Ivan Perisic

Direct, old school type winger with the added caveat that he can go with either foot, for the right price there would be a lot to like about this transfer.

How exactly did we 'turn down' Silva?

And they're nothing alike. Nothing.

As for prices you're right but Silva and Perišić deals don't have anything in common and are not related by any means.

We must have turned him down. He isn't playing for United right now, is he? We clearly chose not to pursue him for some reason.

I like the idea of this. Competition for Martial on our left side. Martial has had a poor season, needs a kick up the arse and we need competition in this area of the pitch. From the very little I have seen it looks like a like for like for Martial.

So every player that is playing for a different club we've turned down then?

De Gea
Bailly Dier Rojo
Valencia Herrera Pogba Perisic
Mkhi Griezmann Martial
Three of our alleged targets would suit this system. But can't see Jose using this as his default formation. Maybe, for a few tough games, we'll see something like this.
This system with those players looks horrific. And Griezmann isn't a number 9.

1) Marcos Alonso cost 24 million and is 2 years younger
2) With every cog came mistakes such as Schurlle, Salah, Cuadrado, etc..

Correct, if we do sign Perisic only time will tell if he falls into the success or not category. Fergie signed plenty of flops or underwhelming names (Obertan, Kleberson, Young? Bellion, etc). But my point isn't that this signing will be good or not - it's that the manager tries to mix in the big names with ones that'll balance the team.

Edit:

Don't quote prices or age to me. I couldn't care less if he's 37 and cost £100million, we have a financial team to evaluate the feasibility and aren't going to bankrupt ourselves. And age is a mirage. Plenty of old timers have proven themselves capable and worthy.

It's not that he was offered so we turned him down. If we weren't interested at all we didn't turn him down.
It doesn't matter, it's just a strange thing to say.

WHAT, WHAT????? This is not the kind of player I will be happy with after the transfer window is closed! I can't fecking believe we're throwing away 3fecking5 million euro on this kind of GARBAGE!!! Woody and Mourinho - wake the feck up!! City and Chelsea are out there signing players as we speak while you two are waisting valuable time doing business with pub players. Did Woody read the wrong email or something because this looks like a Moyes kind of signing. Meltdown is not the correct word here. I'm actually lost for words. We were discussing players in the calibre of Griezmann after the EL title, not this kind of Sunderland kind of signing!!!!! I'm reaching some kind of boiling point here and I'm not easily stressed out. Get off the fecking phone, get on a plane and sign some serious names ffs!!!!!!!

Why don't you open a thread. That can cheer you up.

Are you mad that your precious LvG foundations get closed ?

looks pretty pacey and unpredictable. Going to be very useless in 90% of games when teams sit deep versus us but might be a nice addition in the hardest games or when we go a goal up and park the bus.

Honestly haven't seen him play for Inter and never noticed him for croatia, but mourinho is usually oky as making signings like this, and also if we are spending 83m£ on Griezmann were were really going to spend another 70m on another winger, especially if we need a striker to come in which will likely cost 70m. 80 + 70 is 150m before we have even tackled defence or midfield. We were never going to spend 220m + on three attacking players before even looking at midfield and defence. This guy can provide some competition and options

One is a left footed winger, the other is a right footed inside forward. How are they like for like?

If we sign Greizmann and a quality striker, I doubt many will be too upset if we bring in Perisic as well.

In Jose I trust. so, if Jose really want to buy this guy, hopefully he can help us to get better next season aka winning more trophies (min. 3: EPL, FA and League cups :D )

Just for the record, Perisic is a right footed winger who usually plays on the left side. He is not left footed but he can pretty much use his left foot if he needs to

We do have to get away from this 'every player we sign has to be a galactico' attitude. Seen it when linked with Dier, Lukaku and even Rodriguez(who was a galactico not long ago). Now Perisic is seen as a bog standard player, which he clearly isn't.
All these players would walk into our current XI.

It's maybe a case of how much do we want to strengthen: a bit or enough, with some of them?

Exactly. Reminds of the Ashley Young signings Ferguson made toward the end of his tenure. Solid player but truly stopped us from bringing in world class talent. We need to be buying the best in the world if we want to win the Champions League next season.

Reality check: we are NOT aiming for Champions League next season. Competing for the league will be enough, for which Perisic is a good signing.

Marcos Alonso actually cost €23 million, which comes about at £19 million. Inter have rejected our €35 million offer and want €60 million which would be £52.5 million right now. He is 28, never been more than a solid player. There is little to no resale value, Mourinho has bought plenty of flops but none of them cost as much as what Perisic would cost and they are all younger players who were eventually sold for minimal loss (and in many cases profit). If Perisic turns out to be a dud, how much do you think we can get out of him?

Contrary to what believe we don't have a bottomless pit of cash, we operate within a finite budget. Inter are asking absurd sum of money for a player they need to sell to meet FFP requirements. How much do you think English clubs would want for Dier and Keane? Both are much younger than Perisic, English, on a long term contract and their respective clubs don't need the money at all.

Before you know it, we've blown in excess of £120 million on Dier, Keane and Perisic. Griezmann isn't going to cost a penny less than his release clause at £86 million. That's £200 million worth of players already bought and we still have two glaring holes in the squad in form of a Striker and a Left Back. We've been extremely careless with the money ever since SAF retired, we need to be getting more bang for buck because squad could use an overhaul. Spending £50 million on likes of Perisic isn't going to help that.

It's cost dependent. For £25m he could be a good signing. For the £50m quoted as Inter's asking price, he is not.

Could Mourinho be aiming at something like this ?

--------new DM/Herrera----Pogba/Fellaini--------------------
Mkhitaryan/Mata-----------------------------Perisic/Lingard
--------------------Griezmann/Pereira------------------------
----------------------Rashford/Martial------------------------

Switch Mikhi and Griezmann positions.

This is a rather reasonable post.

Playing in the same position does not make players "like for like" at all. Is Rooney a like for like with Ibrahimovic?
I was meaning from a positional sense, not their playing styles. Perisic would bring something different to the table and can challenge Martials position. He is not the same player, that is not what I was meaning.

It's just the beginning of negotiations. The final price should be around 35-40 million. Given the revenue we generate, slight overpricing is understandable and not really a problem for us.

More of a "consolidating 6th place" (potential) signing, really.

I don't know why you feel he's that bad, I really don't. He provides a different option to Martial (or indeed, any other wide player in our team), is a seasoned international and in the age bracket where he will provide competition and cover for Martial without necessarily replacing him.

A signing like this lends balance to the squad and makes it more complete. We are definitely better off having him.

Inter need to sell for a lot of money for FFP

Mourinho needs to put United's wallet where his mouth is and help them out

I thought FFP rules are obsolete?? Could be wrong.

I don't think we'd do any better than we've done this season, Griezmann isn't suited to playing with either of those 2 as the #9 and Perisic doesn't add any more goals or assists threat than the players we already have, even if Griezmann replicates Ibra's goals output we've not upgraded the attack in any way, and it was our poor attack that cost us top 4.

Seems like you've never been involved in the process of bargaining. Have a little patience.

I've mainly watched him in internationals, such as last summer when I saw all of the Checz games. I saw absolutely nothing at all to suggest he's at a level where he'll elevate a top 6 team further.

As a squad player and a rotation option I wouldn't particularly mind, but anything more than £20 would be absolutely insane for a player at that level, with little room for improvement. See the post from @Kush above for more on why.

With Perisic and Griezmann, we'll need another striker no doubt, with a midfielder and a center back. That's means 5 signings to make a good formation. Say the new CB was Keane.

De Gea
Valencia - Bailly - Keane - Darmian
Herrera / new DMF - Pogba
Griezmann - Mikhi - Perisic
New CF

We can sacrifice the CMF and keep with our choices if we get short on money, but I don't prefer this.

In this formation Perisic will be always on the left flank providing width while Griezmann will be cutting inside to join Mikhi in the midfield while leaving Valencia space to rush forward.
