Jermaine Defoe

Yes

How can you even try and argue otherwise re Rossi? If he's not a talented kid what exactly is he?

Mind you, you think Defoe's rubbish.....clueless

What an arrogant prick! Rossi is a futurestar not just a talented kid. You should know one when you see one if you had eyes. Asa for Defoe, the fecking selfish midget can't even get into his club side let alone the England side ahead of a 17 year old. And he is top class? You really think Jol is clueless too? You are really brainless.....

Rossi is a future star, yes. Or at least, has the ability to be one. At the current point in time, Defoe is by conventional standards "better", but that's because he's a few years older and has done it in the league before now. Comparing the two is a bit silly; one has bags of potential, one is a player coming into his prime that's probably fulfilled some, but not all, of his promise.

If you were putting a team together for 60 games next year and wanted a first choice striker you'd probably be safest picking Defoe. If you want a player for the next 5+ years, and to play a bit part role, you'd take Rossi, with the belief he'd become a much better player than Defoe over that time.

Innit.

I think Rossi looks magic, but I wouldn't call him "better" than a player like Defoe yet because he hasnt had a chance to make a big impact on the Premiership. Yet. He (probably - you can never be sure with youngsters) will be eventually, if it doesn't go tits up, but I'd imagine every manager in the premiership would put Defoe in their starting XI above Rossi for the first match of next season, because he's proven.

Saying that, they're different bloody players. One's more a forward, ones a straight striker.

I dont think Defoe is the answer, either.

It's not closely related to the thread but may i ask a question...If we put aside "top" strikers like Ronaldo (fat or not), Luca Toni, Torres, etc, who'd you think would suit United amongst younger players that do not have skyrocketting prices ?

I mean, among for instance Defoe, Huntelaar...?

If Ruud is sold, and esp. for 15M£ at most, i cannot see many strikers for that price

I was delighted when we signed him. Exactly what we needed for a bargain price....he is a cnut mind
I think he'l do well at Liverpool. Crouch Bellamy is potentially a good combination. He was excellent last season. Bellamy that is.

Harry Rednapp said:
“I signed him as a 15 year old and used to watch him score every week from when he was a young boy. He is up there with Rooney, who is the best striker I have seen in years, as the best front man.

What's with the Defoe hype? Scorer but nothing else.

Don't see the Rooney comparison at all - there is none.

However, he is more than 'nothing else'. He has worked a lot on his build up game, its not ground breaking but its good enough. The little dummies he makes for his strike partners are impressive.

And he is pretty dependable in the scoring department. There aren't a lot of strikers who convince you that they can score in any match, on any level and against any team

Like I've said before, for everything that's wrong with his game, he is deadly around the box. His movement doesn't get the credit that Torres, Owen, Ruud etc receive and he is brillisnt at manufacturing that crucial yard.

If things are going against you, he never creates something for anybody else, he's greedy and is often anonymous. Remember the game against us? He scored a great goal but then barely touched the ball. When he's out of form (which he has been for a bit) he's a complete passenger.

But he scored a goal though..... I'm not saying it's the be all and end all but it's pretty important. You don't score, you don't win.

Quite often this is pointed out as a weakness in Defoe, whereas in other, similar players, it is seen as a strong point.

Agree. Quite often it all depends if the player is "fashionable" or not. I hate this argument but if Redknapp brought a brazilian striker into the club in the Summer and he scored 15goals at this stage in the league alone this season everyone would be raving about him.

It's seen as a strong point if he can score goals while not playing well, but if he can't do anything besides that while playing well then it's seen as a weak point.

I don't rate him and it saddens me England have to rely on Heskey or him to partner Wayne in all likelihood.. yuk.

For all the goals he gets, he's still a very inconsistent finisher and his play outside the box leaves alot to be desired especially against top class opposition.

He has all the raw tools to be amazing and yet all these years I've spent watching him.. he's just looked like a glorified Andy Johnson instead of the new coming of Michael Owen which is what he should aspire to be.

I just hope Carlton Cole can cement himself alongside Wayne by the end of this season.

...
I agree that he's an inconsistent finisher - he misses a fair few chances. But then again many of the chances that he gets are self-made, which, for all his relative lack of team play outside the box, is a definite plus for any striker.

Overall it's pretty hard to dismiss 20 goals already this season in all competitions. If he hadn't fluffed all his penalty chances he'd be ahead of Rooney's leading total of 22 goals - a total that includes 4 pens.

If he keeps it up he's well on target for his best ever season goals-wise, with 30+ being possible.

10 goals in 19 appearances.

Time to put him in the fantasy team? I personally thought Adebayor would start majority of the games for Spurs but it seems like Defoe is first choice.
