Jadon Sancho| Staying at Dortmund for now

That's a bit more reassuring then :) Have you also seen any trends with our wage budgets? We are probably doing a bit better in that regard, compared to say 2 years ago. How I wish we didn't have Sanchez on our books...

In terms of wages, we seemingly reduced it by 25 to 30 millions pounds, it depends on when you start counting. So we are going in the right direction.

If Sane is going for just under 50m off the back of a year out with cruciate knee ligament injury with 1 year left on his contract when he only wants to go to Bayern then Sancho will be worth way more than that.

Sane is absolutely class and will take the piss.

Assuming that "sending a message of intent" = spending loads of money, we've been sending them out for years. Now we have to actually pay for some of it.

As of 31 March 2020, we owe £184m in outstanding transfer fees, all due in the next 12 months, plus another £87m of potential add-ons. This money all has to be paid, even if we sign no players at all this summer.

We've had our years of crazy spending and, unfortunately, we wasted most of it. Now is the time for tightening our belts, the time to be financially responsible. Any success in the next couple of years is going to have to be achieved by spending smart, rather than spending big.
But if that’s the way the club operates, paying fees over a number of years, it wouldn’t impact the possibility of spending this year that much? We’d surely do the same and stagger the payments so business as usual.

I really really hope this transfer happens. Our right side has been a big problem for a while now and Sancho won't just fix that problem, he'll blow it out the water.

My fear is the longer we leave it to do a deal, the more chance another team will come in and snatch him.

Woodward is going to have to find a good balance between staying ahead of the others teams and getting a good deal from Dortmund

You know, if we don't sign him for the right wing and just make Greenwood the guy... I wouldn't really be that upset. Obviously Sancho is perfect for our right wing and Greenwood will provide perfect depth, but the kid is so good.

I want Sancho quite bad. But when Mason is playing so good on the right, I just hope Mason still gets enough chances as I think he is just as talented.

Would like them both though, and the headache where they both play after.

I agree but you need to realise having Sancho also offers versatility.

You could play a 4231 in some games with Rashford, Martial, Sancho, Greenwood, Pogba and Bruno in some games.

Other games you could do a 442 with Sancho at LM and Greenwood at RM, and Rashford+Martial up top, again Bruno and Pogba in midfield.

Pogba is capable of playing defensively, and Bruno we know applies a lot of pressure so even those 2 playing slightly deeper roles but going forward when needed is an option against lower teams.

In games where 433 is an option again it can be an option, Pogba playing deep making challenges.

Against stiffer opposition Sancho or Mason can rotate, but a big squad is needed to challenge on all fronts, yes Matic and McTominay will obviously be playing in bigger games, but the fact is the team can be overloaded with attackers sometimes when required.

Mason would still play in FA Cups, against (perhaps not the top 4) but still a lot of games with less defensive midfielders playing but Pogba as a CDM / Deep-lying playmaker.

Mason would also be there in qualifying games in the CL etc.

There will plenty of options for Mason, and for all Mason, Sancho, Martial and Rashford to play at the same time (which I see being a real option at times).

sancho can play left right and middle.

Who knows, he could put rashford on the bench ..

How where you able to put all this down with the game going on?

Greenwood will get plenty of games as he’ll be main support for both Martial and (if we sign him) Sancho, we won’t have Ighalo next season unless we sign him permanently and long term it’s clear Greenwood is a striker rather than a wide forward.

Adding Jadon is essential, we can’t be reliant on James & co. in case of injury etc.

Greenwood was stellar tonight but we need to raise the quality across the squad; our first 11 can’t play every game & he’s potentially a generational talent - we can’t tighten the purse strings just yet.

Multitasking, I was watching the game realising that the team can actually retain the ball, and that Sancho doesn't necessarily mean Mason won't play

I think Greenwood can act as cover across the entire front 3. In that role, he’d get more than enough starts and sub minutes to keep him happy.

Agree entirely.

He played RW & LW at times tonight while naturally being a Striker; he’s the perfect cover for the way we want to attack & would get starts.

Really hoping we go all out for Sancho as the quality would be so high in attack.

Yep, we started with the below front 6 In the 2011 final against Barcelona

carrick, park, giggs, Valencia, chicharito, Rooney.

I’d say the front 6 who started today are on a similar par to that, add sancho and were in business, just need a centre back I think.

Id love to see the below in full flow

Rashford——-greenwood——-Sancho

I bet you were watching Jadon! You gotta look at that side and surely want to be part of that?!

And with Bruno, it gives Pogba less responsibility and pressure, so he should shine, and so stay at the club

Yep, it works both ways; twice on the edge of the box Brighton were caught between a rock [Pogba] & a hard place [Bruno] resulting in a goal & a shot off the post.

Matic has done well but imagining them with someone even more dynamic in the DM role really is a mouthwatering prospect.

Unfortunately Sane had a year left on his contract, Sancho has two. At best what the Sane transfer has done is set a 80-90m price tag rather than the reported 100m+

It's absolutely imperative we get Sancho if possible. We only beat Brighton earlier which isn't any sort of standard to judge. I want us to beat Real, Barca, Bayern etc too and Sancho is the type that will narrow the gap to those teams. And that's the level we should be aiming/striving for.

If anyone thinks that Sky Sports article has any ounce of reliability, then sorry but you certainly have been living under a rock.

This makes no sense to me. Matic is dynamic isn't he? He can carry the ball, tackle, intercept, spray passes (look at that volley to set Greenwood down the wing tonight.). People who say Matic needs to be more dynamic are really saying more attacking but you can't play with all 3 midfielders on the attack and nobody back offering defensive cover. If anything we need a like for like replacement for Matic for the future but in terms of playstyle he's absolutely perfect for our midfield.

This annoys me because the whole point of Matic is to calm thing down. You don’t want a dynamic all action DM in this set up it would be counter productive!

Matic has been great at line breaking passes into our creative players and sniffing out counters. His control in DM means we can shift the ball from left to right quickly and confidently or probe central.

Replace him with someone who is dynamic and you lose that calmness and stability, it would be reckless.

I fully agree with your post, I think Matic has 2-3 years at the top flight too, he's an important pivot/anchor in the midfield.

I'd actually argue given the last few games that a CDM is perhaps something that can be looked at in the following summer transfer window (summer 2021) because McTominay needs some time to develop to see what he evolves into next year, Matic offers a wealth of experience and confidence for Bruno and Pogba to go forward.

The only reason to get someone in would be if a true world class CDM was on the market, and they were offered to Man Utd with the player wanting to come, at that point sure sign them, but it's not a priority. (and the player is young that could give 8 or so years to the club) at that point its an absolute no brainer.

Getting someone like Sancho, cover at LB, and a squad option (VDB/Grealish) would be an amazing transfer window, and perhaps a CB option if it's expected Bailly will pick up injuries again.

Moving on Lingard, Pereira, Jones, Smalling, Sanchez is as big of a priority currently.

Greenwood is not a right winger he needs to be fighting martial for the number 9 spot

Uniteds problems for too long are square legs in round holes we need players in their specialist positions

Sancho is a must if not I'd even go for TRAORE from wolves

Exactly, I was telling someone earlier that quality passing and control is more important that someone running around making tackles. I am very sure a Thiago with a very fast and aggresive centre back will work just fine.

Don’t know what people you’re on about cause I’m certainly not asking to play with 3 attacking midfielders. Wanting dynamism doesn’t mean attacking.

It wasn’t a criticism of Matic, the way he closed down the player that lifted the ball into the box for the Maguire header that set up the 3rd goal was impressive & showed he still has legs in midfield.

As above, I was very impressed with his closing down for the 3rd goal.

His return to form has surprised/impressed me but I’m just as wary of how off the pace he has looked for periods here. The more comfortable we get dominating games, the more Matic will be isolated when we go forward, I just think an alternative to his style in DM could close spaces differently.

I think if you lose Pogba or Bruno from midfield then you need something different from the Matic role as the replacements for those players lack in areas.

He’s never isolated because the whole team pushes up.

Sorry but you’re taking rubbish here. The whole point of a Matic is that you can split CBs either side or allow one forward while he covers. Watch the game properly.

Matic is always within a stones throw of either our CB or one of Bruno or Pogba. He’s perfect for these games because he’s a constant link for the midfield and attack and is the reason nobody gets isolated.

Find me a single point in today’s match where he was isolated? It doesn’t happen because Ole is making us defend as a team.

You’re focusing specifically on today’s game, when I’ve complemented him for his performance & have mentioned we may need a different DM in other games.

He wasn’t isolated tonight, I didn’t say he was - we ran the game from beginning to end against one of the poorer sides in the league. You yourself have called him ‘perfect for these games’ - all I said was I’d also like to see Pogba/Bruno alongside another type of DM in others.

Games won’t always be as easy as today, Pogba will have to take more risks or [as happens in football] Pogba/Bruno will be missing; him being a stones throw away from McTom & Fred fulfilling the same role he did tonight has proven not good enough in the first part of the season - this 14 game run really has erased memories.

You need differing qualities in a DM sometimes & Matic has been good recently - they don’t have to be mutually exclusive thoughts.

I’m not sure what your issue is here; I don’t consider Matic the long term answer in DM but concede he’s in good form - can we not just enjoy the 3-0 win.

There's no way Woodward isn't going to back Solskjaer, he'll get whatever player he asks for. Adding Sancho to this team would be otherworldly.
