If we're buying promising players let's aim high.

Martial
Rashford
Lingard
Felix
Sancho
Greenwood

Now that's a proper attack with huge potential.

That's a very inexperienced and underwhelming attack . Also we need to chill about Greenwood. I am sure he is a very talented younger player but he has not done anything yet to make it to our full fledged attack .

Yeah let's sign Bale instead. Winner and all that.

How about aiming for the League title instead of another 3-5 year "project" while celebrating Top 4 trophy; like Arsene-Arsenal always did when he's getting senile and old?

He'll never do anything yet for you as long as he isn't in the first team. Hopefully he makes the step up next season. I have listed him as the sixth option.

If there were elite talents who suited our team who were 24/25 years old and available I would have listed them. I bet Sancho outperforms any supposedly available 25 year old you can mention.

We got nowhere 'aiming for the league title' and signing star names. Then again, let's go for another Sanchez because established players mean you win stuff.

I'd be more jubilant if we signed Leon Bailey than Felix and Sancho! Plus he would cost less.

This pathetic negativity sums up the mentality of our fans at the moment.
We’ve lost one player in about 15 years who moved to a bigger club and went on to be a big success :lol: Or as the poster put it “used us as a stepping stone” :wenger:

Ok. So the 3-5 year project since SAF left, we’ve bought:

Fellaini
Di Maria
Schweinsteiger
Scheniderlin
Mhykitarian
Zlatan
Falcao
Sanchez
Bailly
Rojo
Mata
Matic
Pogba
Herrera
Lindelof
Martial
Lukaku
Dalot

The most exciting players out of that group are the young ones, Lindelof, Martial and Dalot. The rest are either overpriced stars who flopped or decent squad additions but not first 11 PL winning sides types of players, with the exception of Pogba.

Nobody wants to celebrate the top 4. But chasing next year’s results at the expense of building a generational side loaded with top talent is folly. We’ve done the star chasing, and it hasn’t worked out for us. It’s not who we are, and if you look at our history back to Sir Matt Busby, you’ll find that that our periods of great success coincided with large influxes of youth that built platforms for CL and PL titles. It’s who we are. If you want instant gratification, go support PSG or City.

All we've done is signed ready made players and we've failed miserably.

It has to be a mixed between young and established. There are plethora of established good players out there that can help us win the league, without being another 3-5 yrs project.
Why do you keep mentioning shite established players like Sanchez and Bale? Just for point scoring?

Missing out Zlatan there, wtf?

Matic and Herrera were fine additions, the rest... you have a point.

Ok. So the 3-5 year project since SAF left, we’ve bought:

Fellaini - meh
Di Maria - mega flop
Schweinsteiger - flop
Scheniderlin - flop
Mhykitarian - flop
Zlatan - decent
Falcao - flop
Sanchez - mega flop
Bailly - flop
Rojo - flop
Mata - meh
Matic - decent
Pogba - decent
Herrera - decent
Lindelof - good
Martial - good
Lukaku - decent
Dalot - too soon to call

Damn it looks bad when put it all together, no one can be considered a real success, and most are flops or only squad quality.

You missed Memphis. Worst I've seen wear the shirt in years. And I saw Bebe

I did miss Memphis. We bought him young, he was too immature. He was the one that did not work out. He’s doing well at OL though.... Bebe was a SAF buy, but he’s got quite a record. And SAF always bought younger than 26, with the exception of some last minute squad additions on 2 year contracts (Shearingham, Larsson, etc.)

No, for explaining the logic. Clearly there's no guarantee that an experienced player will produce better short term peformances and a young player will produce only in the long term. It depends on case to case.

Sancho may be a project in many ways, but from what I've he'll outperform most experienced pros on our right wing. He's got that magic in his feet that is more effective than other more experience options IMO.

So tell me who you'd bring in instead? Are we settling for glorious experience that has failed us in the past just for the sake of it or have you spotted genuine quality?

Of course ideally you want 4 established players and 2 rising stars but the world isn't ideal and I'd go for more upcoming stars if the established ones of that quality just aren't there.

we've got too many vital positions to fill to spend a wad on a luxury like this kid, IMO

he looks skilful but he doesn't play in a position we need or regularly use

Absolutely. Those who expect us to win the title next season are kidding themselves. It’s gonna be a process.

Felix and Sancho are just the type of young talent we built our success upon in years past.

Not signing the best or most decent player available at a particular position of need in any given window. That approach is what kept Liverpool from contending for so many years.

I'd argue that it should not be case of how we play now. Rather it's about what Ole is planning for in the future. And that to me is more promising than simply replacing player for player.

So if we assume Felix fits the bill for a future Ole envisions, then its a great signing. A player that by all accounts looks like he will grow into a next great. There's always the chance he's a flop but we do tend to do better with this type of signing than galactico type players.

He's been playing as a false nine though, and that's something we definitely need as neither Lukaku nor Rashford are good enough up front.

He’s a classic 10 who plays as a second striker or behind the striker in a 4-2-3-1. Lingard or Mata play that role for us, Felix is potentially a good upgrade. Lukaku and Rashford are 9’s.... Felix wouldn’t replace them.

Between Felix or Sancho who do we need more in this team. Felix could play in Lingard's false nine role as a creator with very strong awareness which our midfield and attack really lacks while Sancho would play on the right add some pace and create chances.

I think Felix would improve us creatively while Sancho would give us more options to attack with occupying the right hand side

If we were to pinball wazzard Lukaku...and dare I say it, possibly Martial, why not both?

The more we aim for instant success the more likely we'll go for proven players. That means players who had won it all, who took their share of hits and are now likely to aim for a place were they can get their last big pay cheque. Haven't we learnt our lesson from Sanchez, Bastian, Falcao and co?

I look at that list and what I see is managers spending money for one of these 3 reasons

a- they could (Di Maria, Falcao, Sanchez)
b- they risked losing the dressing room and they needed friendly loyal faces around (Bastian, Valdes, Matic)
c- they wanted to reinvent the wheel. There's no way that a CB whose not particularly good in air (ex Bailly or Rojo) could succeed at United. Same can be said about a beanpole in midfield (Fellaini) or a striker who provides only physicality (Lukaku)

So what exactly should we do?

a- We should go back to the basics ie pass to feet football, lot of pressing, quick tempo football.
b- We should bring in kids with the right characteristics to play that game.
c- We should bring some sort of wage structure back. You can't have a backup player as the biggest earner at the club

That's the formula that United always used to win. Will it bring instant success? The answer is probably not. It took SAF years to win his first EPL title. But the same thing can be said about signing renowned players who are so shot that they wouldn't mind turning down the top dogs to settle to a comfortable top 4 contenders that we had become.

We wouldn't have to get rid of Lukaku AND Martial. Look at City's depth in attack.

Lukaku should leave because he's technically limited as a player which means he can only be a backup player. That doesn't make sense for him to stay and it doesn't make sense for us to keep him considering the crazy salary he's probably on to. Let sell him now before he causes problems in the dressing room or his value nosedive to the ridiculous.

Zlatan is under Mhykitarian.... Fine addition, gave us our swagger back a bit. But still.....

I meant that Zlatan should never be in the ”flop” or ”decent squad additions” list, if anything he’s been the biggest success of them all, the one signing that was truly World Class. Only shame with Zlatan was the injury cutting short what would have been a brilliant couple of seasons.

Agreed. He's been the only signing post fergie with the right mentality, consistency and technical ability to back it up

Although I wouldn't mind him, feel Dybala is a more ready made player for that false nine position.

Funny how Felix is overtaking Sancho in people's transfer wishlist ever since his hatrick or the people thinking we can get both of them which is just impossible

I'd take Sancho over Felix... Why? Because he's young, talented, creative and a right winger and English. Sancho also seems more realistic in the sense that he would prefer a move to England

I also think Sancho is the perfect winger to get if we're going with Rashford as our main striker simply because he tends to keep the ball on the ground rather than send in crosses as Rashford isn't capable of heading. Sancho also seems more physically ready than Felix who seems more of a la Liga type player

Maybe it's possible to get both of them but definitely not this summer. We have to get one though because the longer we wait the more clubs will come after them

I don’t disagree. My preference would be Sancho as well. However, Dortmund has been adamant that they will not sell him this summer. Other than Dembele, they’ve always stood by these types of comments previously (Lewandowski, Hummels, Gotze, Pulisic, etc.). We need a RW now, Felix is not a RW. With Mata leaving, only Lingard and Dalot can play RW.

Can you afford not to bring in Felix, hoping that Dortmund do a 180 and sell Sancho this summer? I think not.

It is possible that you do the deal for Sancho this summer, but he moves over in the summer of 2020, a la Naby Keita. German clubs seem to operate this way.

I've always wanted to get Felix ahead of Sancho well before he scored his hattrick. He could be used in varying formation as opposed to Sancho. Felix could be used as a second striker or a false 9 apart from the wings. Sancho will be found out after his first season in the PL. I also think Felix has few more gears to be a much better player than Sancho. Dortmund will hold us ransom to some crazy money unlike for Felix. I think we could convince Benfica to sell him for 60 odd million as opposed to 100m that's being quoted for Sancho.

Young players is who we should be signing. Look at how much of Utd's recent business has been signing big names past their best, often on big wages. The only area I'd probably say we should be going for experience is CB where we need someone who can actually organise the defence and be the leader at the back, something which generally comes with a bit of experience. Otherwise I'd be happy for Utd to fill their attacking positions with hot prospects building for the future.

Look at what Bayern are doing, their team has come to an end of its era but they are signing up top youngsters to build their next generation rather than going for established stars which a) are even more expensive and b) often aren't even attainable as most are already tied up at top clubs.

Felix’s release clause is €120m... I don’t see a scenario where he moves for less than 90m. We just paid 50m for Fred!

Agree. What people don’t realize is that the fee is only part of the cost of bringing a player in. The 5 year guaranteed contract is, in some scenarios, a bigger expense than the transfer fee. When buying established players, the contract is much higher than for a youngster. So Matic cost only 30m, but a 3 year contract at 140k per week is another 22m in commitments.

Sanchez was a £108m 4 1/2 year contract plus a 20m signing bonus. If we buy a Greizmann or Dybala this summer, in addition to the 100m+ transfer fee, they are going demand a similar contract.

Sign both Felix and Sancho.

Any ope they both fulfill potential because our attack is gash.

Felix this summer, then Sancho next. If Zaniolo is not happy with Ranieri and the mess Roma seems to be in we should also be after him.

With Sancho, Felix, Zaniolo and Greenwood we will have 4 of the biggest attacking talents in Europe. All relatively complete in their abilities compared to more specialized players like Rashford and Martial.
