Just 19 touches so far, this formation of 3 at the back isn't helping him but I can't recall him doing anything productive when he has been played into. Just passes the ball where it came from, so frustrating to watch.

He's probably a better left back given that's where he is playing. I don't get playing Darmian because he's 'good defensively' then have somebody else do his job at left back.

Pogba's been the one out on the left wing for the majority of the half with Lingard coming inside an awful lot, offensively and defensively.

he sums up the difference in class between us and real, he's a starter for us and yet he wouldn't get nowhere near the real bench

He's playing as a wing back it seems. He's done alright considering.

Agreed. He is miles off the standard required.

Martial should be starting every game on the left.

77k per week for this turd. He never should have made it to the first team two years ago.

It's really quite incredible that such a hopeless player is a first team regular for us. If he was at Real Madrid they'd use him as toilet paper.

He's a very limited player. Mourinho must see that? Defensive contributions are one thing, but he literally stifles our attack. I rate him now and then, but he's not cut out for us to be a starter, especially in a game like this.

Wouldn't be so bad if Lingard wasn't ahead of fecking Darmian. Dearie me!

I was just going to post the very same. I can't think of a less adequate left wing in my time as a fan.

The left flank was non existent offensively and whilst our right flank wasn't particularly great either, Valencia at least got forward and offered some threat.

However as much as I'd loved to have seen Martial, playing Lingard was probably the better choice given our set up. We had Valencia as the more attacking full back with Darmian almost playing as a tucked in LCB. We needed a more industrious left flank presence (due to our setup of course) and also due to the fact that we were against Carvajal and he'd basically gotten free reign against Martial who isn't particularly great defensively. We were struggling to get near them and whilst Martial's trickery and pace would have been a notable threat, he wouldn't really have helped with stemming the tide, and Real could potentially have been even more dominant, once again given our particular set up. Now Lingard wouldn't have been necessary if we had a more conventional back four as opposed to the fairly lop sided set up we were sporting, with Darmian tucked in. Wasn't really a fan of that set-up as it was just too passive and defensive for my liking.

Even then I really would love to see Pereira given a shot at that role instead of Lingard. He's versatile, hardworking and has played that role as the wide midfielder for Granada previously if I remember correctly. Whilst he is a slight downgrade on Lingard's pace and directness, he brings more inventiveness and the same grit and work rate that Mourinho cherishes. Most importantly, he'd actually offer a great out-ball with his movement off the ball, crisp passing and link up play. We were far too static in possession and a willing and intelligent mover like Pereira could have helped us immensely.

I just waiting for someone to post that YouTube video on 'the positives of Jesse Lingard' :D

Amazingly giving him a huge payrise hasn't made him a better player, weird.

He's just no threat whatsoever. He almost never is.

We'll get the usual people on here in the coming days bringing out his distance covered stats, and pass completion records and all that guff.

Ultimately I think a Utd winger should offer something going forward. Opposition full backs must love playing up against him because they know they don't have much defending to do and can get forward themselves. Didn't the Madrid right back assist their opener?

Another amazing game. His movement was perfect. And the way how he opens space. And his runing... Wow. I hope that we have min release clause for him because psg will come.
feck me , i can't believe that he plays in man utd. In first 11. I just can't.....

I really don't get it. He starts most games, yet is always the first player to get subbed.
He does not bring anything to the team.

What's the point in starting him? Has to stop.

Jose probably didn't want to embarrass Real twice and this time kept Martial on the bench.

10/10

100k a week, imagine all the things one can do with 100k a week, but smart people at man utd donate it to this moron.

He shouldn't be starting. He's not good enough. I don't think he's even that good of a squad option but hopefully he kicks on this year seeing as José seems a big fan.

He is not the quality of wingers we should be having to start in our first XI. And that's not because of a lack of options, because we had Martial on the bench who didn't even get a look in. At one point you have to stop thinking of forwards' defensive contributions and choose the player who is best at what he is supposed to do, attack. We saw this all of last season, I had hoped it would change after that pre-season Martial has had, but it's worrisome that Mourinho is ignoring talent. He could end up being the KDB that leaves us in seasrch of first team football.

Lingard, like Fellaini, is limited and knows his limitations. He still puts in 100% effort. But so did Rooney, and I don't know how long it will take Mourinho to give Martial a regular starting spot on the left.

Swear to god if he starts over martial, mata or rashford against West Ham I'm going to kidnap Jose.

Utterly pointless player

He is just a survivor. He is shit, he will play next few games like shit, then he will score a goal in some big match which will buy him next few games. And like that whole season.

Poor game in a role not really suited to him.

He's a decent squad player and I can see the value he brings to the team but he should just not be starting for us if we aim for the league title.

I'm a Lingard fan but it's hard to justify his selection on days like this. This thread will deteriorate very quickly if he still gets picked but doesn't up his performance.

He's a mid table level player who's only here because he went through the academy. Sure he has the occasional good game? But most of the time, he doesnt provide anything. He doesnt even really offer something different to the rest. Just drifts around and does nothing.

Selling him would be like a new signing because players who are way better than him will finally get to play.

Unfortunately the defense of him being a decent squad option holds no weight nowadays.

Because he is a starter in most games.

Should be nowhere near the starting 11. Wouldn't start in any of our PL rivals' starting XI.

I was told to improve the quality of my posts on the match day thread for laughing in disbelief at his inclusion and it sharply illustrating the contrast in quality between us and Real.

Why these "top reds" don't see the comedy of it I can't understand. He's been like this - with some punctuated moments of quality - since he made his debut.

He had no place starting against Madrid, hugely out of his depth.
