Ivan Toney | Banned until 16th January 2024 Stay on Topic!

id be fine taking Kane for 60, just highly doubt levy remotely plays ball. Hate that man and part of the reason id be fine letting kane rot in spurs for another year winning nothing. Im in agreement with you, which is why im laughing at the people acting like signing someone who cant play until january is somehow the worst idea in the world if it means we have solved our CF issue for a long time.
I can't see Kane joining anyone for 60m it's just not on the cards.

agree to disagree, since we have no idea what brentford would want to sell him for. If toney still gonna be 80 plus or something then yeah i wouldnt do it. Until i hear what number he hypothetically would go for i couldnt say either way.
And to say it is terrible squad planning is stupid haha. We have so many holes in this squad the terrible squad planning would be blowing the entire load on Kane ha. Our CM is so old and slow as is. Not adding some serious quality in there will be huge detriment for any true hopes we have. But i digress on a toney thread. 8 month suspension is right in a weird sot for sure.

Unless it's less than 20m then it's not worth it, even if we get someone else in for the first part of the season.

That's just not going to happen though, Brentford are much more likely to hold out until January and see him as a winter signing than sell him on the cheap.

Agree on not blowing it all on Kane though, and you're probably right in thinking outside the box when it comes to summer signings, if we're going to make the most of what is available to spend.

That's contingent on it being "cheap" as regardless of the ban he's a massively important player for Brentford.

I also don't think you can just forsake the now for a long term view, there needs to be some balance. It's not like the only other striker to look at is Kane.
if anything this puts brentford in an almost more of a selling spot for toney. If united come calling he will prob want to join that. And can a team like brentford really afford to have their best striker on ice for that long? Could be a risk as they arent exactly a sure bet to not be relegated. But idk how the situation plays out so i cant really speak for what is in their minds.

Also, if they're banning a player for 8 months, are they going to obliterate City for systematic cheating?

Because it's an obviously stupid idea.

Nobody is going to buy Ivan Toney now when they could instead target any of god knows how many strikers who are a) younger than Toney, b) actually have a chance of developing into something more than an above-average PL CF and c) don't involve writing off half a season without their new CF signing.

8 months is huge, we really need to see the charges in detail.

wow so tony is just an above average CF in the PL? Dude has 20 goals for brentford, 3rd in EPL stats for goals scored. 14 of those being non pens so not like all he does is score pens.

3rd best striker in the league, carried Brentford with his goals and you don’t want him? He’s only marginally behind Kane with his stats this season but everyone wants Kane right?
Not fussed on Kane, but don't want Tony. 3rd best is not good enough for UTD they need the best.

Funny how the ban starts right before they play Spurs, who is in 7th but tied on points with Villa. FA can't have only 1 London club getting Europe next season

i agree we need the best but dont get your reasoning. 3rd best isnt good enough? Haaland is the top but obvs isnt going anywhere and sure as hell city wouldnt sell to us regardless, and kane is getting up their in age. So to dismiss him as 3rd best and not worthy seems weird to me. Toney seems to have similar stats as osimhen, who everyone loves, while playing in the much tougher overall league on a much worse team. Idk just seems weird to me but i havent really watched much of brentford tbh.

Eight month ban from all football related activity up to and including 16th January 2024. Can return to training for the final four months of the ban, so September.

If they can give this kind of punishment to a player I wonder what they should give to clubs that don't follow rules.

If he broke rules, he needs to be banned. It all depends what and how he did break them. However, 8 months ban?

I feel a bit sorry for him, as others have said it seems harsh considering how big a ban players like Suarez got, and considering the current league leaders have been accused of financial cheating.

If it were up to me gambling would be banned, or at least restricted like how it is in Norway.

dang 8 months makes it more interesting than 6.

It's really only 5.5 months of meaningful matches . They only have 2 matches left, then Aug Jan and it's not like big nose Southgate was gonna call him up for the European Nations matches, he only got called up in March for the friendly's because Rashford withdrew and he only played 8 minutes

Media will be like "We welcome you to SkyBet Premier League Discussion" program where we will discuss the hot topic of the ban on Toney.

Yeah, it’s completely hypocritical. Obviously I don’t know the charges and whether he’s been betting on matches he has played in, but I hope he gets some support for it over the next eight months.

Yes, compared to genuinely elite strikers he is a relatively average player.

A third of all his goals for Brentford have been penalties. The 14 goal non-penalty tally is the same as Calumn Wilson's and one more that Ollie Watkin's this season. Two other above-average PL strikers. Except Wilson racked up his goals in much fewer minutes, while Watkins has at least returned at that level in the PL in more than one season, unlike Toney. Meanwhile players like Patrick Bamford and Tammy Abraham have all scored more than that in previous seasons. This isn't in any way a special player.

It's a good player, someone who wouldn't "solve our CF issues for a long time" but would fill in until we find the actual top class striker who could. But in order to do that, he has to not be banned for half a season, which he is.

And even if he was some potentially elite CF, you still wouldn't sign him at the start of a half-season ban. You would sign him when he's actually available to play.

will just agree to disagree, especially since i havent been able to watch that much of brentford. Just know you dont finish top 3 in goals ( or at least be currently there at the end damn near) for a team like brentford being some trash forward.

Such weird timing. Essentially does Spurs and City a favour by just not waiting two more weeks. Might as well just start from next season if you've waited 36/38 games. But it's football, so common sense never seems to win out.

I'd love him here, even if in January. Especially if this means the price is heavily cut, and he could be our 2nd choice behind a marquee CF signing.

One good season doesn't make someone a top striker. Darren Bent scored 24 league goals for Sunderland once. James Beattie had 23 for Southampton in 2002/03 and finished third in the top scorer's list behind two slightly better known gentlemen.

Toney is doing well but there's no reason to believe that he's more than a decent Premier League striker who has found his level. Signing him as a squad option would make sense, depending on the finances; doing so at a time when he's off for the first half of the season, however, would be stupid.

How is the third best striker in the league behind Haaland and Kane, while playing at Brentford, not good enough for United?

You realise he’d probably score more in a better team right?

What are Brentford's chances of survival like without him?

Pretty good I’d say - our points per game average without him is pretty good ;) (small sample size obvs) Would have thought we’d have been planning for this outcome for a while.

k and also one good season doesnt make someone a one hit wonder when it just happens to be their first top season. Everybody has to start somewhere. Even someone like Kane had to have a good first season haha.

As I said yesterday was expecting a ban till January- could have been worse!

I thought he'd get more.

Betting is shit, ruining lives more then drugs.
The FA saved his life.

Also, sign him up for peanuts, training from September - he'll be a machine for the second half of the season.

My first thoughts exactly.

They think if they don't attend the hearings it all goes away though. The PL have been absolutely pathetic in this whole process.

If they invite them to a hearing and they don't attend then it should go ahead without them. Sanction them and get it over with

But if that first top season happens at the age of 27 then that makes him a risky prospect - clubs have to assess whether he is a late bloomer or a one-season wonder. That, along with the ban, makes him an unappealing transfer target.

As a cheap punt without the ban, he'd be a decent signing. For the money Brentford are likely to demand, with him out of action until the middle of January, it's an awful idea.

Leaves Southgate looking a bit stupid, insisting on selecting him for squads over the past season after Toney had admitted his guilt.
Yet he wasted no time in insisting that Greenwood would never play for England again. Seems he has one rule for some offenders and not for others.
