James Garner

This is why I'd send him back to Forest again, he's at a club and with a manager where we know he'll get games and at this stage that's more important than just sending him to the highest placed club who wants him
Agreed, playing is way more valauble than sitting on the bench somewhere.

The championship isn't that far off now anyway, plenty of clubs play decent football there now.

I remember that well. He was sent there to show his professionalism and apparently the Preston coaches were very impressed; always on time, trained hard and had a great attitude. Plus he scored a couple of bangers

Its incredible how excited you could get reading a text box in the corner of a magazine, or an update on teletext. Nowadays there's an instant clip of everything on social media within seconds of it happening. Not sure the kids of the current decade can understand the excitement of getting your change together to go by the latest magazine in the hopes of finding out something about someone on loan, who might not even be featured in the magazine for months!

The good thing about Garner is that we get weekly footage of him and he seems to be excelling. Honestly not sure what Watford was thinking, new manager or not. The reserves can be deceiving but this kid always looked like he had it.

PS) What even happened to Shoot and Match? I think I discovered United were looking at Andy Cole and Stan Collymore in those magazines. At the time I actually thought Collymore would be the better signing.:lol::lol:

Agree completely. Still not sure he's quite at premier League level yet, but he's clearly getting better and better under Hughton (who is a manager I think is Premier League level himself), why would we not send him back to Forest again and get a full pre season there etc? That said if a Premier League side offered him match experience it would be hard for us (and Garner) to turn it down, but another championship side may just turn into another Watford situation. Nottingham Forest should 100% be our first choice if it's them or (insert championship team).

Always used to see the name "Terry Cooke" in the United fanzines so it was very exciting when he scored on his debut, shame it didn't work out for him

I'm pretty sure Cooke was a Championship Manager 98 legend as well. Am I thinking about the right version of Championship Manager? F-k knows. That game made me think Nevland was going to be the next Solskajer!

Think physically, he isn't ready to play at United. Once he came back here, he'll be like 4th choice CAM?

Realistically he should be aiming at Matic's spot, but maybe another season of good loan at Forest is the better choice for him.

He's running Forest's midfield, but Forest are currently an average Championship outfit so let's not get too carried away.

I see & listen to a lot of Forest being local, his main strength is his passing between the lines which is something to behold. His first inclination is always forward. The big test was the physicality of it all & he's held his own here completely. I would send him back to Forest next season & let him dominate, Forest will push for promotion next season under Hughton.

I think he will be a top player, for a 20 year old to be playing so well for a bang-average Championship in CM is not easy at all.

I don't know what some posters expect but I think if you compare his level now to Carrick at 20, they won't be all that far apart at all

Spice Boy went to the wrong club

For sure, he's always had bags of talent. My only concern, like with many young, talented players, was how he'd adapt to the men's game but he seems to be handling the Championship physicality fine. A loan to a lower half PL club next season could be a good next step for him.

yeah I agree.

The coaches and Ole have a big decision to make this summer for the young lad regarding the next step..

Would love him to get a loan to a sub topper in Holland. Vitesse, Herrenveen, or even higher AZ or Feyenoord. Would help his technique and ability to handle pressing

Looks fantastic, he didnt show any of this in his few appearances for the 1st team. Still hopeful he has the level to play for Manchester United.
That was a year and something ago, players develop a lot physically, not just their frame but overal running power and stamina. Not mentioning mentality which can really change nay time during young years. Some players just lose a lot of coinfedence once they find out how much faster and stronger the mens football is. With this loan Garner knows he turned that corner. So let´s hope he improves even further. 99% people here judge him from the very shortened and selected highlights by the editor. Definitely there are mistakes not showned which make him much more ready than he is. We should be way more patient with him than with other players we judged too early to make the step up.

Yup we dont want the same situation that happened with Tuanzebe. I cant see Ole picking him ahead of McFred, and it's no good having Garner sitting on the bench not playing.

We could replace Matic in the squad with Garner. Matic's legs have gone.

Really hope that his confidence grows to such a level whereby once he’s ready to play for us again he shows that incisive passing ability.
There’s just something about him that gets me excited. Doesn’t seem to be fazed and that could add a lot of control to our midfield.

You weren't the only one. Collymore looked awesome on his day (usually against us). I remember that 1 all draw with Forest, at the beginning of 94-95, he looked dangerous every time he got the ball, and a few games for Liverpool as well (the 0-2 in 96 comes to mind). Not sure why he was so invisible for so many games.

He was a good footballer but obviously a real cnut of a man if he has to beat up a woman ( calling him a man was probably pushing it a bit)

but Matic isnt playing either, and that's the point. Do you think young players like Garner want to just be in a squad and not play. Same with Tuanzebe, how is that good for their devleopment. They want to be playing games at that age and learn, and rightly so.

Bang on. A loan with the ability to recall seems to be the answer for both of these lads.

He certainly seems to have the tools required to play in our first team one day.
I just hope he has his head screwed on and his feet on the ground, they are just as important at talent.

A season or so more on loan, somewhere he will play many games & then if he is still progressing he will get a shot in our midfield for sure.

A balanced midfielder.

They do indeed and we don't have a DM who should stand in his way of starting 12-15 league games for us. Matic has started 10 so far, so if Garner does better as expected he could easily get another 5 with Fred still being rotated with him and being considered the senior man for the bigger games.

Thats plenty of football for Garner who has had 14 starts in the championship all together this season. If we loaned him to another premier league team its unlikely he'd get many more starts than that and he might be in a team thats sitting 9 men behind the ball all game and not getting involved enough.

Matic has made 29 appearances this season, with the vast majority of them being starts.

Let's not pretend Fred/McTominay are world class competition for him for minutes either.

Tuanzebe hasn't been great in most of his appearances, and has been injured a lot. It's not the same situation.

You can't expect a player to develop with infrequent game time. Ole has shown he won't play squad players into form to give them a chance so it'd be sink or swim in a random selection of games and substitute appearances.

A loan makes far more sense. If he's not too arrogant he'll realise that.

Again, he's played 28 games in the championship from 2 loans. Dont be expecting him to play 25 games on loan to a premier league team and certainly not in one that isnt sitting back and defending most of the game because they're fighting to survive relegation. He wasnt starting at Watford, plenty of other better clubs than Watford rate their own midfielders and would want him as backup not starting every game.

What about loaning him to Brighton, as part of a deal to get Bissouma? Brighton plays great football. And a coach like Graham Potter could really help Garner develop, I think. Really rate Potter. Plus he'd be getting Premier League experience and helping to defeat our rivals.

It's a very simple observation, but his crossfield passes are genuinely Scholes-like. He makes it look effortless.

Jamal Musiala is playing in big games for Bayern. Jude Bellingham is doing same. Illaix Moriba and Pedri are playing games for Barça. United fans however want an impressive 20 year old to spend more years on loan cos he’s not "ready" to play in a team whose midfield is mostly made up of Scott Mctominay, Fred and an almost past it Matic. Sigh...

We have a 19 year old starting already. It’s not a race. Players grow at their own rate, nothing is linear.

Aside: It’s also funny that Dortmund and Barcelona are having their worst seasons in a long while, starting all these wonderkids.

Ilaix Moriba has started 1 game, btw.

Jude Bellingham is starting for Bayern? No wonder they went out of the CL - he was completely invisible in that game at least. (Apologies for the bad joke).

I think the grass looks greener when you mention players like Moriba for Bayern and not players like Diallo and Shoretire for United.

We gave Garner a CL debut vs PSG at 17 as I recall. Bellingham was acclaimed the most talented 17 year old in the country and is already with England, and Dortmund has bent over to get him. They are 5th/6th in the bundesliga with him playing regularily. Garner is nowhere near the NT at 20, he is doing good stuff in the Championship like Bellingham did at 16. Maybe he is ready to play steadily for a team fighting for 5th/6th place in the PL. Do you want that? Maybe he can be squad player at a team fighting to close the gap to 1st? Is that best for his development, and United long term? Hard to say.

exactly

Apparently given the ball away to go 1-0 down and put Derby in an awful position.

I suppose he did say that his idol was Gerrard growing up!
