasons at least before he was sold. In Fergie’s last season it seemed like we conceded from an Evans mistake every time he was on the pitch.

A fitting opportunity to post this quote from Roy Keane's The Second half:
"Jonny was a centre-half. He had the qualities of a Manchester United player, and he was bringing them to Sunderland. For such a young man – he was nineteen – he was very mature, and a born leader. Jonny was unbelievable for us. He lived with his mam and dad in Sale, near my home, so I picked him up there and brought him up to see the set-up at Sunderland.

"I knew I was on a winner; I knew him, and I knew what he was about. I remembered an incident when I was still at United; there’d been a fight in the canteen and Jonny had looked after himself well – I think he knocked the other lad out. I knew Jonny was tough."

So... Who do we reckon eventually will get decked by Evans from the current squad?
Maguire hopefully if the Greek legal system doesn't bang him up first.

Sounds like it is more of a signing that could lead to a potential coaching role for Evans.

Calm down he won’t be here in a month

I mean fair but Maguire and Bailly were honest pretty bloody brilliant in their early spells as well. I think because they've fallen off so badly people forget that they were actually playing at a very high level at one stage.

Maguire was widely considered one of the best centre backs in the league during his second season at United; I'm not sure if any of Jones, Evans or Smalling were put in that bracket.

It would be like the scene from Training Day where Denzel expects to have his back covered by the whole neighborhood only to find out none of them gives a shit about him and actually want him gone. Maguire will however not have a cool "King Kong ain't got shit on me"-monologue but instead just strut out of Carrington wrapping his two arms around his massive head.
