Israel - Palestine Discussion | Post Respectfully | Discuss more, tweet less

Sickens me that people like this will no doubt be allowed back into the UK.

Very depressing to me. The strand of Zionism that I have in the past identified with, that is Labor/Socialist Zionism, seems all but dead and buried in Israel, really only existing in Kibbutzim and what remains of the left in Israel.
Revisionist Zionism like Likud is pure unadulterated evil.

Perhaps Israel hasn't quite yet reached the pariah status that Russia has, but if they continue doing what they are doing in Gaza, the pressure on UEFA surely will see them take similar measures, one would imagine.
No chance. The Germans for starters would riot if the mere suggestion was made, and that's judging by their pathetic apologist stance and using any opportunity to try and absolve them of war crimes. Various other European nations would probably act no differently.

I suppose as a non-European, I didn't realise that Germany still holds such collective guilt, such that this guilt has the tail, on occasion, wagging the dog. I mean it's been almost 90 years since the Nazi regime was dissolved, and I say this as a descendant of Holocaust survivors.
I know they have very strict laws there regarding anti-semitism, but didn't realise they went this far to bat for Israel in international politics.

I also can see the U.K. acting similarly but for different reasons as we have a prominent presence there.

Protests at Israel-Norway match U-19 match

I don't know what can be done about this, barring the end of the what they are doing in Gaza, which may not even be a guarantee.
Couldn't play in in the AFC for obvious reasons, now starting to look like it can't really play matches in UEFA.

Thoughts?

They should be banned from international and European football. It happened to every fecking country engaged in unjust war except for them.

Israel reached Russia's level decades ago. They have been colonizing and occupying Gaza and the WB for 50 years, lets not kid ourselves.

Just listen to this important interview and her talking about Biden breaking not only international law, but also US laws.

Russia looks like a choir boy in comparison.

Israel is a pariah state for all but a few countries in the West. And even some of them wouldn't touch it with a barge pole at the moment. I've never seen Israel so isolated in my lifetime. The US for obvious reasons, and a self-flagellating Germany which confirms once again why it should never play any meaningful role in international matters, are about the last countries that still unconditionally support them. More than enough for Israel to do whatever they want right now, but it will backfire in the coming decades.

You can bet your house that if it was any other country than Israel, you'd see a flurry of condemnations, diplomatic and economic sanctions, and most likely military actions taken against it. A UEFA boycott would be the least of their problems.

The rest of the west supports them as well, less publicly, yes, but support them where it matters and anyway, who cares if you have the US at your side? They don't care what the world thinks about them, even the US if they reach their goal. Their promised land. Even if it means being a pariah. Once the goal is achieved, they will make amends and in decades they will say: " we were horrible! poor Palestinians!" and palestinians will be like the first nations in america. The end

Fair enough. I might still have some unconscious biases as I have some relatives over there and lived there for my gap year after finishing school, when I was a member of a Zionist socialist youth movement.

I also went to a secular Jewish school and had quite a partisan education where we were basically taught that Israel was a benign state and there was very little mention about Israel's treatment of the Palestinian people.
It's been quite a journey for me to unlearn what I was 'taught'.

When you have killed and/or maimed >1% (dead); >5% injured, the world doesn't tend to just forget about it. This is still ongoing and genocide is being confirmed, via convention, at the ICC as well as other supranational forums. Ireland joining SA is not so small as it seems given that government's tendency to not follow public consensus on foreign policy issues. If that snowballs into many states, Israel is in trouble. It doesn't recognize the ICC iirc because it is a war-criminal within its own land and outside that. Like the USA and Russia. Would have to recheck that, though.

SC passing resolution. By themselves, all minor points. Together and continuing to build in dialectic relationship with Israel's behavior on the ground, this really is the most isolated Israel has been in most people's lifetimes. The kicker, for the fanatical Israeli right, is that the Arab League nations are more important in trade and security terms (as a rising bloc of >one billion people inclined, somewhat, to "look west").

Who is not guilty of unconscious bias? We all have it, it's not easy to fight it, but we should.

The SA case that Ireland joined is not in the ICC, it is in the ICJ. Every single member state in the UN is by default a signatory to the ICJ including the USA and Israel. The ICC on the other hand is a criminal court and not all states are signatories to it. But even if they are not signatories that does not prevent the court from persecuting indiviuals from these states.

Perhaps I've missed it or don't remember it anymore, but has Biden actually been questioned on camera about his policy decisions on Israel? The continued arms shipments to Israel? Whether he thinks Israel has violated international humanitarian law?

Thanks, I thought I had that wrong.

Not directly, AFAIK. Jonathan Capehart (MSNBC) lately asked Biden about whether he had a red line about what Israel can do and the latter replied that there's effectively none.

As for the (100 and counting) continuous armed shipments to Israel that are still ongoing to this day and bypassed Congress approval, or the legitimacy and proportionality of Israel's response, whenever asked Tony Blinken, John Kirby, Matthew Miller and Steve Austin have been doing the heavy lifting and his dirty work for months. They continuously lied on record in order to shield him and Israel and will most likely never face consequences for their lies. Everybody knows what's what, but won't lift a finger or push Biden too far. Too much at stake (domestically) in an election year, especially with Trump looming in the background.

Biden is a fossile stuck in a bygone era and a long-time Zionist. He's also one of the biggest beneficiaries of pro-Israel donators, and only angry at Netanyahu right now because the latter's eating away some of his votes with his genocidal behavior. Nothing else.

It's worse than Russia, just has the US defending it, for now...

Biden has not been visible enough for months now. Maybe it’s the age, maybe fatigue, maybe trying to avoid potential confrontations with young people and others who oppose his policy towards Gaza. Maybe all of the above. But, he’s clearly not sufficiently visible. I also believe that the biggest change happened since October.

He’s not the same president anymore. I thought that he had a good presidency until few months ago: good economic bills, infrastructure, helping the economy get out of the covid crisis, helping Ukraine, etc. But, his handling of this crisis has been poor. He looks weak and make America look weak, which I don’t like at all. We should be more firm in our dealings with Israel: if you want our help, you have to listen to us. You can’t get our assistance (financial, military and political) and then say “the U.S. doesn’t decide for us”.

The Ukraine gets our help and shows respect to us. Israel gets help, and shows no respect to us. It’s Biden’s fault, and I say that as voter of his.

See the whole thread.

Good thread. Sadly nothing can be done till the Republican dictator and his lying press secretaries are out, and we get a Democrat in the White House :(
It's existential matters like this that make it so important to vote this November!

I'm sure once Trump loses the election and this existential matter is defused once and for all, it will finally be acceptable to hold Democrats accountable.
