Like them or hate them you can't dismiss them from the process. They're both an ally of Syria and Russia and have plenty of military assets on the ground.
In between antihenry's and Raoul's blustering for each side, I think realistically whatever the US might think of doing, damage to Russian assets is out of the question and Iran avoided if possible. I wouldn't think any action would be coordinated with either of the two, but agree that they limit the scope of the viable/acceptable.
Disagree that attacking Assad and his govt puts you at a state of war with either Russia or Iran, because just like the French wondered if the US would actually "trade" LA or NY for Paris in a hypothetical Cold War nuclear exchange, think here that neither would necessarily look to respond overtly to a US action. Basically think there's a large array of possibilities, and you have to climb pretty far up the range to find acts aggressive and damaging enough that the Russians or Iranians would feel compelled to react overtly.
Other than that... what a horrible mess.
