Israeli - Palestinian Conflict

My one and only post in this thread. Fair to say I actually like Jon Stewart.

Jon Stewart Learns What Happens When You Criticize Israel

This about sums up this thread., Being outraged at seeing children killed and injured equates to anti semitism.

Well, they will not. Just as Jews are not likely to go back to their pre-1948 settlements in Arab controlled areas. Peace will only be achieved here when the Arabs move on.

They'll give up the right of return providing they are offered more than aparthied by Israel, thats been Israels best
offer so far

70% of Sderot kids traumatized
Despite recent calm, study finds third of all Qassam-ridden city's residents suffer from severe anxiety

Shaked and Maor Harush, 11-year-old twins from Sderot, saw a Qassam rocket explode a few feet away from them, setting a car ablaze. Since then, fear has become an everyday presence in their lives.

Shaked suffers from the worst of the trauma. She refuses to leave home without her parents. A slamming door makes her jump. Any conversation about the security situation is out of the question when Shaked is around, and her family knows to avoid words like Qassam and Color Red altogether.

I'd suggest its 100% of Gazas children that are truamatised

"Classified US military documents released by WikiLeaks in October 2010, record Iraqi and Coalition military deaths between January 2004 and December 2009. The documents record 109,032 deaths broken down into "Civilian" (66,081 deaths), "Host Nation" (15,196 deaths),"Enemy" (23,984 deaths), and "Friendly" (3,771 deaths)."
The difference? Media wasn't showing every single minute children dead or injured. in Gaza? Every second they show civilians and children injured, dead or just on the run and the last time I checked they are on war and I don't buy the part saying we can't compare the Gaza vs Israel... can we compare Iraq vs USA?

Not sure what your point is here.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/20...dio-advert-listing-names-children-killed-gaza

The Israeli Broadcasting Authority has banned a radio advertisement from a human rights organisation which listed the names of some of the scores of children killed in Gaza since the conflict began 17 days ago.

B'Tselem's appeal against the decision was rejected on Wednesday. It intends to petition Israel's supreme court on Sunday in an effort to get the ban overturned.

The IBA said the ad's content was "politically controversial". The broadcast refers to child deaths in Gaza and reads out some of the victims' names.

In its appeal, B'Tselem demanded to know what was controversial about the item. "Is it controversial that the children [aren't] alive? That they're children? That those are their names? These are facts that we wish to bring to the public's knowledge."

In a statement, the human rights group said: "So far more than 600 people have been killed in bombings in Gaza, more than 150 of them children. But apart from a brief report on the number of fatalities, the Israeli media refrains from covering them." By Thursday morning, the death toll in Gaza had exceeded 700.

B'Tselem went on: "IBA says broadcasting the children's names is politically controversial. But refusing to do so is in itself a far-reaching statement – it says the huge price being paid by civilians in Gaza, many of them children, must be censored."

Aid agencies said on Wednesday that a child had been killed in Gaza on average every hour for the preceding two days, and more than 70,000 children had been forced to flee their homes. There has also been a spike in the number of premature births.

"The shocking number of children being killed, injured, or displaced in Gaza demands an unequivocal international response to stop the bloodshed," Save the Children said. "Entire families are being wiped out in seconds as a result of the targeting of homes."

Dr Yousif al Swaiti, director of al-Awda hospital, said: "We have witnessed many premature births as a result of the fear and psychological disorders caused by the military offensive. The number of cases of premature births per day has doubled, compared to the average daily rate before the escalation."

And the stupidest comments of the day....

“There has only been one other instance where a democracy has been rocketed and pelleted with these projectiles of death, and that's Britain during World War II,” Netanyahu said.

Israel , he said, was undergoing a similar challenge and responding by “targeting the rocketeers and seeking to ferret out those terrorists who are hiding behind civilians while firing at our civilians.”

Liberman ratcheted the analogy up a notch, saying during his meeting with hammond that hat Hamas – like the Nazis – want to exterminate the Jews, and have no interest in a two-state solution.

Citing Winston Churchill and his stand against the Nazis, Liberman said that Israel expected a “special understanding” from Britain.

While London was being bombed during World War II, Liberman said. “we learned from Churchill that even if the price is blood, sweat and tears, a nation that seeks life is obligated to fight with determination for its freedom.”

This was a reference to Churchill's' famous speech to Parliament in 1940, soon after being appointed prime minister, in which he said: “I would say to the House as I said to those who have joined this government: I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering.”

So the plight of modern day Israelis is comparable to the plight of the Britons during the Blitz, when tens of thousands were killed, millions of kids were separated from their parents and city centres were flattened under the constant threat of a German land invasion. It's good to know Netanyahu is assessing the current situation with such a reasonable sense of proportion.

Yes - you'd think that an MIT graduate and a Sayaret Matkal officer would know better.

Perhaps he should firebomb Dresden to make things 'proportional'

Netanyahu has always been a belligerent cretin, not surprised to hear him conjure up drivel like this.

At least 30 people have been killed and 200 injured in the Israeli shelling of a UN school in northern Gaza that was being used as an emergency shelter.

In an interview with Al Jazeera Chris Gunness, the spokesman for UNRWA, the UN's humanitarian organisation in Gaza, said his organisation had been in contact with Israeli forces as fighting closed in on the shelter.

"We gave the Israelis the precise GPS coordinates of the Beit Hanoun shelter. We were trying to coordinate a window [for evacuation] and that was never granted."

The man is delusional. If he actually thinks the day-to-day life of the modern day Israeli citizen is in any way 'similar' to that of the average Brit during WW2, his judgement is so impaired that he is a danger to both Palestinians and Israelis.

He wasn't comparing lifestyles though, just the fact that a democracy IS being rocketed with the only precedent being London.

Perhaps I should ask my mother to post from Tel Aviv. She lived through the Blitz and now waiting on sirens again for a 45 second dash. Thank G-d for Iron Dome. And that Israel invested in bomb shelters while Hamas used their cement to line tunnels.

More civilians died in Iraq but the media really didn't care.

In the US they probably didn't because it was post 9-11 and the hysteria there meant anything the government did was justifiable.

Throughout Europe and Middle East though there was a lot of coverage and outrage, 1 million people marched in London in opposition to the war, British war crimes were documented across all media channels in the UK, and there had been calls for Tony Blair to be charged with war crimes.

He mentioned the Blitz before turning to Britain's Foreign Secretary to use these exact words, 'Israel is undergoing a similar bombardment'. He didn't just make the point that a democracy today is being attacked as one was during WW2, he drew a direct comparison - implying that the extent of the rocket attacks on Israel is similar to the extent of the Nazi bombing of Britain. It's total nonsense and is very telling of Netanyahu's mindset. Like many in the Israeli establishment, he has allowed his frustration at the current unpleasant situation facing Israelis to develop into a delusion that makes him view the situation as something that is much more desperate than it actually is. Sure, it is tragic on an individual level for anyone who has lost a loved one to a rocket attack or murder, but on a national level, the situation isn't even remotely comparable. Civilians in Britain were dying by the tens of thousands and millions were displaced, and the country was having to fight a total war just to survive. That is the context of Britain's military response to Germany, and if Netanyahu thinks Israel's military response to Hamas should be viewed in a similar context, it explains a hell of a lot.

One clarification - it wasn't just the US there. Granted they were by far the dominant number, so were most likely to be involved in the greatest proportion of civilian deaths.

From a US media perspective... I know I heard the number stated in US media on several occasions but it certainly didn't get the press that the current crisis is getting. This is quite odd since the US is so pro-Israel. You'd think they would attempt to hide these numbers but they are not doing. Related point, I think if you asked the general population in the US what the civilian death toll was in Iraq, they'd be off by one or two orders of magnitude and would be shocked at the real numbers.

I'm not sure why but I think international revulsion at Israel's beaviour is very strong this time around.

Has he been charged though? To the best of my knowledge he was re-elected by probably more than a million.

Has any other Briton been charged for war crimes?

Analogies between different conflicts are never accurate.

No, since then he's been rewarded with the position of Middle East 'peace envoy' as some kind of ironic joke.

Are the UN going to condemn Israel shelling a feckin UN shelter?

"Those responsible are turning schools into potential military targets, and endangering the lives of innocent children," says Ban.

Doubt they will before a thorough investigation, but you just never know with the UN.

Sometimes you do really think someone somewhere is playing some sort of cruel game with us eh

If the IDF is so accurate at picking out targets how come they need to investigate whether or not they have hit a target?

They should know this straight away.

"Picking out targets" is a term that should be used loosely when the actual picking out is the dropping of weapons that have an overwhelming blast radius.

Since half of the world are against Israel i think they should finish the job and try to destroy Hamas, if they stop now then in a few years we have another invasion version 5.3 after a few thousand rockets landed on Israel side.

Are there Palestinians we can murder in our modern-day holocaust over there

Yes.

Drop the bombs

It was an ironic joke. I don't give a toss if they do since it won't change anything as we are seeing right now.
