James Maddison | Spurs

I guess I am part of the minority then. I was happy when Kane left because I didn't want them on the same team. When he is fit he has always been a very good player. He is one of the 10's I wanted before we got Bruno.
Personally I fully expected him to be this good at Spurs. My doubts lay in Spurs as a team matching it.
I fully expected both Bissouma and Maddison to be this good. It's criminal that we don't take punts like this as a club.
Fair play. Hadn't paid attention to him for an age, so had no opinion on his move. He now looks like an absolute steal.

He's so slick with what he does, and Son absolutely loves it, so too the midfield; they're pinging passes between themselves seamlessly.

Didn't Mount get voted players´ player of the year twice, including the CL winning year, by his Chelsea mates, and featured regularly on the England side? How does one gets so far with poor general play?
Because football is a team sport, and he was carried by much better players. Same reason people used to argue with me about why Donny was a bad signing with people using the "he was the 10 for a good Ajax side who lit up Europe so surely he's a good footballer".

If you actually watch their games, it is clear that they benefit greatly from having midfielders like Kovacic (for Mount) or de Jong (for Donny) carry the midfield with their press resistance.

That's what separates Mount and Maddison apart. Mount is very weak and poor under pressure whereas Maddison is press resistant.

Seemed like a streaky player for me at Leicester. Looks good for Spurs so far this season, but he had patches like this over there too. He is a quality player but I have wondered if his mind is always in it.

Out until January.

Surprised how good he has slotted in at Spurs thought not surprised he has had an injury setback. He would've been out for months if it were United knowing our luck.

Only fair to bump this when he’s not playing well when it was Maddison > Bruno after a few weeks of good form

Very definition of a purple patch player. I can never feel too dismayed at missing out on Maddison regardless of his form. We shouldn’t have signed amount but that doesn’t mean we should have signed Maddison.

To think we could have brought Maddison for 2/3 what Mount cost.
Actually really like Maddison and obviously Mount's fitness has been a disaster, but Maddison had been genuinely horrific for almost a year. Today was one of his first decent matches since his injury last fall, and his decline in form was a big reason Spurs collapsed in the second half of last season.

Think that performance should relaunch his England career. At the least he should be coming off the bench for Bellingham

Was actually quite quick on that first goal running in behind Stones and Walker who both paid little attention

Absolutely, but he is not English, so will not be spoken about too much.

Kuluveski's close ball control is exquisite, reminds me of Pires back in the day at Arsenal who played wide but wasn't quick at all but ball was glued to his feet when dribbling.

At the time we bought Mount, Maddison had just come off a 19 G+A contribution in the league alone playing for a relegation Leicester. He started brilliantly for Tottenham the following season until his injury, and this season he already has 5 goals and 3 assists in 12 games.

Genuinely horrific.. at what point?

You mention Maddison picking up an injury last season so it's worth also adding that this has been a repeated pattern for him throughout his career. Going into every season, Leicester and Spurs fans have had to temper their expectations knowing that they'll likely be without Maddison for approximately a third of the season. Both Maddison and Mount are injury-prone players that United should have avoided signing. The only difference being that Mount's injury issues started in the 22/23 season, whereas Maddison has always suffered from this.

His form tends to be a lot better in the first half of seasons as well. Its usual for him to start the season on fire and then just being good in the 2nd half of the season, not among the best attackers in the league

Good player, but nowhere near as good as some (especially himself) think he is.

Plays well for a game or 2 then goes missing for a month - rinse and repeat

I'm not too sure of Maddison's injury records, but fbref says he has 30+ appearances in each PL season, excluding the last one with Tottenham. That seems fairly decent to me. I agree that we shouldn't have bought Mount either, but I'm just saying that if we should have chosen one of them, it would have to be Maddison in my opinion. I don't think either of them are good enough to be starters, but they are both very good squad players.

He reached 30 appearances the season before last due to the anomaly that was a winter World Cup. He got injured for Leicester a week before the tournament started, which meant he was unavailable for selection for club and country for the following couple of months.

If you look at the number of days he misses through injury, it would send alarm bells ringing if we were on the verge of signing a player like that. Injury-prone players on 170k a week are not useful squad options.

Pretty funny him giving it the big one... he scored a tap-in after our keeper literally gifted him an open goal.

His team are still in 12th and they beat the shittest United team ever. Well done

Maddison is a good example re the failings of our recent transfers

Signed for 40M
The same summer we sign Mount for 55M

In the last 3.5 years (league)

Maddison has 35 goals and 36 assists
Mount has 15 goals and 15 assists

Mount is also on 80k a week more!!

Signing players who would go on to get injured is poor planning, that's for sure.

Yeah reminded me of Slabhead celebrating that goal against some piss poor international team. It proved nothing, and celebrating like it was some career highlight just confirms the original criticism.

I agree. It was crazy to consider him given the last season he had at Chelsea there were a few injuries as well.

To add, that 80k wage difference across a 5 yr contract is 20.8M

Maddison has been decent for Spurs but he's not good enough for what Manchester United aspire to be. He's also 29 this year.

Norwich, Leicester and then Spurs with a handful of England caps along the way, that's about right for James Maddison level talent.

Hindsight is 20/20 with regards to Mount's injuries. He's just turned 26 last month so has plenty of time.

Well he certainly shut Roy up, didn't he? I'll bet Keano is feeling pretty foolish this morning, watching Madison slam home that beauty yesterday.

We shouldn't have signed Maddison or Mount. Spurs and Leicester fans have had to go into every season knowing that Maddison will miss a third of the season through injury. The difference between the two players in the 2023 summer window was that there was more evidence of Maddison being an injury-prone player.
