Our best chance today is going to be when their defence isnt set. However each time we get a chance like this Jesse kills it by playing the ball behind the run or overhitting it.

Having what would be described as a typical Lingard game... you know before he got good

He’s better when he has the chance to run at opponents. His passing range and vision is quite weak which severely limits him in certain games.

Squad player quality. It's what he is. Squad players can hit purple patches of form but ultimately, they shouldn't be seen as a starter long term.

His passing was horrendous today. More so than usual. Killed a lot of moves with just sloppy lazy passing. There was one point we had a break building Ashley was running down the left and all Lingard had to do was put it infront of Young and instead he put it behind him stopping all the momentum.
I know some have him as a god but these things happen in a lot of games.

Back to a squad player he goes.

He was even worse than Pogba today with the ball and that's saying something. But to be fair, he did cover for Pogba defensively at least.

He's back to Earth and should probably be dropped now. He's causing our two best attacking players to be played out of their best (or favored positions) just to accommodate Lingard in the #10 role. Alexis should play in Lingard's role, Martial should play left wing, and right wing can be either Mata, Lingard or Rashford.

Definitely not Lingard's fault today and he was constantly trying, so nobody can question his work-rate, unlike for some of our super-star players.

Have absolutely no idea why everyone was acting like he wasn't bang average for seasons before he hit some decent form for the last couple of months. He should be playing when, or even if, he manages to put in the kind of performances he's been putting in recently on a far more consistent basis, say a season or 2, instead of just a month or 2. It all got well out of hand really, still, i'm still hoping this is just a lull and he plays again how he's been playing recently, god knows we need all the help we can get with our next 3 league games

Having him on no10 instead of mata is hugely affecting our game. I still don't know what is he doing in a game. He scored couple of goals, ànd it was great. But except that, what should be his role on no10 position? No10 player is either playmaker or seco d striker. He is what? Player who runs around and links up with other players. Sorry but it is not enough for me

Not his day today, looked more like his former self which I hope isn't a shape of things to come. Correct decision to take him off.

His lack of consistency is why he will only ever be a squad player.

Now drop him so we can play a proper 433.

This is the only positive, I guess. Jose won't feel pressured to start him because of hot form anymore.

In most of his recent performances he has looked to me to be a talented player even if his impact on the game was minimal. Today his touch was too often poor and overall he looked ordinary. The case for 3 in midfield is a lot stronger when Lingard performs poorly.

The irony of being miserable is that being miserable also is your karma.

Imagine being a Man Utd-supporter, caring about our traditions, and not being able to appreciate a player like Jessie Lingard. I almost feel sorry for you.

When hating him for his performances becomes an unrealistic stand point.....

Haha busted!

Good work

I've already said that he wasn't good enough.

One match take away from the fact that he's been one of our best players in the last 3 months, even if you won't admit it. ;)

Should a good 3 months take away from the seasons of average before it? ;)

Well, considering the previous seasons before the problem with him was a) - his consistency and b) - the amount of goals he's scored.
He's improved on both, so it's a different scenario.

Sorry to be the bearer of good news.

Hey i want Lingard to succeed, i'm not wishing he fails just in order for me to gloat. My point is everyone shot their load far too quickly, 3 months of form shouldn't be enough to erase the memories of seasons of dross before it. His entire play was average lets be honest, he needs to replicate this 3 month form for a season or 2 before he should truly be considered a great player for us, otherwise he should be a squad player at best

So he needs to assist or score in 80% of the league matches that he starts in, for an entire season OR 2, before ‘we’ can call him a great player?

I would love to know who in our squad is replicating this achieveable form.

I didn't say he needed to score or assist in 80% of the matches he starts in, he could start with not being invisible or a hindrance on the pitch on a consistent basis, he's been great for the last 3 months, lets see it roll on, i'm not jumping on the bandwagon.

Not his day yesterday. He battled hard and put a shift in in a deeper role but you never felt he was given the best chance to positively influence the game for us, up the pitch stretching Newcastle's defensive players.

I certainly don't see this as some return to the mean, we now know Jesse has something to offer us in future. However with some regret I'd advocate him being dropped if it meant a more solid three man midfield.

That’s fair, for what it’s worth I think long term he’s a squad player, and needs to be played centrally to be most effective.

Equally, our attacking line is still quite new and our midfield is a shambles, so all of our attackers are playing at a lower level than they are capable of right now.

I’d ideally like to see a midfield 3 and Jessi, Mata & Rashford rotating with Sanchez and Martial

For me it's the issue of needing a RW, which is what we all assumed he bought Sanchez for, but instead it stinks of opportunism because we've forced our best LW to the right in order to accommodate him and it's left things a bit unbalanced. Pogba obviously wants to play more advanced in the midfield but centrally so will Jesse obviously but then that leaves a giant gaping hole in our midfield which Matic can't cover all by himself, it's all a bit of a mess that's Jose's doing currently.

Quiet in here now...

Premier League Stats:
  • 3rd highest goal scorer for us this season (7)
  • Joint 2nd highest assists this season (4)
  • 3rd Highest Pass Success Rate from players with 500+ mins this season (87.2%)
Jesse certainly has weakness' in his game. Needs to demand the ball more and get involved more during a game. I also think he needs to work on his pressing (but Martial, Rashford and Lukaku are just as bad which makes me think tactically we don't press high up the pitch).

Bit odd you'd signal him out this game, but you're obviously an agenda poster. I don't know why I bother to even argue the point as you'll always find negatives.

I'm avoiding arguing about players but just thought I'd correct you.
Pogba, Rashford, Mkhi and Lukaku all have more assists for us in the PL. Don't know about the passing but Mkhi can show that statistics can sometimes be misleading.

I will say he has improved considerably this season. I'll leave it there.

Fair point, technically he's joint 5th assister, only 1 behind though.

Stats can only be misleading when given no context though Paul. For Lingard to have that high percentage is impressive given he's an attacker, he's not a sideways passer either. I do think he has clear problems in his game though and I also think the purple patch of form is coming to and end.

My problem with United though is our team balance, for me it's entirely wrong throughout the team so we get disjointed performances from our players.
