Nothing concrete so far but a rumour at least starting today that he wants out of Everton. How would people feel if we made a move?

I'd rather Schneiderlin myself but if we couldn't get Gundogan or Schweinsteiger, I wouldn't be massively against it in addition (especially if we could shift some deadwood Everton's way...Evans, Nani etc)

What would you make of going into next season with Herrera, Carrick, McCarthy and Schneiderlin competing for the central midfield berths? Are they a bit too similar, Herrera apart?

I think we need two midfielders to have the right sort of numbers (two for each position). I'd be happy if McCarthy was one of them, I rate him highly.

I'd imagine it's Spurs or the like who is after him though.

I think City will be his destination as they need the quota boost, Mourinho also just said he wants a CM so that might be a possibility as he's a Mourinho type of worker. Personally I wouldn't fancy him here.

Possibly. I wonder if he might have caught van Gaal's eye though as he always seems to play well against us, particularly at Goodison. Same with Schneiderlin at Old Trafford last season, he was excellent for Southampton.

McCarthy is a very good player, wouldn't mind us signing him at all.

Hopefully. He does seem to be his type of player; hard-working, disciplined and with an eye for a pass.

The added bonus is that he strikes me as the type of player that wouldn't have much of an ego and would be content to play the structured game Van Gaal would ask of him.

I would also much prefer Schneiderlin if given the choice, but he's a good player, it does seem strange that he suddenly *wants out* he's always appeared a pretty level headed bloke off the pitch for Wigan and Everton.

He was the best midfielder on the park, by a country mile, when we played Everton this season. Would improve us a lot.

Thats very true but we consistently gave MotM awards to opposition defensive mid's all the way through this season, including the likes of Lee Cattermole

Agreed, I think he must know someone's interested myself. Him and Schneiderlin would be an excellent shield for the back four.

He should be looking at one of the top 4, that's for sure. Would be happy to take him here, but I imagine we would be paying a British Premium for him...

Yeah that has surprised me, I assume he's been alerted to a big clubs interest in him.

I wouldn't want him. I mean i know he is decent and people rate him for a reason but he is just another average player who should be signing for Liverpool instead of us.

It would be quite underwhelming getting him even as a squad player after getting linked with players like Gündogan, Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger.

Gundogan has been fairly poor any time I've seen him play this year, Schweinsteiger is the wrong side of 30.

I like him but fear we'd get rinsed by Everton if we try to get him. I prefer Schneiderlin for a similar price if that was the case.

I'll be surprised if Schneiderlin isn't at United or Arsenal come the start of the season. I don't know which one it will be but hope it's us. Schweinsteiger I think is unlikely and my gut feeling is Gundogan will head elsewhere.

Good player who would fit in well in Van Gaals tactics. He would probably not cost to much and his wage demands would be modest so a fairly low risk signing.

From our previous dealings with Everton what gives you the idea he wouldn't cost much?

Probably - I'd chuck in Evans, Nani or Hernandez to try and get a few quid off. I'd hope at least one of them might be of interest to them.

Both Gündogan and McCarthy are 24 and it's not even debatable which one of them achieved more in football so far. Gündogan might have been poor but I'm sure McCarthy had poor games as well and we know if Gündogan gets back to his old self we've got one of the best midfielder in the world. With McCarthy we would get a decent squad option and that's about that.

With Schweinsteiger we would get a reliable and a world class midfielder(on his days). If LvG bought him he probably believes he can get Schweiny back on top regularly.

If he was to come here he would mostly be taking the squad place of Pereira(I think we'll sign two midfielder this season before Mccarthy). For that reason alone I would be against the transfer.

Also I think he's very decent but not a potential world class talent.

I wouldn't question which one has achieved more -- we all remember how good Gundogan was a couple of years ago. But, I'm not overly happy with transfers which depend on players rediscovering form after devastating, career-threatening injuries.

We should get both if van Gaal insists on playing di Maria on the wing. We are going to have 50 odd games if we make a good run in the champions league and the cups. To combat fatigue, injuries and form, depth in midfield is a key.

What would buying both of them have to do with Di Maria playing on the wing?

He will be one of two options for the position Fellaini is currently occupying on the inside left and third choice behind Schneiderlin and Carrick for the DM spot, both positions he can play adequately well. I penciled in di Maria as the starter with Fellaini as the back up if he were to play in midfield.

Have I missed something? You guys talk like we have the best MF in the world, just because it got decent again. He'd be our best CM with Herrera and on a totally different level to the likes of real squad players like Blind or Perreira(we don't know how accountable Carrick is going to be in the future.)

If it weren't for our sour relationship with Everton, we should be all over this. Cracking player, who'd shine even more in a better team. For me there isn't much difference between him and Schneiderlin tbh. Both would be great additions and I'd be happy with either one of them.

McCarthy as the attacking player in midfield seems out of his ballpark to me. He's a deeper CM who is more about winning the ball than posing any kind of attacking threat.

He is a good player and i think we need some aggressiveness in our midfield, my only question mark would be how much he could contribute attacking wise. We have Herrera as one of the box-to-box players, we need one more who can get us goals/assists.

It's a risk, but a risk i'd sooner take before signing McCarthy. But i see where you are coming from:)

He'll be pretty good box to box in my opinion. He even initiated and ran a few counter attacks when Martinez set them up to counter us in both games at Goodison Park.

I was thinking more about his reputation he is not in the same bracket as player like Verratti, Vidal, Pogba and the likes.

Even then we'd probably still be talking about £30M I think.

I haven't seen much in his game to suggest he'd offer much as a goal threat or creator in truth.
