Is Sterling the best english player at the moment?

Train wreck of a season. Southgate will still start him this summer though, and it will hurt us.

He's had a bad season by his standards and looked atrocious the last couple of months but he's been involved in 24 goals in 42 games this season (13 goals and 11 assists) hardly a train wreck.

Still a great player. No matter what people say, they can't rewrite how good he is. Not sure why there is this weird agenda against him on Redcafe and why he's singled out over any other City player. Not a single word on Gabriel Jesus who had a free run at the number 9 role but is less preferred over players who aren't strikers.

The guy is a boyhood United fan as well. Went to one of our FA Cup finals.

I think its because he's very much a feast or famine player. He's either World Class or he's Bebe, you don't get any in between, his highs are above most and his lows far below most. Right now he's at his worst form since coming to City, Foden taking his spot has lumped pressure on him and it looks like he's wilting instead of rising up and taking it back. Today was legit the worst I've seen him in any shirt ever.

Everything is relative, and by his standards its a train wreck. Even found himself out of favour plenty of times. Also, numbers are still good of course, but he's playing in an incredible team for a GOAT standard coach.

Worst form of his life. You just know he’s going to be one of the first names on the team sheet at the Euros, though.

To a point, I think his response to being dropped has been a train wreck but for example he's outscored Mahrez (13-11 goals) and out assisted him (11-8) this season and people say Mahrez is having his best season since Leicester won the title. It's all relative I suppose to their previous reputations but just seems a bit hyperbolic to me when people say his season as a whole has been a disaster, last 6 weeks 100% disaster though.

Because nobody fecking rates Jesus - he's like the 00s version of Chelsea's Solomon Kalou. Everyone in England has been raving about Sterling being this amazing player just behind Messi and Ronaldo as the 3rd best player in the world less than 2 years ago and it was funnier then and it's even more funnier now.
Also what does him being a Utd fan have to do with anything? He's been nothing more than a pace merchant with awkward dribbling skills and horrendous finishing.

thread title above, seems you were talking about who should play right wing for England, although no-one was quoted so tough to understand.

Grealish has better stats this season in a much worse and lower scoring side so bullshit has Foden has a better season. Grealish is currently a much more proven and superior player.

Well said.

Foden is brilliant but the current love in nauseating!

Better than Grealish and Rashford

Yeah that’s bollocks unless you spend your free time reading the bottom of the barrel sources. Nobody ever rated him over Mbappe or Neymar.

The United point was about how weird it is this forum goes out of its way to obsess about Sterling. This is RAWK mentality stuff.

He’s having a poor season by his standards but he’s still a very good player.

Honestly think on this seasons form he shouldn't be selected for the Euros.

Man City fan banging on about his goals and assists, hes playing for City he will get decent numerous. However he cant beat players these days or just refuses to try to and his passing is pathetic.

Agreed.

It should be
Rice - Mount
Foden - Grealish - Rashford
Kane

Yeah that's fair.

Thing for me is he simply isn't a reliable finisher despite the numbers he produces during seasons. Put him in the Spurs team and he wouldn't be racking up Son figures imo as he hestitates too much on one on ones and often makes the wrong choice.

That's a problem for England as the knock out games will be tight with clear cut chances in open play at a minimum so not sure who you'd want the chances to fall to if Kane isn't around.

He’s always been overrated as hell. Benefitted hugely from player under Pep at city. Someone earlier saying Greenwood wouldn’t play for city yet he’s twice the talent at the same age.

That would be very good.

They are all players who seem to have a great mentality and won't wilt under pressure.

Kane probably at the minute for me. Since AWB has put Sterling in his pocket he hasn't been the same.

His goal output and assists are generally really good but I always feel City could upgrade on him and let him be more of a squad player. Gets knocked about and out-muscled by right backs that can match his speed like AWB and James. James pretty much had him in his pocket tonight.

I think they backed the wrong horse. I would've kept Sane instead.

Though Ferran Torres looks promising for them

He should drop right down the pecking order for England. Rashford, Grealish, Foden, and probably Mount (though he doesn't play there) would all be better than him.

Nothing about Sterling's season suggested he should be starting a CL final.

James did an AWB on him today. Not sure what made Pep start him, his form hasn’t been great, pretty sure he didn’t start in the semis & I think his inclusion lead to the imbalance in their midfield at the expense of the CDM.

What has happened to him this season? Going off his prior years I was always a bit suspicious about him suddenly hitting the target and scoring all these goals. Seemed to be benefiting from Pep's previous system and incredible psychology than being one of the best players.

It was the good and bad of Sterling today. He showed why he was included with his runs but wasted the ball in good positions a lot. Full credit to him for the goal. Hopefully that will give him confidence.
