Sorry, I should have said how do they fecking verify this? I could say the players were surprised, Rashford and Mengi told me yesterday actually

Are you new to journalism? Especially sports journalism?

If you want to do some critical thinking, you can see who the journalist is who wrote that article and then see if they’ve published any on record quotes from United players in over the last 24 hours.

Be interesting to see if this coincides with what Fabrizio puts out later on. I think we're at the point where we'll know one way or another over the next couple of days, and it's starting to look like this one is proving too hard to put together given the current climate/payment demands beyond the overall transfer fee.

Real pity if it doesn't materialise. Hard to see us finishing above Chelsea, City or Pool without adding quality and depth to what we've got. First XI can compete, but we've arguably got the worst squad depth out of the "top" 6.

In Fab's update he said that the player wasn't the issue so it's only going to be the fee Dortmund demand that will stop the deal. I think we'll pay up eventually anyway for what it's worth.

More importantly, who could we possibly get as an alternative? The likes of Douglas Costa doesn't fill me with joy. Ousmane Dembele is injury prone.

Maybe a more under the radar option? Federico Chiesa? Viktor Tsyhankov?

I don't think I can handle watching Dan James, Jesse Lingard or Juan Mata stink up our right-wing again if one of the front three is tired/injured?

This is probably what's driving Dortmund's demands. There is nobody remotely close to Sancho's talent and potential available in the market. I'd rather we spent the money elsewhere than fork out on a guaranteed dud for the right wing.

Completely agree with the point on squad depth, which is crazy considering not all that long ago we could basically put out two squads that could both have arguably won silverware. Demonstrates the slide that the club have been on.

Okay, here's another question since I need to absolutely spell it out. What person, regardless of whether the journalist in question is making this up, even believes that players would openly talk to journalists about transfers when on international duty? It's nonsense and not a question of how journalism works. I know how it works. I'm questioning what person would believe that crap.

That’s the nature of off the record journalism, you never know if it’s true or not so it’s futile claiming you believe it 100% or dispute it 100%. In this case I absolutely believe it’s possible. Journalists build relationship with players all the time and it’s a two way street, they can leak a bit of info and in return they get favourable coverage at times that suits them, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if there was a casual conversation during an interview like:

Journo: Any news on Sancho, off the record of course...
Player: Nah we find out about the same time as you with transfers.
Journo: No clues? Not heard anything from Jadon or the coaches?
Player: Nah not really, I’m surprised we haven’t signed him yet though, everyone knows we are in for him and he wants to come, I don’t know what the hold up is though.

Something as benign as that can then make a headline “United players are privately surprised that Sancho has not yet signed for United”.

This one is very dead.
Ye it looks like that. Taken too long, nothing concrete coming out. I think we were interested, we did have some discussions with the player and his club, but we couldnt come to an agreement on the price, or how the price would be paid.

Romano will just recycle the info (not that there is much more for him to do)... Personals agreed, United need to pay what Dortmund want.

This one is very dead.
It's not dead until United say it's dead.

Don't see why they would keep saying Sancho is the number 1 target over and over unless they were serious.

"Man Utd confident [vague, unverifiable statement], please give 3000 retweets" that basically covers every single hot update.

Hypothetically, let's say Dortmund decided to sell him to United at the last minute, where do you think you would stand in terms of the team? Would it create a massive hole or you already see someone stepping up to fill the void in case he leaves?

I'm not conspiring to kidnap but.... does anyone have a black bag I can borrow? I have plans to steal a certain player with a name beginning with S and ending with O from a certain German club. This hostage situation has gone on long enough and I'm willing to take one for the team

Hope you’re not planning to pin it on Ole

Don’t get fooled into bagging his shit double who’s been playing for England lately

This has all the hallmarks of a classic Caf muppet heartbreak. There just isn’t enough sustaining it same as Sneijder and Vidal. A deal could still happen but all we have are these aggregator accounts like UtdReport trying to keep it alive and the same story that was about literally 5 weeks ago doing the rounds “agent fees, wages etc.”

Starting to think we’re going to buy someone out the blue.

Too quiet from us, and too little movement on other players for this to be dead yet.

You're planning to kidnap Werder Bremen's second choice goalkeeper Stefanos Kapino? Why ever would you want to do that, and why are you telling us this in the Sancho thread?

It isn't though is it...

He tweets news when he has it - It's not his fault that there are no new developments on this one.

Funny the news Sancho signed an extension last season slipped him by then isn't it?

Didn't have a scooby about VDB either until Ajax coach spoke out. Then he start tweeting non stop about the deal like he knew all along.

Romano has you all dancing his merry dance my friend.

I so want this transfer to happen.
That said, it's becoming more and more obvious that this season is going to be an utter shambles from start to finish, with all teams a lot poorer at the end of it than they are now. I can understand United's reluctance to spend the money, but really don't understand why Dortmund aren't biting our hand off yet if we've made a decent offer. I think it's a massive gamble if Dortmund hold our for a better price next Summer.

Where does he claim to know about every transfer?

He tweets what he knows. Just because he doesn't hear everything doesn't mean he's never correct of anything?

Knowing EVERYTHING would just be impossible.
