Has he managed to prove to you's that he has serious credentials in midfield. He has pace and vision, and most importantly a trait that United supporters always love, desire. I think he would work his socks off for the United shirt.

Him and Coleman would be two quality signings for us.

Both would cost a bomb. We can get better CMs for much less if we understand there are other clubs out there than Everton.

I would have been delighted had we gone for him instead of Fellaini. Used to see a bit a Wigan when Cleverley was there and he almost always stood out in midfield. May not be the most gifted technically, but I can see him becoming like how Fletcher was in his prime. A proper box-to-box midfielder who can contribute with the ball and without it as well.

No point in creating a thread in the transfer forum. If we wanted him then last season when he was at Wigan is when we should have gone for him. Not now when his price will be inflated.

Would have obviously been a better signing than Fellaini, but Everton would use that logic to demand as much or more for McCarthy. And he's clearly not worth that.

We'd be more likely to take his partner Barry on a free

But isn't that United all over. Example, why did we wait to buy Ferdinand? - perhaps he developed at Leeds but it cost us a packet more than if we'd gone in while he was at West Ham. Same can be said for so many players, brought in perhaps, when the timing was right, rather than when the price was right?

I think the Palace result, where he was rested, proves his importance to Everton & that Martinez is not, infallible.

I wouldn't mind this kind of punt, proven Prem player alongside a classy European player, or two. Would we get him - not so sure. Clubs like Everton & Southampton have greater financial security these days & don't need to sell.

He is at least twice the player Fellaini is. And even then, he isn't a top bracket player.

Shows how much of a monumental waste of money Fellaini was. And feck off with your 'do you have to mention Fellaini in every thread' shite before anyone starts!

I am not sure that any of the top four sides will be moving for him in the next couple of years. He would have been well worth what Everton paid Wigan for him but that ship has sailed now. I am not convinced that he is quite as good as the CAF Irish contingent believe. Coleman on the other hand: I think that any top four side would take him in a heartbeat.

Maybe our continual focus on how much players cost isn't the important issue - perhaps how players fit in and their ability is more important than not paying over the odds.

Why do we ultimately care how much Fellaini cost, it's not our money? Regardless of the price, he was never the right player for us, and he'd be a let down even if he cost £2m.

Everton done brilliant business selling Fellaini to us and getting in McCarthy, with plenty of cash left over.

He has done a great job for Everton this season and has been one of the best CM's around. He does his job really well, which is to sit deep and break-up play, but he also has a brilliant engine and is a good passer.

During the summer, I said on numerous occasions that we should sign him if was a choice between Cabaye, himself and Fellaini. Unfortunately, Moyes chose Fellaini. It's odd though, he had been linked with Everton while Moyes was still in charge so obviously Moyes rated him. Maybe he thought he wouldn't be good enough for us, which if it was the case, was a terrible call.

Plenty on here had called him being a better player than Cleverley, but true to the typical form of the Caf, were laughed off. Guess he has proven that he is the better player.

It still seems some on here can't appreciate what he brings to Everton and appreciate the role he plays, but I assume that those people haven't watched him much. Go on to any Everton forum and you will see their fans gushing about him. He has been an absolute bargain and a brilliant piece of business from Everton.

He's a midfielder who actually knows where he's supposed to stand on the pitch - Unlike Fellaini
Has the legs to move up and down the pitch - Unlike Carrick
And actually has the balls/confidence to use the ball properly - Unlike Cleverley

He's not even at the higher level of midfielders, but he'd be our best midfielder if we signed him right now.
Very mature player, and has been for years. Would probably get into Spurs' team and Arsenal's (ahead of Arteta) too.

Sky Sports understands that Everton midfielder James McCarthy has emerged as one of Manchester United's top transfer targets this summer.

The Republic of Ireland international only moved to Goodison Park on deadline day on September 2 last year when he followed Roberto Martinez from Wigan.

He played a starring role in his debut campaign as Everton claimed fifth place in the Premier League to secure qualification for the Europa League.

McCarthy's role in Everton's terrific season has not gone unnoticed and, although Louis van Gaal is being linked with a string of foreign signings as an overhaul of United's squad is widely anticipated, one of his key signings could be from a North-West rival.

Everton are keen to open talks with the 23-year-old over a new deal, but news that United could be ready to make a move may scupper that idea.

Sources have confirmed to Sky Sports that United may even try to offer Tom Cleverley in exchange as Martinez is known to be fan of the England midfielder and it appears he could be one of a number of Old Trafford regulars allowed to leave this summer.

Yes please.

A straight swap with Everton former legend Fellaini? :p

Seriously, these are the sort of players we can get. Its a shame that we will be fleeced by Everton especially since we could have easily got the guy for 15m.

Sigh, it almost depresses me to see us linked with players like McCarthy and Strootman now, players who we could've easily obtained before for a fraction of the price. What the f*ck were our previous managers smoking when it comes to our midfield?

I'd take him, mind. Could easily see a Cleverley/Fellaini swap deal taking place.

Not sure if he's the sort of player who just looks good in Martinez system? Ala Cleverley.

That's what happens when a club employ a mid EPL table level manager + it gets too cocky. Years of 'no one can replace Paul Scholes' mentality has left us in this sorry state.

Martinez did brilliantly to sell Fellaini to us for £27m and then spend half of that on McCarthy. A great signing, as I thought he would be. Does the simple things well.

With Cina on this one, just no idea why we didn't purchase him instead of Fellaini - a better CM for much cheaper. Hopefully they'll take Fellaini back from us.

It was a missed opportunity for sure. Crazy really when you look at Fellaini and McCarthy's respective seasons.

feck, I read the tweet from SkySports and read Manchester City, thinking why the hell do they want him?

From Kroos and Fabregase to James McCarthy, it's just a little underwhelming.

Isn't Sky Sports not-Italy a relatively reliable source? They're not ones to pluck something like this out of their arses, are they?

Jesus wept, we are getting nowhere with this signing. He's a good player but we need top class players, of which he really isn't.

Certainly not going to fix all our problems but If you believe that we're in for a lot of signings this summer he would be a great addition along with the top tier signings we're hoping for.

What on earth would van gaal know about him? Not enough to make him one of our biggest targets surely.

I don't rate him as highly as most of you do.

This seems to have been been leaked by McCarthy's agent to get himself a new deal.

Frankly the likes of Fellaini, Cleverley, Fletcher and Anderson are barely mid-table standard.

Agree with this. Plus, as he's just signed for Everton I can't see them being willing to sell him to us either unless we massively overpay.

Also, has Louis Van Gaal has been scouting Everton over the past year? If not, who is the driving force behind this link/move?

Very well could be a case of this.

Yeah. We have gone from looking at 9/10 midfielders to looking at a 7/10? It all depends on the price. I assume that Everton will want to make a nice profit on this player so what 20m?

This guy isn't even at the level of an Arteta. He is the kind of player that we would be happy to see a team like Liverpool sign as it would be an indication of them not being able to mix it at the top level anymore.

Even in the article it says this. I think this is leaked by an agent.

What are you smoking? Ferguson went after Strootman a couple of years back if the reports at the time were to be believed.

If this turns out to be yet another bullshit story Sky will have lost all credibility for me. Them and their fecking "sky sources"

Yeah exactly. Though the article is saying that we may use Cleverley as part of the deal. Martinez apparently a big fan, not sure he's that big a fan he'd get him but lose McCarthy though.
