Jesse Lingard

It's a good decision. We have no need for £3m, I'd much rather Newcastle go down. The mistake was not offloading Jesse last season to West Ham for about £15m and instead holding out for £20m+.

Given that we've now lost Martial, Greenwood and Donny, I'd bet Lingard gets more game time. An injury to either of Rashford or Sancho and he'll be getting a lot of minutes.
It amazes me that Rangnick doesn't employ Lingard because he is an ideal pressing player.

Doesn't seem like Rangnick's "consultancy" role is that serious.
No, I'm increasingly thinking we just agreed to it because we felt the mess we were in was sufficient to justify paying him whatever both his managerial and consultancy wages will come to in order to have him for the rest of this season.

Doesnt make sense to lose Lingard when Greenwood wont be returning to first team action any time soon. If at all.

Also if Rangnick wants to play with two 8s in front of a 6, i would have Fernandes and Lingard as 8s before i would have Fred and Fernandes. We need Jesse as an option.
He's still learning. Took him nearly three weeks to ditch the 4222, maybe he will eventually start using some of his squad players soon.

Right move or not, they are basically overruling Rangnick who said Jesse could go, it's pretty clear Rangnick has 0 authority at this club now, nor will he have in the future.

They aren’t overruling him at all. RR has supposedly said that he won’t stand in the way of Lingard getting his transfer. However, the club has put a valuation on the player and if it isn’t offered we aren’t going to release him. That’s not undermining RR, that’s basic business sense.

Rangnick said he could leave. Board vetoed.
Love the cohesion at the club....

Gives you a lot of confidence in how much Rangnick's consultancy will mean, eh?

Don't understand this at all.

People saying we're showing other clubs we won't be bullied. :wenger: How can you think that after Rojo, Romero, Darmian etc?

Our unwillingness to make any money off of Lingard will not stop us getting our pants pulled down in the market. Cos the market knows we're willing to spend £50m on Fred and Wan-Bissaka and pay players £300k a week for finishing fourth.

I prefer the 6 and two 8s set up. It is more forward thinking. Worked against West Ham. But we needed midfield reinforcements even on loan and have done zilch.

We could have gotten a few million in loans if we reduced the crazy asking price and dropped the 'survival bonus' rubbish.

Instead he walks for free in a few months.

Feck him. Should have thought about it when he was posting West Ham pictures.
Sadly it is idiotic stunts like that let him down. I rate him. When his head is screwed on and his mind is on football he is top quality and for me a starter. He showed this on loan at West Ham but i think he benefitted from being away from distractions in Manchester.

I still don’t think it’s completely out of the question he leaves tonight, but let’s see.

Crazy decision by the board. Should have got £5-£6mil loan fee for the player from Newcastle. Some money rather than nothing for a player whos leaving for free in the summer.

If it wasnt for our greed last summer we could have got £15mil for him.

I wonder what’s changed since 2 weeks ago that may result in him getting more game time now…that’s a tricky one alright.
Keeping a player that hasn't put in a good performance as a wide forward in forever as cover for the wide forward roles? I'd like to say I understand it but I'm a bit lost.

The only thing we've ensured is a couple of crap performances off the right wing and a fat signing on bonus for Jesse in summer.

Kinda missing the point of him being kept there big brain
wtf are you talking about? He was offered a contract, turned it down. He's disrespected the club with his West Ham posts. Now the club are making things difficult for him. Other players might now think twice about pissing us about, trying to run down their contracts and leaving on frees to get their big sign on bonuses. Remember the example Chelsea made of Malouda? Not many players have messed them about since, have they?

Rangnick didn't take the job because he was offered the consultancy role. And he made that clear in his first press conference. It was rather the club that wanted him to take the role as consultant.

Who was paying that? Nobody bid for him let alone came close to that price. We could have got it in this window if he had accepted the offer from Newcastle of a permanent deal but he wants a loan with a fat bonus and then still wants to sign a fat contract as a Free Agent. Greed is the issue but Jesse is the culprit not the club.

He wont start more than a handful of games from now until the end of the season. Take the 8m (in loan + survival bonus) and run

Maybe you missed the part where they vetoed it because of circumstances yesterday they need cover?
so your point of letting him rot without playing totally misses the point

I don't think I buy that. When he was first linked as a candidate it was reported that he would only take it if offered a job upstairs to follow. It seems unlikely that those reports were untrue but it's what happened anyway.

He cleared said that he took the job with out any conditions. Guido Schafer who is a Journo close to him also said the same on a podcast. It was United that insisted he become consultant.

Agreed.

Even with what's happened over the weekend, Rashford, Sancho and Elanga are all ahead of Lingard in the pecking order. In reality he's competing with Mata for a spot on the bench.

All of which is supposing Rangnick will rotate Cavani and Ronaldo at centre forward. If Rangnick decides to play them together for even a handful of games, that will give Jesse even less of an opportunity to play.

I'd actually be pleased if this seemed like a thought through response to a need in the team. However, its not. Its just Man Utd trying to show we're tough. It should have been obvious this is how it'd end up after Romero and Rojo. I just thought the club had learned to be smarter. Silly me.

How stupid does this look? Rangnick has twice told Jesse he can leave but the Board is like: 'Nah.' Full Matteo Darmian treatment.

He’s literally won us 2 points off the bench against a top 4 rival this season in a wide position. Maybe the 100m on offer in CL money will help you get unlost…oh and the fact Mata would be two injuries away from being first choice should he leave. This isn’t difficult stuff.

I think we're only get Lingard's side of the story from the journalists.

Lingard was offered a new contract earlier in the season and he rejected it. The club could have sold him to West Ham last summer but opted to include him in future plans. I think Lingard and his advisors decided early on that he would test the free market and get themselves a big signing on fee and the club have decided to make an example of him - take the club for a ride and you will be frozen out. Good luck playing in the world cup now.

Yeah, I'm saying I think he's lying and if this journo is close to him he presumably got that story from him.

Why even have Rangnick here for two years after his interim manager job ends? Clearly no one in the club gives a feck what the guy thinks.

Ok- here’s a prediction. Lingard will get plenty of minutes until the end of the season and earn himself a new contract with us…written in the stars
