Manchester United are interested in Rangers teenager John Fleck.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is aware of Fleck's progress with Scotland U16 and is trying to lure the 15 year-old south.

United have already plundered Scottish junior football in the last 12 months for former Hearts pair David Gray and Daniel Galbraith.

Anyone with info on him?

He captained the U15s last year, and he's now captaining the Scottish U16s. Scored a couple of goals in the Victory Shield so far. He's a forward.

SAF is trying to single-handedly save Scottish footy!

I know that the suicidial Rangers fans up here see this lad as the only bright spot in their otherwise tortured and pointless existence. Even Celtic fans who have seen him play are grudgingly admitting that he looks really handy, even if der huns' description of him as the next Rooney is wide of the mark.

He is the nephew of ex-Rangers and Norwich striker Robert Fleck, but lacks his predilection for pies. A FoF coaches him at Everton Boys Club up here and says he's the best young talent he's ever seen.

There's something weird about the set up of Rangers youth team, like they don't actually own their own players - they're actually owned by one of David Murray's holding companies or something (this might not be right ). So if you wanted him it might not be too difficult to get him. You would certainly cheer up a lot of already delirious Celtic fans if you poached him.

Some United fans might be annoyed that his name is similar to Fletch though.

"I used to play with the 16s at Rangers. Ally Park and John Fleck are really talented players. Fleck is basically Wayne Rooney."

If he turns out to be shit, the two names will be handily interchangeable though.

Manchester United Check Out Rangers Starlet

Manchester United have been running the rule over Scottish giants Rangers' promising youngster John Fleck, according to a report in British tabloid The Sun.

17-year-old Fleck, who is the nephew of former Rangers, Norwich and Chelsea forward Robert, is a tricky midfielder and has drawn comparisons with Wayne Rooney due to both his ability and physical appearance.

Despite his young age, he has already made a handful of appearances for Rangers including an appearance in the 2008 Scottish Cup Final. He drew particular applause for his performance against Aberdeen last Saturday and has featured in all of the Gers’ last four fixtures.

Reports suggest that Alex Ferguson sent his brother, Martin, to watch the youngster play 70 minutes of that Aberdeen fixture last weekend.

However, Manchester United may have a fight on their hand to land Fleck, as Chelsea are also thought to be interested in the teenager’s services.

Apparently the next biggest thing in Scottish football, anyone tracking his progress?

i saw his full debut against falkirk .. was the MOTM as well i think ..

Interesting... we do seem to be stocking up our youth team at the momment with fresh talent. It's a very good time to come to United considering a few of our senior players are nearing retirement. Scholes' and Giggs positions are up for grabs and a player like Fleck could easily break into the squad within a year or two.

He must be something special then.

Been informed by season ticket holder that the kid is gifted, hard to knock off the ball and likes to run at defenders. Needs to improve positional playa wee bit and tends to be a bit selfish infront of goal at times.

To be honest I wish a few more of our players were a bit selfish in front of goal

My cousin had a trial at Rangers, he said Fleck was really good. Rooney-like in his game

One of my mates is a season ticket holder at Castle Grayskull and he is very excited about Fleck. Reckons he'll be the only truely great scottish player of his (or to be honest the last few) generation.

I don't think he'll be leaving Rangers for a couple of years.

Information on his actual position would be he is a forward who can play in the hole or out on the left. WHich is where he has played but his future is up front in some capacity.

Certainly an exciting talent, he scored a rediculous goal in the Youth Cup final last year against Celtic i think. Maybe from the half way line or something, certainly one player if the only player to keep an eye on up here.

Do you mean an OT season ticket holder, or a Rangers one? Because whenever I've met a season ticket holder at OT, they've known pretty much feck all about football, and chat shit 100% of the time.

There are exceptions to this rule, as I have found out since posting here, but that's a distinct minority.

Pretty much spot on. Fleck does look very useful. His decision-making's still a bit cack, but he's developing and doesn't look out of place in the Rangers first 11. He's obviously got shedloads of potential but it's early days and there's plenty of wonderkids who haven't cut the mustard.

Too true Gio but you can't blame us for getting a wee bit excited at the prospect of a scottish footballer with the genuine ability and talent to get to the top of the game.

If he's as good as he's supposed to be he'll be an international at 18 or 19.

It's certainly refreshing to have someone with genuine technical ability coming through the ranks. Looking back at the last 15 years or so, only Fletcher and Ferguson have had the touch which doesn't look out of place at the top level.

Video evidence: John Fleck (Manchester United)
Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

A report in The Sun this morning claims that Sir Alex Ferguson sent his brother Martin, one of his most trusted scouts, to have a look at 17-year-old John Fleck, the Rangers attacker described by some in Scotland as the “Scottish Wayne Rooney.”

According to the tabloid newspaper, Martin Ferguson went to the Rangers match at Aberdeen on Saturday where Fleck played 70 minutes of the match. Fleck made his first appearance of the season a week before against Falkirk and was named man of the match in a 3-1 victory.

John Fleck, who is the nephew of Robert Fleck - the former Scottish international, became the youngest British player to play in a senior cup final when he came on as a substitute in the 2007/2008 Scottish Cup final win over Queen of the South.

Fleck, who stands 6.0ft tall, is a player of massive promise despite his tender years. His direct running, powerful style and extreme confidence has earmarked the forward as one of the most promising talents to emerge in Scotland for quite some time.

Rangers assistant coach Ally McCoist recently waxed lyrical over Fleck.

McCoist: “In terms of John’s footballing ability, I don’t think I’ve come across anyone as advanced mentally at his age. In that respect, you don’t have too many worries about him. But there are a million other things that could affect him and it’s our job to protect him off the park as it is when he is training and playing… Flecky has put one foot on the first rung of a massive ladder. He’s got absolutely miles to go but there’s no reason why he shouldn’t go on to have a fabulous career.”

Tell you what, those Rooney comparisons don't seem all that wide of the mark :nervous:

Looks a great prospect indeed.. I just wonder how many of these kind of players do we need? Don't get me wrong I really hope we sign him.. I have tried to follow him since a year now.. but we have so many players playing in the same position as him if indeed his best position is what it is claimed here..

Luckily I have heard and read that he can play in a number of positions and is still young.. Its possible that his so called best position may not even be his best.. If he signs we may be able to mold him into a better player on his strongest possible position.. which may or may not be in the hole..

Biggest prospect in Scotland...

The Rooney comparisons are valid. I know someone who is 18 and has played against him at a lower level and said 'He's like Rooney' - because of his strength.

Six-foot strikers? Could do with another one, to be honest. Especially if Manucho turns out to be the busted flush I fear he might be.
