Finally the reality is sinking in most fans that this deal may not happen.

I'm still thinking it'll happen, but it's got a little while to go yet.

We've had no brief or the sorts that it's off, and United are always keen to do that to put a stop to things. We've actually had the contrary here, United are briefing that we're still very much in for him and confident in a deal. Whether it happens or not remains to be seen.

Nope, not having that.
Still happening

I love the positive vibes. I hope it happens but unfortunately as the season gets closer, my hopes are fading away.

This will be Berba, up in that private room on SSN on deadline day type of signing I think.

By whom? The Glazers?

Don't be silly, Woody is a Liverpool employee.

While I'm not a fan off how Woodward has handled the football side of things as it generally been a mess since he took over. But saying he should be fired, for not signing up to pay the largest fee ever paid by a premier league club for a player, in the middle of a global pandemic, when the club's debt is rising sharply when we are likely to have lost 100 + million from ticket sales by the time fans are allowed back in the stadium(not to mention merchandise, overseas tour deals, catering on matchday sales .....) and at the start of what is likely going to be the largest global economic crisis in history (which will likely affect everything from ticket sales to sponsorship deals to merchandise sales) seems a bit daft.

That's the PR Woody will be going with, yes. And he may get away with it if everyone bought it the way you do.

Spurs have spent ~50m, City are on ~30m with Koulibaly yet to come, Leeds have spent ~60m, Everton ~45m and more to come, Chelsea have spent ~150m already (they signed Kovacic and Pulisic from last year's budget before you give me a transfer ban excuse).

All of them are affected by similar constraints, all of them rake in less revenue than United and most of them have a higher transfer fee to income ratio this season than United do.

Ambitious clubs take the initiative when they see an opportunity to get ahead. I think Ole would rather have Sancho now if it means a quiet window next summer, because this opportunity to sign a top top player doesn't usually present itself to modern day United (since SAF, Pogba is the only world class signing we made where we had to compete with other clubs for a signature).

You can listen to excuses and be content that we let another golden chance to stay at the top slip away or you can hold people accountable to their failures to make resources translate to success.

If this deal was dead then wouldn't there be more noise about our backup options / briefing that we've walked away etc?

Think this is where it's tricky for the club. There are no backups. Willian was the only real option, but even he would have been a massive compromise and demanded huge wages.

It's Sancho or broke. It's why Dortmund won't budge, and could still refuse to sell now even if we meet their price due to where we are in the window.

Pulisic was bought in the January transfer window before the ban was announced. They also sold Hazard for near to 140 million and Morata for 50 million. The transfer ban excuse holds water.

He doesnt know a thing luckily.
Even though I love Neville as a pundit, I was surprised that he didn’t seem to really have a clue about Utd’s transfers and who we’re going for at the moment. In the interview he wasn’t really sure what the situation was with Reguilon and at one point misunderstood that we’d actually signed him already. I guess he doesn’t follow the transfer news like us muppets!

Well the rumored alternative from a few weeks back, Brooks, might be heading to Leicester soon.

Also it's been curious to see journo's shoehorning the fact that the club is still working on Sancho whenever they report on another rumored target or in VDB's case, another signing.

From the outside looking in, it doesn't seem like the club itself believes it's dead as much as the pessimists seem certain that it is.

And we got only Fred and Grant the window before, then sold Lukaku to fund Maguire, and have freed up Sanchez' wages. Over the last three seasons, our net spend is less than 50m higher than Chelsea's, while our revenue has definitely been much higher.

I just refuse to believe we have NO means left of making Sancho happen at all, in a situation where we should have been taking any means of making it work, including ones which result in no incomings next summer. This is a question of how much you want it, and my beef is that we clearly don't want it enough which indicates a lack of ambition and/or competence.

Gary needs to shut his feckin mouth if you ask me.

Prime example of him knowing feck all about a situation and therefore only adding pressure to it by commenting on it in the press.

The club haven’t made a statement on the signing either way, so why he thinks he can talk on our behalf I don’t know.
The days of agreeing with Neville's opinion went a long time ago.

Perhaps the club feel they'd rather go with Mason on the right if they can't get Sancho. Who else really is available? they might go back in for Sancho in January instead.

G Neville has been coming out with some bullshit recently I have to admit. He was saying that most Utd fans aren’t that desperate to sign Sancho (not true!). He said we’d be better off not going for Sancho and going for Kane instead.

I’ve never heard such an absurd and lazy comment. Does he really think we can just knock on Levy’s door and get Kane for a reasonable price? Absolutely no chance Spurs would sell him for anything reasonable. You would be looking at paying £200M to even test Spurs resolve. Yet he’s telling us to abandon getting a £108m player and go for Kane instead. That’s just a pointless contribution to an interview.

This Saga is shite. Everyday I check this thread and end up scrolling through 5 pages worth of posts and not a single tweet to be found with any sort of news. I just want this put to bed now, either sign him or just walk away. Gary Neville is right it’s just dragging on too long at this point.

Yes, like Chelsea had no idea that the ban was coming? They got a ban in Feb 2019 and signed Pulisic in Jan 2019 having known that Hazard was leaving.. yeah right they didnt know.

The transfer ban doesn't hold any water.

Did Spurs spend £200m after they went a season without spending
Does that mean liverpool will spend £300m next summer? Because they havent spent in 3 years?

It doesn't work like that.

There was Grealish, but we put a stop to that very early on by briefing that we've cooled interest and see Sancho as our primary target.
The thing is, Dortmund won't refuse €120M regardless of what they say to the press. United know that. They could offer €120M on the last day of the window and Dortmund would very likely accept, so it's my guess thats why we're not rushing. We are looking at a way to structure the payments that benefit both parties, and as of yet, we've not found that happy medium. If the deal was off, you can except United to go for Grealish very quickly as it does look like he was our backup option

Ok let’s say they knew the transfer ban was coming their sale of Morata covers the cost of Pulisic and they spent around 40 mill on Kovacic. That leaves them with, and let’s be conservative, 80 million left over from Hazard’s sale. Chelsea are Chelsea, they aren’t Spurs or Liverpool who don’t seem to have that much money regardless of revenue. Chelsea are a rich club. So let’s give them again a conservative transfer budget of 60 million for last summer. That then amounts to 140 million form sales and last summer’s budget PLUS this summers budget.

I’m missing out other sales they have made and am perhaps being conservative in my estimates but they were uniquely placed out of all of the clubs in England to spend an absolute tonne this summer.

I hope you're right, but I always thought it was being reported that we were interested in Grealish in addition to Sancho, and that we ended up going with Donny due to Villa's demands for Grealish.

There's a chance that we've set aside the funds for this deal and are holding off on firing in order to get other players in at a good price, but I'm not altogether convinced. I think Ole would have wanted Sancho around the squad asap, although it would be in character for us to move later in the window for him. Once these internationals are over and done with I'm sure we'll know one way or another. It's just disheartening when there was so much promise this could happen as the season was coming to an end, and it's just totally gone dead since then.

We need to get a move on with this deal if it’s going ahead, I don’t really want us signing someone after we’ve played a couple of league games. I don’t get why we’re not just offering 70m upfront with the rest coming as instalments, I’ve heard that they’ll accept 70m as the minimum to pay upfront.

This reminds me of the 2011 Sneijder saga. At the start of the Summer the link creates a massive association between us and the player and it appears we’re the only club interested. As the Summer goes by though there is actually feck all concrete indicating a deal will get done. Just the same “we want him” and “they want x money” an association every big club will have with every quality player pretty much.

Nevertheless I do think as we panic a little more as the window goes on this may happen, purely because it’s Dortmund who we know will sell to anyone who coughs up.

I do like how websites such as transfermarkt is used to publish numbers when they do not represent the true cost. The fee was £88m plus add ons whilst the website reports it as £144m

https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-chelsea/alletransfers/verein/631

Whereas Havertz is £72m whilst its £72m with add ons.

Instead of doing it that way, the easiest way to make sense is:

Hazard + Morata = £140m
Ziyech + Pulisic = £98m leaves £42m

They bought Ziyech with £42m which covers more or less brings it to 0

This summer they have spent £150m in a Covid market.

I do agree that Chelsea should not be looked at because their owner has ambition.

I agree with that, it would make sense to get him in ASAP, but as you said, it could be that we're wanting to make Sancho the last signing, as if we fire off €120M on on player right away, other clubs will see that we have cash and hike the price for their players knowing we have the money. Chances are we have the cash to pay outright if we want too, but as you say, we're looking to get in other players at good prices if we can, and we want to try to space out the installments so we don't have to part with such a huge amount straight away. At least, thats my thinking behind the whole thing, but as with everyone else, i'm just guessing

This actually sort of makes sense to me. Its putting arguably more pressure on Dortmund than us - especially because they probably know we re likely just one of two or three clubs with that kind of cash on hand right now.

It's kinda like people referring to Ed saying "It's not going to be business as usual this summer" referring to COVID, but what did you expect him to say? If he said "We've got the funds to seriously strengthen the squard and we will do" then you know for a fact clubs will use that to their advantage with the current struggles. They'd place a price of £100M on a player worth £40 because they knew we had the cash. Similar to Villa with Grealish, does anyone actually think he's worth upwards of £80M?? He's good, but i don't think he's £80M worth of good!

Villa have probably given him the £80m price tag because they see him as the difference between surviving & going down. Don’t clubs usually lose about £50m a year outside the PL?

Without him they would’ve finished bottom of the league last year.

I mean let's be honest. There is no way we can afford him is there?

Also this has to be the dullest transfer saga ever. Yet we are on course for record-breaking page numbers. Hats off.

I don't mind waiting a season but I do worry that some other team would grab him when he is next available.

If there isn’t any significant movement on this by this time next week I think the muppet in me will have died a little bit. He’s trying to stay strong and fly the muppet flag but he’s on life support.

Internationals done, league starting soon, just has to be some movement. If not I think I’ll probably start to fall in the it’s never happening camp.
