I don't understand why not let him leave for a minimal fee or even free this summer. It is obvious to all parties that Lingard has no intention to renew his contract and he has no place in the team either. He is from the Man Utd academy so he didn't cost the club any transfer fee either. Another weird one is Van de Beek, why not loan him out?
 
Why were we offering him a new contract? Have they given any indication how long the contract was for?

I'd like to know what we priced him at, I guess it's getting the balance right as he will probably do well at a mid table PL club, he was doing great at Westham, but we can't price them out of buying him

I wonder if we had said he would play, until our last minute purchase of Ronaldo. I'd imagine Jesse will get some games as can't see Ronaldo being wheeled out for early round FA Cup or league Cup games unless we get our usual all PL tie.

I think another PL Club would be a good move for Jesse, he did well at Brighton when on loan there, same with Westham.
 
We’d be daft not to offer him a new contract despite what a lot of you numpties think.

The key thing is not to offer him a contract that makes him a pain in the arse to move on. If we can’t get him on favourable terms we let him leave for free which is how it should be.

I'm a big Ole fan and really want him to succeed here. But until he wins trophies he doesn't have the clout to stir things up and challenge the people who decide if he has a job or not. For now he has to toe the line on these sort of things.
 
It was bad enough the club didn't move him on this summer, but a new contract offer? What a nightmare for a sub-par player who is surplus to requirements. I have to thank Lingard for turning it down, hopefully it's not just a negotiating tactic.

Of course. The club gave Bailly a new deal even though it knew Varane was on the cards. The 'protect value' strategy isn't it? We all see it's ludicrous. But the suits at Old Trafford. God knows what they see. Can't afford a new #6 but can afford peeing away by hundreds of thousands a week on unneeded players.
 
From his point of view I can 100% understand it. Next year he will have many options as free agent. Maybe he wants to join a club which is not far away so he can stay close to his family.
It’s the club‘s fault to hand him a big money contract.

That's the thing that pissed me off. As a Club, we're still catching up to be back as top Club in the last ~10 years. Then we have these brain dead decisions that are actually easy to avoid.
 
If this is true, it's extremely disappointing. This club never learns. Mind boggling to me that we're still trying to keep people like Jones, Baily, Lingard, etc here. You'd never see this kind of shit at any other big club.
 
Another sign of how weak Ole is as a manager. Why not just let him leave this summer? His sentimentality has cost us funds for an additional midfielder.

There’s an element of truth in that but I also feel that Jesse is playing us like a fiddle.

SAF would never have stood for this. He’d have been out the fecking door

Absolutely. Jesse’s timing is also impeccable, not even waiting a week after the transfer window slammed shut. He knew exactly what he was doing, feeding Ole and the media bullshit about wanting to fight for his place.

They must think they can sell them on. That's the only logical reason for giving new contracts to the dead weight players

Be more ruthless. Start entertaining offers from clubs, make it clear that Lingard has no future here. I’m sure clubs would’ve made offers if we’d made him available. The softly softly approach that he employs opens the doors for players like Lingard to take the piss and pick up paycheck after paycheck. See Phil Jones for another example.

Now we have a player that won’t play, won’t sign a new deal, with a dwindling transfer value and worst of all, will keep uploading shitty videos on Instagram.

We really need to start looking at how the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea flog players - we could learn a thing or two.
 
Ronaldo signed so maybe he's thinking I’ve got no chance now. Time to move on in January. The club are probably thinking about squad depth hence the new contract.

The strategy seems to be to offer contracts to most squad players as it maintains their value in the open market........rather than their value decreasing with only a year left ot worse, leaving on a free.

Problem with that is we end up giving contract renewals out like confetti and then can't sell the bl**dy players
 
It's unfortunate but after this transfer window I thought the club had moved on from making bad decisions, took a good week to prove me wrong. Idk what's worse the fact that they decided not to sell, the fact they offered a new deal or the fact that they're surprised Jesse rejected the deal. Shambolic after such a good window.

Yup, without knowing the ins of outs of these situations it just looks like a really preventable situation,

You've got a player with 1 year left on his contract who is going to see so little game time this season, why not just sell him ? I cannot fathom any logical scenario where keeping him was the right option, Injuries ? in his position there is more than enough cover, really bizarre business and naturally frustrating that we seem to have this nostalgic view on certain players where we can't just cut the cord,

Jones, Mata, Lingard, Matic, Martial , just sell or get rid of them all and bring in new blood, players who we can actually use

Agree with this. The Jones renewal remains the most bizarre renewal I've seen, and Ole keeps talking him up, we should never have renewed him and certainly not on a 4 year deal. At the absolute maximum he should have got a 1 year pay as you play type contract if those still exist, however he should have been sold to a smaller club or not renewed. I know it seems harsh but we are effectively paying him (the amount I'd be interested to know) to effectively reside in the treatment room. Yes he's been unlucky with injuries but we knew how injury prone the guy was, yet still give him a 4 year new contract, wasn't he injured at the time too?

Spot on, our transfer policy re selling is non existant; the clubs becoming more like a woke social services than a football club.

Redcafe is the #1 United forum in the world & Lingard is a lifelong United fan. I would be shocked if he hadn’t heard of it. He’s probably lurked after games where he’s played well.

Supposedly told West Ham early in the summer he wanted to fight for his place here. Aka he was always going to sit out his final year and make as much money for himself as possible as a free agent in the summer or hope we panic and give him an improved deal. Fair enough. We are clearly stupid enough to go for that so he wasn’t really wrong…

It doesn't seem that hard to fathom possible scenarios where he doesn't get sold and the club is blameless.

If only one side came in for him for a transfer fee and he wasn't keen for his own personal reasons, then what are we to do..throw his bags outside Carrington?

Maybe his agent advised him this in view of more varied or lucrative options next summer. Maybe he didn't like the club. Maybe it was for family and geographical reasons, who actually knows beyond the fact he has the deciding vote even if we accept a fee.

I think a lot of the frustration comes from too many assumptions. People assuming Ole did X, or the club could have done Y. Well, maybe they could, maybe they did, but if the player has the control then we can act perfectly and it can still play out in the manner we've seen.
 
I don’t blame him at all. He has one more year of making good wages and being able to say he’s a United player for the brand. Had we sold him this summer he wouldn’t get the wages he’s on now and because there’s no transfer fee he likely matches his current wages at his next club. This is of our own doing.

Not now. Wait a couple months to see wether he can be a useful player. If he is, then sure, offer away. If he plays 20 minutes in 3 months, you're basically throwing money away...

33 goals in 5 years as a regular, 13 of those coming in one season, after which he completely bought into his own hype.

Theres a footballer in there somewhere, but mainly the guys a fecking grifter, happy to continue to use his association with Utd to build his "brand" for another year, then pick up a signing on bonus somewhere on a free.

It's turns out Lingard agrees with you that there's no sentimentality in football, yet for some reason you're offended by his ''ransom'' claims. If football fans want to spend years slagging off their own players then fine but they shouldn't expect any form of loyalty, even if the players are from the academy.

It's really not that difficult.
