Is Verratti wasting his career away at PSG? (other stars who avoided big moves...)

He's one of those players who will probably age well in terms of style, doesn't rely too much on pace and athleticism and has the ability to control games and can slow the pace as he ages so he's got years and years ahead of him yet, he'll probably be at Barca within 2-3 seasons I think and then they'll probably get another 8-10 out of him.

@Downcast - firstly did not know you was a PSG fan! secondly.. if he didn't win a CL by age of 26, would he leave? and thirdly where do you think he would go to if he was to leave?

Never too late to know it :) In my opinion, if he didn't win a CL by age of 26, he would leave because:

- As you know, it would be boring to win 6 or 7 consecutive French League titles and be part of one-team league
- Ibra & Lavezzi have left. Motta will leave next year. No Ancelotti. No Leonardo. So, I don't see someone able to retain him apart from the president
- You can't always say NO to clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona & co. Ancelotti rejected many offers from Real Madrid in his career before joining them.
- His child would be 2-3 years old.

2016/17: 5th season with PSG. So, 7 seasons would be enough for him imho.
And I think he deserves to play in a better league and I would always remain one of his biggest fans even if he moves.

1. Why are you numbering your sentences?

Yeah, inappropriate/useless here.

7. Why would PSG sell even after winning the CL?

For his service to the club. If Verratti says 'I joined PSG 7 years ago and need a new challenge', then it won't be impossible.

He's a great talent but he's ridiculously short as a player and must therefore choose his next move wisely. Verratti is 5ft5 which means he's even shorter to Paul Scholes, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi. Its true that some leagues are more forgiving in terms of physicality then others but even they have their limits. For example Giovinco (whom to be fair is even shorter then Verratti) struggled with Juventus.

The only 5ft5 attacking midfielder I can think off who did well nearly everywhere he played was Diego Armando Maradona. There again there's only 1 Maradona.

It's not all about trophies. I personally would rather be a hero at my beloved club and win nothing than collect trophies here and there. Then if you did manage to win your club a trophy, perhaps single handedly, it would be the best thing ever.

Obviously salary should be competetive If you stayed.

PSG are a fine club, they could well get to a CL final within the next 5 years. Plenty of money, Paris, good organization - I don't think it's such a bad place to be at, honestly.

1. It's not a bad habit really.

2. It's easier to read.

3. Bullet points (let's pretend that numbering is very alike to it) are a new fad in modern journalism.
1. Please.

2. Stop.

I always thought he and Pogba would eventually just swap. Two best young midfielders in the world, the star of the Italian national team and the star of the French national team heading to the dominant Italian giant and dominant French giant respectively.

He's only 23, he'll make a move in the next couple of years.

Good question about other players that may have been considered greater had they moved on. Trying to think of some. The cliched English example is le tissier and Gascogne to a point
Possibly Shearer as well?

Did Juninho Pernambucano wasted his career?

Emery is a great Cup coach, if PSG ever have a shot it'll be in the next year or two to succeed in Europe. If not, clubs will line up and I imagine the player will want to provided he has that ambition. Because let's face it, he's probably living a great life in Paris as it is

I am afraid PSG is not going to sell him, so he will need to run down his contract. But he is only 23, so there is plenty of time to fulfill his destiny:

A Pogba-Veratti switch made so much sense and I was sure that it will eventually happen.

Now, I am thinking how cool Veratti would look in a United shirt. A Veratti-Pogba midfield would be the best in the world.

He's 23, he's earning good money and he's winning trophies. Soon enough PSG will be winning trophies in Europe too. Ok the French league is a one horse race. Having said that, so was the EPL during the early 90s.
Suppose same could be said of Bundesliga too. Having said that though, at least there's a slight semblance of competition there whereas the French league it's literally nailed on.

And it is possible, if there is one man that can convince Verratti to leave it's Ibrahimovic.

He'll stick at PSG for another season or two before moving on. Unless there is some serious investment in the French League and/or PSG win a champions league then I can see the buzz around the club starting to fade.

Le Tissier as a shout for player who would have achieved more if he'd moved on.

as competitive or globally-attractive as the PL or La Liga
apart from beeing a two-horse instead of one-horse race (i know, i know, Atletico...temporary phenomenon), i can't see much difference between La Liga and Ligue 1. There is no difference between the likes of Sevilla or Villareal, and the likes of AS Monaco or Lyon. And it doesn't change a bit when you go further down the table.
All this talk about one-horse-racing, bla. I don't think most players care to much about it, as long as they get good salary at their club, and play successful football.

Mahrez potentially.

If he stays at Leicester for the remainder of the contract he has signed and carries on being a great player (tbh it wouldn't totally surprise me if he turns out to be a one season wonder)

Imagine in the next two summers signing Griezmann and Veratti! Our team with those two additions and assuming that young players will develop there, would be a serious contender for UCL.

Would PSG be willing to sell though? He's so good, letting him go with their current ambitions would be terrible for them, unless of course he demands to leave.

It's not happening, only one can be bought. They both cost +100m€

We might see Pogba at PSG at some point but I don't see how Juventus will be able to afford Verratti for the next 5-8 years unless he pushes for a move. They should have bought him from Pescara.

I said on the next two summers. Griezmann next summer, and then Veratti on the following one.

I know and I said that it's not going to happen. I'm fairly sure that we are not going to break 3 world records in 3 summers.

Sorry, I saw that post after I had posted. He was the complete CF, wasn't he.

We can admit that safely now, decades on. Of course on the one hand we signed Yorke in 98 and can have no regrets but had we signed shearer in 95 or so he'd have become a legend here

No, absolutely not. It's not a prerequisite for a successful career to have spent the bulk of it at the top 1-3 clubs in the world (and PSG are at worst a top 4-8 club). I don't think anyone considers Francesco Totti or Steven Gerrard lesser players for staying put. They've still proven themselves at the highest level, be it in the Champions League, international tournaments or through being tremendously influential in the league.

I'll extend that point further and suggest that I don't think the likes of Henrik Larsson or Brian Laudrup 'wasted their career' by staying in the relative crappiness of the SPL through their peak years. They proved themselves as top calibre not just by performing domestically, but by tearing it up in international tournaments and in European competition.

Or you could spin the point again and question whether Diego Maradona wasted his career at Napoli when he could have been playing for one of the Serie A giants. It never hurt his standing either.

Did Juninho Pernambucano wasted his career?

One is a 'secondary Brazilian player' while the other one is expected to be definitely THE boss of Italy (he was injured in the last 6 months)

Get down of your high pony, Juninho was a great player.:smirk:

He's short, would fit perfectly along with rest of our short players. Imagine a team photo where everyone else is way taller than he is. He should seriously take that into consideration :)

LOL at people not treating PSG as a genuine powerhouse.

Sure, Ligue 1 is a one horse race and lacks competitiveness but you could say the same about the Bundesliga, albeit there's a higher standard throughout.
The fact is PSG pay big bucks, have a favourable location, will be a CL contender for the forseeable future and WILL be an attractive destination for a very high % of the world's best players.

Yep, that gap is 3 more titles won by Juninho and about 200 more goals scored.

I prefer to compare Beckenbauer with Pelé as far as I'm concerned. :)

Where is Juninho (27 years in 2002) this day?
