What a goal that is
Yeah I tend to agree, just that you said that he was currently not as good as McFred so I assumed it would be a waste of time. You’ve got to give him a chance at this level to show what he can do.
Different players but Mason Mount after a good loan in the Championship was ready and just needed game time. People doubted him a bit at the start but he’s brilliant now and walks into most sides in the league.
Im not saying Garner will do the same. But he deserves a chance. It’s not like McFred is insurmountable competition for him. If anything, his style of play would compliment both.
Well, Mount is an attacking midfielder, Garner is a defensive one, not sure what goals and assists have to do with it. Garner's on 4 by the way, which is quite a nice number for a DM. He's probably a worse player than Mount was at Derby, but surely goals shouldn't be an indication of that?where the the two in comparison to their development? Wasn’t Mount a standout player at Derby - although I’d not watched him. Just looked up his stats, and 11 goals and 6 assists for a team getting to the playoffs.
I’ve not watched Garner either, bar the off highlight, but surely he’s not near that level.
Henderson came up to PL with Sheffield while performing admirably (reportedly) and Lingard is not a developing youngster as portrayed in the punchline.Henderson? Lingard?

Different positions though. Mount was further up the pitch and played regularly. If Garner had played the full season at Forest rather than stuck at Watford for the first 3/4 months then we are probably looking at comparable/scalable statistical output.
The most important thing is that he is trending at the same kind of level. He will get a chance during Pre-Season, it will be up to him to take it.
forget about the stats. Mount was being called up by England, are they anywhere near the same level?

Think there’s a rule against playing for 3 teams in one seasonWill he be eligible for us for last couple of games against Fulham and Wolves? Might be a good chance to have a quick look while we are resting the others
Garner isn't near the England squad right now no. But Mount shouldn't have been at the time he was called up either.
Mount would be a better player in a world where it is possible to make a direct comparison. But I don't think there is as much in it as you may do.
England call ups mean very little tbh. But his performances have been very good ever sice he moved to Forest, according to their own fans.

Mount was playing as no.10 at Derby, Garner is a DM at Forest with 4 goals and 4 times MOTM. You can't compare their stats.where the the two in comparison to their development? That's like comparing the stats of Fernandes and Rice. They play completely different roles.where the the two in comparison to their development? how is his work rate? I think it probably more important than superb physicality in modern games.I've watched quite a few Forest matches since he moved there and he's looked fantastic when played as a defensive mid. His passing range is exceptional for the Championship and his physicality has much improved over his time at Watford.
I watched the Forest v Wednesday match last week and he seemed to be playing further forward and wasn't so involved.
He was Forest's dead ball taker too and his corners and free kicks have been excellent, even scoring direct from a free kick near the touchline. You only have to look at the Forest forums to see how much of a success this loan has been.
His physicality was my main worry, but a season in the Championship seems to have sorted that out.

They’re the only two players to ever get a Championship loan apparentlyWhat's with all the comparisons with Mount? Weird.
Apologies I haven't read the whole thread.bloody hell. For the 5th or 6th time - I’m not trying to compare their stats. Mounts stats and more importantly that he got called up for ENGLAND whilst at Derby point to a player further on in his development. That’s what I’ve been asking.
And again, I didn’t bring up the comparison between the two.
Apologies I haven't read the whole thread.
For what it's worth, I also think it's fairly obvious Mount was better for Derby than Garner has been so far, that's why I'd like to see him have 1 more season on loan.
I wouldn't think so. Typically I think DMs really start coming into their own at around 22/23, it's a really difficult position which requires lots of experience. Thankfully Forest actually played him in that role, unlike at Watford where they bizzarely had him playing as an 8.don’t worry! My question was is he ready for the first team squad? On the face of it (and having watched very little of him), I’d suggest no.
we can’t completely dismiss an England call up - it does mean a player is of a certain standard. It doesn’t guarantee anything, but it is a barometer
Good to hear he’s well though of - do they think he can make the step up?
More of a Carrick than a Fred certainly.how is his work rate? I think it probably more important than superb physicality in modern games.
We absolutely can, there are plenty of good players who don't get called up and some cloggers who stink up the place because they are the managers favourites. It also depends on the strength of the NT, and England have a fair few options.
It is a poor barometer, the only thing that matters is if he is ready to step up and play for us. As far as Garner is concerned, he seems to have no problem dealing with the physicality of the championship, so he should be fine. The question is will he benefit more from another loan, at Forest even and play a full season, or should he stay with us. It all depends on the transfers I guess, both in and out.
nothing is perfect when we have a game of opinions. Ours differ, and I disagree. So I’ll leave it there.
Both are good.More of a Carrick than a Fred certainly.
Good positional sense to see the dangers and block, then dictate with a searching pass.
Which is good in a DM?
This is not an opinion, just a fact. Trying to use NT as some barometer to judge a player is not a good metric. Players like Grealish and Shaw did not get in the NT until recently despite their performances, and some like Dier usually are picked even though they have been poor.
of course it’s an an opinion. Is not a FACT. It’s the opinion of the manager in charge. When it comes to deciding whether a player plays or not for any team it’s the opinion of the manager.
How is he coping with the physical aspects of Championship football??
As I said I disagree, clearly they do. Please let’s leave it.I am not talking about the manager's decision making. The fact that they are opinions mean that it is a fact that NT placements have very little value on rating and judging a player.
