Okay thanks for the clarity, so what makes a strong squad player a better option than a weak first team player? Also how do we differentiate between stong squad players and weak first 11 players?

A strong squad player offers more to a team than a weaker first team player, as he is not restricted to certain positions and can impact a game from the bench irrespective of Formation, tactics etc.

A strong squad player's effectiveness isn't necessarily based on playing in his preferred position but his ability to still be effective in any of his roles for the team(Park,Milner,Mascherano - during his stint on the bench,Modric etc), a weak first team player is usually second/third best at the position in his team and usually ends up on the bench (unless he becomes a utility player -Young), he usually doesn't provide any impact from the bench.

So besides RWB in a 3-4-3, where does he slot in for Liverpool? Don't see where he can play centrally with Hendo, Can, Allen, and Lucas all there, could he?

I think he'll play central midfield which is what he's after by all accounts.

Bar Henderson they don't have much energy in there.

Probably midfield. A pretty uninspiring bunch really.

God forbid we still play 3-4-3 next season... I think he'd be the RCM in a midfield diamond, and a CM or emergency right winger in a 4-3-3. I'd like to see him on the wing though, he makes some very intelligent runs.

Oh yes but doesn't he occasionally start in the middle? I think he's a pretty decent handyman tbf.

Very rarely. That's part of the reason he allegedly is considering leaving, not just because he isn't playing as regularly as he'd like but also because he doesn't get a chance to play centrally. I don't think he can complain though, when City played him there when he first signed he was poor there and he definitely seems best out wide for City, plus it's clear Toure and Fernandinho are just better CM's than him.

Fingers crossed we can pull the signing off.

Can seems to be playing at Cb and Allen and Lucas are shit.

Lucas is a decent DM, which is also Can's favoured position. Hopefully Can will get plenty of time in the right position during FA/LC/EL games.

Good for him if he as turned down CL football to go into the unknown. Dodged a bullet there.

He makes me shudder every time he puts on an England shirt. He gives everything sure, but just isn't good enough.

I don’t think he’s too bad a player. Not brilliant as such, but he’s often put in decent performances for City and is certainly a fairly useful squad player.

Agreed. Glad Liverpool are getting him for the reported tune of £150k per week. They don't need more squad filler like him, they need quality.

Some of the RAWKbola sufferers over at RAWK reckon he's a £20m signing were he under contract. I mean after all, RvP cost £24m with one year left on his contract.... :wenger:

You read Rawks Milner thread and you would swear they are talking about a prime Xavi.
I mean i know they are feeling down after this season and their transfer targets have hardly been something to get their blood flowing but feck me, this is James fecking Milner they are talking about, a player that they would be pissing themselves over if it was us signing him.

That much?! As I said, he’s a decent squad option and can put in good performances, but that’s pretty extreme for a player who’s not that good. Obviously he’d have been on big money at City because they can afford it with ease, but I’m surprised to see anyone going over £100k for him.

Yep, plus a hefty signing on fee as well.

I agree to an extent. He is not as shit as we all like to think and say he is - everyone's shit for England so that's no barometer. While I'd be fecking livid if we signed him, he could do a job for Liverpool.

They just need to be ruthless and sack him off quickly as soon as he declines or he will soon just be another Johnson - on the scrap heap.

Anyone that thinks Milner wouldn't be a good signing for Liverpool is kidding themselves.

Hes a properly good workhorse of a player, but theyre kidding themselves if hes going to make the difference theyre hoping for. He helps others shine, but in this case he will only help them discover their stars like Sturridge are nowhere near as good as they think they are.

I suppose Dirk Kuyt was a good player for them, and Milner is similar in many ways.

He made 32 appearances this season amongst a packed City midfield that consists of Yaya Toure, Fernandinho, and Silva. Clearly he's not as terrible as some are making out.

He didn't take up any of their positions, though...

He's probably better centrally than most of them anyway.

He's not going to change the way they play or win them trophies but he'll be a good addition to a team. Liverpool is the perfect place to go for him because he'll get to play on a regular basis there and they're still a decent club. He'd have less of an impact at Arsenal but he'd get to play in a better team, all in all I reckon it's a good decision from him to move on.

The sad thing is they were all pretty negative about the transfer on the whole until one of the mods had a massive hissy fit and completely locked the entire transfer forum until they all promised only to say nice things.

Saying that, he's not a bad player at all. Solid addition to any team, especially on a free. However I don't think neither him nor Ings will do much to address Liverpool's major issues from last season, and it must be a worrying indication of where your team's going when James Milner is going to be your highest paid player.

Where did you get that from? I cannot believe we would offer him that kind of money.

I'd be happy with Milner but he can't be our only midfield signing, we need someone from the crop of Nainggolan, Pjanic or Moutinho to really improve.

Would be a good signing. But he's nothing special.

Of course he's not. He's not the difference between 6th and winning the league and probably not the difference between 6th and 4th but he will be a solid, dependable player for them. He's got a lot of experience and he's premier league proven. He'll do a much better job of sitting in midfield than Gerrard has been doing as he's got the energy still. That being said Brenton will probably play him at CB or RB.

Surely he's only moving to Liverpool due to assurances about playing time in CM, where he's played much less over the past 3-4 years than he wanted.

If he's guaranteed a centre midfield spot for them all season it's a terrible signing. An inconsistent player and one who I can't see offering much other than energy and trying hard.

Look at the current squad of the best team in the world(Barca) they don't have these so called hard working reliable players. Its an absolute myth that teams need these fillers. Yes, title winning teams have had them, but definitely don't need them. Use the talented kids we have as fillers, sort out a great first 11 and then off we go.

If he's been one of cities best players then they really need to make adjustments in the summer.

Again - I didn't say we should sign him, so that's not relevant.

As far as Barcelona goes, Adriano had plenty of games for them. Keita was no superstar, Song got games before he was loaned out. Mathieu isnt a world beater. These players play a big part. Barca isnt populated by solely world class players in every position. There are other young players who will likely not shine if they move on - as we've had over the years.

Milner is a hard working, versatile player, who's actually done very well for City this year. He can cover a variety of positions and frankly, in the Premier League where the level of intensity is high, that's valuable to a team. hence why i suspect a few sides would want him.

We have lots of players like that in our side. Not superstars, but valuable players nonetheless. Its how you build a team. You need players who are happy to sit on the bench and come in when required. It's not like football manager - going out and buying 22 superstars is not only impossible, it'd be imnpossible to manage.

Good signing for them and I think he would've been a decent signing for anyone on a free. Never going to set the world alight but he's dependable and physically adept, gets stuck in and gets on with the job.

Every team needs a player like Milner, we've had a few over the years, fair play to him if he goes to Liverpool, he obviously just wants to play football.

Ings and Milner. Definitely the duo to get Liverpool back into the CL.

He's better than anyone Liverpool have in midfield so it's a good signing.

They would never join Liverpool for various reasons.
