Jadon Sancho| Staying at Dortmund for now

It's so obvious we'll live to regret this, he'll go to someone else (probably in the PL) and become the best player in the league and we'll be watching enviously just like Hazard
I think this is what will happen. We've become circus post Sir Alex and it would be just like us to drop the ball fecking about all summer and then watching him dominate for another team like absolute weapons.

We obviously thought/hoped they’d lower their demands
My opinion is we're trying our usual techniques to get them to lower their demand (walking away, looking for alternatives etc). This is following a lot of the other high profile transfers we've done, except Dortmund won't budge, so Ed is a bit clueless on what to do. I'm betting he's gonna cave, especially if we have a terrible first game of the season.

Think this is off now and in reality, I am not complaining. No team is spending that sort of money this window other than Chelsea who had a transfer ban and is owned by a sugar daddy. Look at Real, Barca, Bayern, Liverpool hell even City and PSG...there’s no BIG business. Why? Because clubs cannot risk such huge transfers when potentially they might not see any full stadiums for the whole season.

Happy for us to bring in a Reguilon snd maybe someone for the right wing on loan and let’s just get on with it.

The incompetence is beyond belief! Not getting this deal over the line with literally NO competition has to be the last straw for this useless ownership.
It won't be though no matter how much we like it. They can keep doing this over and over again and there's not a thing we can do.

United they get bored / bankrupt and leave we're stuck.

I hope there are no takers for Sancho next summer and Dortmund cave on their asking price. That would be lovely. Mickey Mouse club.
Even if they sell him for 100m€ next summer it most likely would've been worth it to keep him this summer. Sancho on form for a full season would be easily worth the 20m difference.
Only way any interested buyer next season profits if Sancho has a horrible year and his value nosedives, but I doubt that's gonna happen.

From a strategic point of view it definitely makes muuuuch more sense for UTD to simply have paid the 120m a month ago given that a lot can happen in a year and it remains doubtful that next summer they will be the only ones having a free run on him (people easily dismiss City, Chelsea, Barca, real as potential bidders for various reasons, most logical, but things can change quickly). But I can understand United's reasoning for not valuing him at 120m in covid times, plenty of uncertainties.

I suspect you might be right.. my only concern is whether Dortmund would even accept it if we leave it so late. I’m not sure how many cards we hold in this negotiation

This is the clearest sign that we won't be signing him.

"Once Covid is over, we'll be competitive in the transfer market".

In 2022 we may have a shot. Sorry muppets.
Yeah I think that tells you where the club is in terms of our transfer budget. Two things I find interesting - A) how unwilling Glazers are to ever put in a bit of their money and B) why we negotiated as much as we did if we were looking for "value" when signing Sancho. Players like Sancho, Mbappe etc don't get signed on such deals. VDB, sure. But not elite talents.

He left out the 2nd part of his quote...

So basically nothing new in terms of a bid even being made yet...

It'll only be dead for me if they actually do receive and reject a bid, everything else is still posturing

The extra bit isn't from the quote.

This transfer window is our best and only chance at signing Sancho. The rest of the big spenders either had other targets or were committed to not spending due to financial uncertainty. There'll be a bidding war for Sancho next summer which we won't even be a part of as the other options will be more desirable.

I don't understand the logic here, maybe I am missing something.

Dortmund aren't winning the Bundesliga anytime soon, nor the Champions League. They'll be paying Sancho €15m a year so that €20m is reduced to €5m. Doesn't seem like much of an incentive.

We hold no cards in the negotiation, but if we cave and offer them something they like the look of €80m now, €20m next year, €20m the year after, then they might just accept. Theres been lots of specuation that Dortmund want the €120m upfront, but theres been nothing to back that up. Reports say they want €120m guaranteed, with no addons etc, regardless of how easy they might be to acheive. Seems like Ed wants to go down the route of addons to try and lower the price a bit

Are you sure that this is how the math is supposed to work in this case?

Anyway, getting further in the CL, getting more money from the sponsors (and probably some additional sales from their shop) as well as helping up to set up their image as a top club is probably worth a little bit more than that.

It was a similar situation last year with Leicester demanding 80M for Maddison and a year later United ended up with Bruno and Van de Beek for less than that sum put together. Who knows what might happen before the next year? Sancho might not be the only option or even the best option.

A week ago I'd buy into the whole bonus clause thang but now I'm just empty

I think that this has been a good tactical ploy by us - we’ve known for some time that we can not afford to spend that money on one player in this current climate - whatever you think of our finances - revenues and associated sponsorship are all going to be massively down - we are not City or Chelsea - we don’t have an unlimited credit facility - we’ve let this one roll while we sort out our other deals - just watch the next 2 signings come in quick - well priced/negotiated on the backdrop of the Sancho no-go deal

Thats fine and all, except the alternatives we're linked with are Douglas feckin Costa and sicknote Golf Boy.

I'm depressing myself by watching all of Chelsea's new attacking signings instead

Fecked either way aren't we
It'll be another year watching City or L'pool dominate and us far behind if we don't get our act together. But maybe it's already accepted, cause of covid19, funds are low...*

(*I suggest you refrain from this comment if you're feeling very depressed by the Sancho news, it'll will make your symptoms worse)

If we don’t sign him well live to regret it in the coming seasons.

He’ll be world class for someone in England.

I know it’s against a second division team, but he has been so good. The way he finds space and glides with the ball. Pay up the fecking money Ed

I'm not, no. Math isn't my strong suit. Sancho's wage is a cost that Dortmund have already assumed they're paying but it's still part of the equation. If they sell him, they realize a substantial savings on wages and have the income from the sale.

Shirt sales probably don't count, similar to United and IMO Haaland is more cruical to where they'll end up this year than Sancho. They're a pretty big club already, again, not going to supercede Bayern or any other top European teams in people's estimation because they kept Sancho. It seems strange to me.

Highly doubt Wolves would bin him for cheap at all  , they'll know we're desperate and Premier League clubs have never been known to do us a solid on transfer fees anywhere near the same way German clubs fall over themselves to bless their Big Daddy Bayern with their best talent for cheap

Not like they need money either
Half of the Sancho fee isn't cheap though, is it? Doubt he'd go for more than £60m right now, maybe up to £70m but still leaves us with a tonne of money to strengthen elsewhere.

In what sense is having last minute signings close to the leagues infancy seen as smart business ? Less time for Ole to prep the players, less time for them to become comfortable with a new environment, even more pressure given that they are expected to perform under such circumstances.

I'm pretty sure Solskjaer spoke about the importance of having players ready before the seasons start before the window opened. It's been another poor showing by Woodward.
