Is the European super league back? | United Statement: We remain committed to UEFA

I’m not sure how many Clearlake fanboys we had here. I know some very specific Chelsea fans, or one in particular, was a staunch advocate for the ownership. Chelsea fans in general are way more critical of the owners than rivals are.
Nah, the first summer after the takeover and that first year, there was massive goodwill for the way they were conducting themselves and for Boehly in particular. It's cooled down a bit this season.

I wondered why Chelsea hadn’t released a statement like some other clubs, and I guess we now know why. Sigh :(

I’m not being funny but does he actually know what event prompted the overnight exodus of the last SL?

By guaranteeing three clubs would be promoted to it each season, leading to 50 different clubs playing in the premier league so far, in 30 years.

I mean, this is pretty much a similar model no? You don’t get to play in the PL by winning the third division…you are promoted to the second division and from there you can try for the PL. Same for the relegation.

Unless the argument is that winners / top 4 or whatever should immediately be promoted to the highest level. Which I covered in one of my previous posts.

Oh yeah that’s true, but I guess that’s also understandable. It’s a new ownership. There will be obvious goodwill towards people that haven’t done anything wrong or questionable yet and I think that’s fair enough. That first summer spending alone wasn’t alarm raising. It is in hindsight but at the time, the amount spent that summer was in line with previous years under Abramovich. It’s what followed in the 18 months since that’s been an utter disaster and the Chelsea fans have slowly soured on them in that time.

You mean the thousands of Chelsea fans protesting outside the Bridge? Probably not but I’m sure he’s going to find out if he co-signs with the ESL.

If a smaller club wins their domestic league, let's say Braga in Portugal, instead of having their dream story and their day in the sun playing against the top leagues in the world, they will play in the blue league with zero chance of playing the big boys, which will instead buy all their good players making sure they have zero chance of ever reaching the gold league.

It's a fecked up system that goes against what football has been since its inception.

It's honestly kind of impressive that they came up with a proposal that a 5 year old could have told them would never be accepted, had 2 years to sit on working on something palatable and STILL managed to fail the "would a 5 year old thinks this would work" test

Just a question.

Why should Barcelona go before Girona? Or Chelsea before Brighton? Are we talking about sporting merits or something else?

Everybody knows what this is about.

According to the BBC United and Chelsea have come out and said they have no interest in joining a super league.
The reporter says it's the clubs from La Liga that want it most, as they want some of EPL cake.

The lure for the fans is the promise of free streaming of every game, in other words, massive amounts of advertising.

Who wants to see the same old big teams circle jerking on their wads of cash every season?

Domestic rivalries is where it's at, Geebs. Playing the likes Real, Juve and PSV every week just doesn't have the same appeal. We're not rivals. I feel nothing for them.

Todd Boehly held an hour long call with Florentino Perez which involved discussion of a joining bonus for Chelsea similar to the ones Barcalona and Real Madrid will receive from A22

so much to feast on in this

And Super league will be much better?

At this stage, i can’t imagine how it can be any worse than the current situation with UEFA and FIFA behind the wheel. The only thing down the road is FIFA including more and more games to increase their revenue, like their revamped club world cup, more national team matches. Same with UEFA.

Nah, the first summer after the takeover and that first year, there was massive goodwill for the way they were conducting themselves and for Boehly in particular. It's cooled down a bit this season.

It’s cooled down because they haven’t had much success yet, quite the opposite.

It's hardly surprising, and it makes the lot of you Chelsea fans that were staunchly defending Boehly and his approach to revolutionising football in the PL look a bit idiotic. He doesn't understand football, he's a businessman, which is what was apparent from day 1 despite his pamphlet to fans carefully curated by consultant.

Also, just FYI.

@WeePat, yeah, nice to see Chelsea reject Super League.

Same for City

I hope all major English clubs (ours included) firmly reject this garbage pushed by Feck-entino Pérez and Laporta. They can play with PSG and Juve in a traveling circus league if they want.

Sounds like there will be some kind of loyalty bonus for RM and Barca for never leaving ESL.

You can check in anytime you like, but you can never leave.

Short term it’s not viable for any English clubs to join in, so it’s hardly a surprise that everyone is opting for the same line. A different tune is being played behind doors.

Those clubs get bought out now. Leicester, Monaco, you name it. Any club that does well for even one season lose their players. Nothing changes in that regard and should not be an argument.

The ESL is however indeed a harder system in that regard and I wonder if they’ll adjust anything to it (like a playoff for the Bragas of the world) to immediately join the Star league. Looks more like an American model and football is one of those games people are incredibly against every minor change. Let alone a big one like this.

Money and hey it’s not me proposing this league. Papa Perez wants it  I’m just looking at ways where this could work rather than the meaningless ‘I won’t watch!’ posts.

The sporting merit is still there, but it is indeed much harder for the smaller clubs as they would need to be consistently good across a season or two or maybe even three to make it. Whilst more forgiving to bigger clubs who could have a poor season.

A super league will eventually happen and im all for it. Fifa and Uefa has been ran by corrupted fecks for decades.

I cant understand fans standing behind the elitist corrupted cult. Wasnt the Qatari world cup enough of a wake up call?

I don't want the Superleague, but I also don't want the current model with the excessive wealth inequality relegating all but a handful of clubs across Europe into glorified feeder club status. We should be rejecting both concepts as fans.

I miss the early CL era, mid 90's to early 00's, a proper open contest with a wide range of styles and footballing cultures able to compete on a closer footing, memorable teams, games, players, moments.

What we have now is stale, no wonder so much of fandom has moved to following individuals over teams.

That’s ….. that’s the ESL?

I'm absolutely baffled by the way most media interpreted this morning's decision. It's FAR from the blow that is currently discussed from a legal standpoint.

What the decision basically says it that it's not impossible for FIFA/UEFA to have control over football competitions, but it's not possible to have it the way UEFA and FIFA did in 2021. UEFA knew that, that's why they changed its rules in 2022.

There's nothing definitive about this ruling, it still maintains a huge legal uncertainty that is likely to prevent investors from pouring billions they might loose.

This thread might enlight some :

Bottom line.
If they can't sanction or punish a team for joining a competing competition. They literally can't stop it existing let alone governing itself whilst using all the game rules. Talk of E.U. openning pandorra's box.

It’ll be like the LIV golf farce, once the money gets too much all the players who stayed with PGA on principles gave in and moved, same will happen here especially if the ESL can get a wealthy backer like PIF.

You are privy to conversations behind those doors?

It will be hard / embarrassing for City and Chelsea to walk back the very strongly-worded statements, any time soon. Also, to be fair - both of these clubs have abundance of money and it's understandable why their owners don't care about some joke competition that is only attractive for money.

Our owners, however...

Wait what? Is it your interpretation of "the idea of a pre-authorisation system (to approve/block rival events) and sanction clubs/people is fine. It just needs to be tempered by a predictable / fair framework." ?

The ruling essentially amounts to "the existing framework cam't be enforced" . UEFA/the FAs cannot sanction teams for playing in the SL. Nor can they exclude them from their own competitions on that basis, if reports I've heard are correct

Why would he? He’s well aware of the current political climate in England regarding the super league. If anything, he’ll have hopes of creating a competition that will eventually have clubs from England. Nothing whatsoever suggests he’s banking on them from day one given what happened to begin with

That seems to be the interpretation of that Tweet, but going by the image attached, specifically number 144: unless I’m mistaken, it doesn’t say that UEFA/FIFA need to be the the (only) governing body? Just states that the organisation and competition should be subject to common rule. But maybe there is a reference to another portion of the ruling that does state this.

The whole point of the superleague is cashing in off the premier league's back. thats why it broke down

The point is Leicester and Monaco got to compete in the Champions League (as they should, seeing as they were Champions) the following season with players they retained (such as Vardy) and with the windfall from players sales. In the ESL, they would still be two winning seasons away from the top tier because the ESL is designed to diminish the importance of domestic leagues.

I can’t tell if people ignoring this are trolling or not.

That is literally the second part of my post you have gone through the trouble of removing from the quote…..
