It took 60 minutes to get a shot on target.

You do realise it took us 6 months to "gel" last season? I understand that we've made new signings, but we can't always use that as an excuse. Moreover, we signed players who we thought would fit into the system without any issues. About time we moved forward instead of sideways.
Ah ok, because we had last season without those players they should automatically gel into the team. Not only that but because we bought them under the understanding they should gel straight into the team, they should simply do so . You really are a special kind of poster.

They aren't magic players, of course there is a settling period with such a turn around.

I don't expect us to show title challenging form from the outset, but we were really poor, today.

They are professionals, at the end of today. Not like they're playing football for the first time. We couldn't string together a proper attack, as usual.

Rooney actually almost messed up the chance. He's lucky walker knocked it in otherwise he's have missed a sitter.
I was just being facetious, Rooney has played long enough to know he must be taking those first time.

I strongly believe that our problems will be solved quicker if LVG stops messing around with the 4-2-3-1/4-4-2 crap, sign Pedro and play everyone where they should be: Memphis on the left, Rooney as a striker, Pedro on the right, and Herrera as the most advanced one of our midfield 3.

Look we weren't really poor. The typical exaggeration has come put again.

It was a dull affair but we were still the better team, we just struggled in the first ten minutes and faded in the last 10. Of course there is massive room for improvement but Spurs aren't pushovers, the result is a platform to push on.

You keep making excuses, don't worry. I expect more from this enormous football club. Not year after year of a new excuse. We keep spending money like this and this will become the norm. "Oh, they still need to settle".

Keep making excuses, we have played one game FFS

Ah, the typical redcafe meltdown after a win. Wonderful.

Not sure if we were the better team. Spurs may have moved ahead of us by the end. They created the better chances, and we were quite lucky to come away with a win.

Funny we could hit 10 cross bars and 15 posts before 60th minute mark and still we would have 0 shots on target. What a stat...really this place sometimes.

Those are shots on target.

Yes, we won..but some people are acting almost Rawk like in that we cannot criticize anything that the manager does..People are not worried about a lack of creativity because its the first game of the season, but because its a continuation of the same thing from last season, with our most creative player benched. Yes, over the top criticism is annoying, but sometimes the criticism is fair, and I believe that this one such time.

A hallmark of past United sides is the amount of chances we used to create and the relentless nature of our attacks, which often resulted in us more games than we lost. We only scored 63 goals last season, and our attacking play is poor. Can we at least say that?

Depay, Rooney and Pedro if played together in 433 have goals in them. Mata, Herrera will also chip in.

People said the same about RVP, Falcao, Rooney and Di Maria, was supposed to be the best front line in the world, I think people are being exceedingly naive, thinking a 27 year old Pedro is going to make u title contenders, or make everything fall into place

It's poor but I think we will have to get used to not creating much, especially if we don't add some more pace, skill and quality in the final third. I don't think we will be an exciting team looking at the style of play and our current players.

In fairness though we looked well off the pace today so we will improve over next few weeks once players are a bit sharper.
Dont underestimate the opposition we came up against. If this was a Sunderland et al i would agree that we should be worried about not creating much but Spurs looked really sharp defensively.

It was a meh game but it was the first game of the season

Being played on the right doesn't mean you're a winger though. He's clearly there to cut in while the fullback overlaps. Same with Young on the other side.

I actually agree that Mata should be played central ideally, but it's not like Mata's been trying to burst down the touchline to put right footed crosses in

For me that's partly the reason why we don't create any good chances. Everyone knows Mata is cutting inside and it just makes it extremely crowded to play through the middle. You need a proper winger who can do both to keep us unpredictable. I still maintain that Mata is better served playing behind a striker. Especially now that we have the likes of Schneiderlin/Schweinsteiger/Carrick sitting behind the front 4.

Give it time, no need for this kind of thread. Spurs made us work hard today and we won, enjoy your weekends now.

I think those who are worried, like myself, it's the fact that we looked very similar to last year. Surely, we'd be able to some improvements, even with new players? I don't what I've said in this thread is over the top. Are we not warranted to have expected improvements, in the first game of the season?

It wasn't bad. Spurs actually put in a real defensive shift. Dier was good at DM and walker Alderweireld and jan wEre also really good today. Spurs are not exactly top level but they aren't exactly pushovers.

Did you prefer us to draw 0-0 having 10 shots on target than winning 1-0 against a good side and being solid. That too on the first day of the season. We do have improvements. Last year we conceded 2 against Swansea, we lost the game, had about 10 players injured. Now we have very good full backs decent CBs good CMs. All are improvements over last season.

As for why team hasn't gelled, we had Memphis Darmian Schneiderlin Romero (and schweini) playing for the first time. Shaw also to be fair is like a new signing. That's almost half the side. Most of them are playing together for the first time they aren't magicians. You get the understanding with other players when you play reasonably. Vidic and Rio did not have an understanding from the first game

I am not panicking.

We had 5 new players and we a clearly not fully fit yet and we were playing against a team that are no pushovers.

I think playing more games more recently probably helped Tottenham with their sharpness but they still made a lot of mistakes.

Give it a few weeks and we will be dominating everyone.

We played a Spurs side which played well today. Defensively they weren't really poor at all(and neither were we too Darmian left).you can critiscize a manager but there should be a reason for it. We created a lot of chances. Eg. The young shot, Memphis shot which was high, Rooney shot (which was too high for him), the goal, couple of free kicks etc. we may not have had shots on target but that's not any indication of not creating anything. We can create and shoot wide. How do you blame the manager for this? Unless you want to blame him whatever happens (then please go ahead).

Herrera would have made no difference imo. Maybe he would have been more defensively solid than mata or Memphis but creating wise he isn't what makes a difference for us. You forget in all those games you mentioned Herrera was a Cm for us and we failed to create much.

Hallmark of the past cannot e compared. Sir Alex had a fear factor and we could win 8-2 playing Anderson in CM. we can't do that anymore. Maybe you should watch moyes' season when we leaked goals for fun by leaving spaces while trying to attack

LVG still playing people out of position. It'll take another disastrous run or poor performances for him to figure it out, just like last season and by then we'll be way too far behind.
