Yes, but we're obviously not signing a £60m to £80m rated player for back-up with on-going deficiencies in the first team. He'll be going straight to the starting eleven, and his best two positions are currently occupied by our best two attackers, so I don't see it as ideal but rather a nice to have.
To be honest I want us to sign him, he looks quality. If his best position was right wing, now that would be ideal.
Definition of 'backup' need to be sorted out here. Backups are bench warmers and learners who come up on emergency or make cameo. Gomez, chong are backup. Grealish isn't. Pogba (if he stays) , bruno, grealish (if he signs) all are first team squad players. All play and part of 60 odd matches over a season with different combination and formation depending on the opposition.
I wonder if there's any truth to this story of trying to tie up this (or any) transfer before the season even ends. I think Grealish is a no brainer, especially if Pogba leaves. He's more than proved himself, and looks ripe for the step up to a bigger team. Yet another leader as well, after signing Bruno. These characters will serve us well in the long run, in addition to their obvious quality.
This. We cant moan about lack of depth and having to start rubbish like Lindgard and at the same time dont want to sign good players because they are not guaranteed to start every single game. In his last 50 games he has 19 games as attacking mid, 12 as a center mid, 10 as left mid and 8 as a left forward, playing every position with a 7+ average rating
Being able to cover that many roles and doing well in them makes him exceptionally versatile. No matter how you spin it, he adds a tonne of both depth and quality.

The lack of plan B forward is the issue about that bench. And also wtf is attacking mid like Grealish doing in defensive mid role or no 6 role.

When we have four matches in two weeks, you don't want any of your players to start more than three of them.

I like him but what is his natural position? Mc? Lw? No10? Can he play classic central midfielder?
Hes not strictly an attacking mid though, check out the link in my other post. Hes been played all over the place and done well. Considering hes played LM and LF for Villa (and done well) i see no reason why he cant fill in at LW for us if the need arise
He plays as CM in 433 not 4231 formation. And when Villa plays 4231, he operates wide or as no 10. Nothing to justify that we can get the best out of him in the role that you are thinking we should play him.
I'm thinking that Grealish will be the cheaper and getable alternative to Sancho for RW.

Not weird at all It’s a brilliant question and I’m certain he can, as I’ve said before the ball stick to him like glue. he’s an unbelievable additions to a squad where you want 14 players genuinely fighting it out for the 10 outfield spots.
Sign Grealish, Sancho and Partey and I think we have a squad that’s more than capable of competing.
Can't see him fit anywhere else if he wants starting XI.
Erm...How's about JLingz and Perreira for Grealish? That should compensate Villa adequately. Or will we still need to pay any money in addition?
Lingard and Pereira are probably only worth £40m combined, and that is being very optimistic and generous. I imagine Grealish will go for considerably more than that. Plus they're both just average players, Villa will know that, and there's no sense in replacing a very good player with two average ones. Better to take the money and look for another very good player with it

They'd still be pretty good players for a Villa team fighting in the bottom of the table, or Championship.
Doubt the players would be willing to move down to Championship, though, even if that probably is their lvl.
We might be able to sell Pereira in Europe for about €15 million but who will buy Lingard with his wages and his form in the last 2 seasons?

I agree and i too hope we are working on deals before the window opens. Even if Pogba stays we should go for Grealish. Right now if Bruno is rested or injured we're back to Lingard. There's no harm having depth to such an important position. They could also play together in a diamond with Pogba taking a more left side position and Bruno the right with Grealish more central and all of them capable of interchanging.

Yeah lingard especially has proven he is of the required ability for the premier league but is in awful form. Someone will think a change of scene will sort him out and take a punt. Pereira would be a good squad player for a mid table la liga team, which is not an insult.
Even if we manage to get just Grealish and no sancho. It still opens up the possibility of us playing a 4-2-2-2 formation with Fred joining Grealish and bruno in attack with rashford and martial as a very mobile strike pairing.

Just because he plays in the pivot in a 4231 does not mean he functions as a DM, and the difference between a 433 and a 4231 is minuscule at best unless you play in a very rigid system.
You get confused with just a name of “DM’‘ or ‘’no 6’’. It’s just name where you play not what type role you play. You are playing deeper which also restrict the player from creating final third end product. It’s not a position where you want to get the best out of attacking midfielder like Grealish who likes to supply end product passing or even goal. His speciality is never dictate tempo of the game like a deep playmaker or winning the ball like a water carrier.
Why not in midfield? He plays there for Villa. It's not like he can't operate with Bruno, his skillset is useful both defensively and going forward, he can play on the left of midfield or just central.
He can't play right, that's for a right winger.

Bruno would be a bit wasted there, he does his best work in the final third. He's already come in and stamped his place and quality on the team, new signings in midfield should based around that instead of telling him to make for the next guy.

Bruno plays deeper for Portugal. He doesn't play the number 10 role there but then again they have B Silva etc.
This defensive vs attacking thing...the Grealish I've seen has an insane engine. He's all over the pitch for Villa, picking up the ball from defenders, linking up play, creating up front. Not a bad tackler either. Just think of how much 'defensive' work Bernardo Silva and KDB put in for Citeh. Neither can be called a defensive player by any stretch of the imagination. It's about how the team plays and how hard they work off the ball. A proper DM covering would work pretty well in a 3 man midfield with Bruno and Grealish. Dynamic, energetic and yet creative midfield. Indeed this is where he wins hands down over Maddison for me.
