Where do we equate the high level women's game to though? I like Nedum Onuoha as a pundit. Commonly on pods, rarely on telly, despite always giving a good insight.
Below the men's for me going by what appears to be their hiring criteria.
Nedum Onuoha played close to 200 Premier League games. If people are being hired to draw upon their playing experience when giving punditry on Premier League topics, he obviously has more relevant knowledge than someone who never did or never could through no fault of their own play in that league.
Pundits definitely are being asked to draw upon their playing experience. We know this because they don't hire people who know a lot about football and could talk well about it but never actually played or coached to do that particular job. Nor do they hire men or women who only played lower league or non-league but could speak well about the game as pundits.
That shouldn't have to be the case in my opinion, but that's what TV companies have decided should be the case. As such, if a man isn't deemed knowledgeable enough about the PL to hire him as a pundit due to not playing in that league then a woman who didn't play in that league (again due to no fault of her own) probably shouldn't be too. I see a contradiction of sorts there.
I'd be up for opening it up to literally everyone though if they made interesting points and were engaging. Give me ex-League Two men's players if they are good, give me female pundits who were never England internationals if they know their stuff - I think all female pundits currently on TV in the UK had loads of England caps. No Scottish, Welsh or NI internationals and definitely no women who were uncapped off the top of my head but I could be wrong. Don't give me Goldbridge, or DT from AFTV but if there's a fan, female or male who knows their stuff and could speak well somewhere on Youtube, give them a go on the telly too regardless of them playing or not. Punditry could do with a shake up, there's a lot of crap ones on the box.
I don't know Onuoha as a pundit, if he is good and with that experience I don't see why he shouldn't be on TV. He would seem to fit in with a lot of what they are looking for. I guess he's not quite a big enough name for them or didn't play enough times in the PL for them even though by default he played more often than a female pundit possibly could. Shouldn't stop them booking him in my opinion.
