Ivan Toney | Banned until 16th January 2024 Stay on Topic!

Not bad that. Could have been much worse. And Brentford will have him back on time to stay up if it's even a question

I wish they come down hard on City and their 115 FFP STEALS just like they did on Toney!

I think it’s incredibly harsh and I’m sure others have gotten away with much more lenient sentences. That being said, it’s hard to have much sympathy for footballers that are stupid enough to break the rules that absolutely everyone knows are in place.

Rio comparisons feel apt. Both cases where it seems highly likely nothing particularly nefarious was going on but what the players did was also the same crime that someone doing something extremely nefarious would commit, so the punishment has to reflect that.

Yup. Had this conversation with my dad so many times. The amount of betting ads in and around football (all sports, really) is ridiculous. Every time Sky Sports goes to an ad break, there is at least one betting ad. This shit should be banned.

Unfortunately they're the only companies willing to spend big money on the ad slots so it's a double edged sword.

Betting ads are the 'new' tobacco sponsorship

"In game" betting should be banned.

Is it really highly likely Rio wasn't doing anything nefarious?

For clarity, I'm saying it's highly unlikely he hid actions that would've given him an unfair advantage over his competitors (I'm not sure about it, just the impression I've got without ever looking in to it in depth). I find the suggestions he was hiding recreational drug use easy to believe.

Leaves Southgate looking a bit stupid, insisting on selecting him for squads over the past season after Toney had admitted his guilt.
Yet he wasted no time in insisting that Greenwood would never play for England again. Seems he has one rule for some offenders and not for others.

That you would compare them says a lot about you.

I think the punishment is about right because it's effectively a half season ban of football up until January. If they'd done a 6 month ban that wouldn't have worked. I am sure they took that into account.

It was never worthy of having the book completely thrown at him like some were suggesting because the nature of what he did wasn't particularly bad. Bad in volume but the severity was low.

Let's put it in perspective, he'll miss half a season. It's really not that bad. He's not particularly old, he'll waltz straight back in at Brentford no problem at all. It's put a dent in any hopes of a big transfer this summer but all he has to do is come back in Jan and bang in 10 goals and that will rekindle. I don't think anyone looks at him like they would a proven drugs cheat or whatever, he has just been really fecking daft.

Aye, I always presumed Rio was chonking the cheeba.

Does anyone know how he was actually found out? None of the articles seem to explain this. Did he admit to someone who then squealed? I am sure he was not winning a ton of money consistently because no amateur bettor ever does, so did he just hit a big one?

Greenwood ? :nervous:
The club needs to decide what they're going to do about him ASAP, they've had plenty of time to sort out all the ins and outs

On the football side he fits a big hole that the team needs to fill, an arsehole he may be but he's not been found legally guilty of anything, there's no doubt that if United "can" him another team will certainly take him and that could be a rival.

Is it possible for him to make some amends for his behavior, for example, with financial and personal support for victims of what he was purported to have done? Is any form of redemption possible?

You're asking why someone accused of rape, domestic violence and threats to kill was treated differently to someone accused of gambling inappropriately?

Someone looks stupid, but it isn't Southgate.

Bloody hell, are you trying to compare these two crimes for seriousness

Nothing at all alike.
Toney has repeatedly broken an absolutely clear rule.

I assume the 3727 is the amount of accounts he's tried to make a sensible post with...

better luck in number 3728!

"Nothing football related"
Can he play FIFA and FM?

Did it say what he bet on, games he played in, transfers or games he had no involvement in, also how many came in? Would it be different in an employee buying shares in their work place if you know they have a good product?

You mean insider trading?

No, a factory worker like myself believes in a product that said company is making, decides to put a few pound on product, insider as working on it but no clue if it comes off, my question is what did he bet on, Brentford to lose?

Playing devil’s advocate here I’ll point out you’re actually comparing someone found guilty of a crime versus someone who had all charges against them dropped, so yes, they should be treated differently.

I’d also point out that the guilty until proven innocent brigade are usually the first people who would scream blue murder if they lost their job and reputation as a result of allegations that were later dropped.

I can’t help but think how the media reaction would be different had this been one of United’s star players.
