Iran v US confrontation

It's obvious they've been in bed behind the scenes for a while now, the Saudis opened up their air space for flights to Israel recently, I think slowly and with baby steps the relationship will begin to normalise.

I think it's pretty obvious the Saudis couldn't give a feck about Palestinians, if they could they would normalise relations with Israel tomorrow.

I didn't want to go in depth on how strong their relationship it is (though everything indicates that never had been better). What I am saying is that they don't need Trump to "pull one off better" . A common enemy like Iran can help for example

I don't think diplomatic relations with an Arab country are anything controversial in Israel. Netanyahu boasts about it at every opportunity to raise his political profile. These dealings are an open secret, and it's Saudi Arabia that needs to keep up appearances, even if no one actually believes it.
Well, in that case... that’s just great. Trump will get his coalition of the willing and we will have an awful mess on our hands in the Persian Gulf again.

So, there's an Evangelical in the White House and Iran probably has a few dirty bombs kicking around.

Who's up for the reality TV production of the book of Revelations, then?

The Americans and Israelis have been saying the Iranians have a dirty bomb for about 30 years now, I doubt they have one or even want one if I'm honest.

This is such a clusterfeck. Guess its been a little too long for some Americans since their last war....

I doubt so. He won't get close to a Bush Senior type coalition for any of his shenanigans there especially after starting his stupid trade wars (and costing many friendly countries some financial pain.)

I don’t think he will either, for what it’s worth. That post is just me responding to folks saying I’m wrong for thinking that he won’t pull a GHW Bush.

Everybody keeps repeating that Iran is very powerful. In which sense? how powerful is his army to claim that "power"?

Also about reliable allies. If US would invade with Israel and SA backing up, do you think China or Russia would face US + allies in an open war?
Yes, they would presumably back Iran if we invaded.

He'll be banking of Putin to help him out. He only true friend.

The Partnership of the Powerful.

Damn, it is starting to sound a bit like 2002 & the lead up to the unnecessary war in Iraq. I hold the Bush 2.0 in such a higher regard than the current regime in office. To think that these mensas in office right now could take us into another Middle Eastern war with no true political sense than an idiot as the National Security Advisor in Bolton is shocking to the core. This asshat cnut was part of the cabal that got us into the wonderfully successful Iraq jaunt in the 00s, I’ll be damned if he gets us into an eminently less-successful foray into Iran in the 20s.

Ya they're definitely building a case online.

Yeah, it's getting worrying now. Despite a British General on the ground saying there's no extraordinary threat the Americans are coming out saying there is and they're pulling staff out of Iraq in readiness. They're cranking up the rhetoric to get people on side, just like they always do.

Wtf is it with American presidents wanting a war to stamp their names on?

Don’t ever discount the fact that peace is hell, that the defense contractors need real-time arenas to show how improved their weaponry has become, & that the KBRs / Halliburtons / Carlyle Groups have not been making their billions in profits through no-bid contracts like they did in Iraq & Afghanistan.

I don’t believe that we would go into Iran for the oil, it’s just not that much of a necessity for my country, it will be the internal pressure from the entities listed above that will get us embroiled into conflict with Iran. To think we could ‘invade’ a country multiple times bigger than Iraq & multiple times more mountainous than Iraq with the same number of troops is as idiotic as can be. The leaps in quality & force projection of military weaponry from 2003 to now were not as substantial as they were from 1991 to 2003, plus we will be going up against a far more impressive military force.

I am just waiting for the big lie to start being spread. We might be looking at the Gulf of Tonkin incident 2.0 as a pretext for some military intervention into Iran, but it won’t be enough to rally the country behind it. There’s always the GWOT bandwagon to rally Americans behind, but that rings a little stale nowadays. Some lie needs to be cooked up pretty soon to get the drumbeats growing louder.

I want to think that there are smart men & women in uniform & in the intelligence services that will stop the march to war, especially under such a horrific & incompetent president, but I thought the same in 2002.

Trump really wants to be first in everything, even snatching the worst president ever trophy away from Dubya.

Trump is going to kill Iranians and get Americans killed, all to distract from his finances and the Mueller report/testimony. Course, this will be advice from Putin as well. Just cannot believe Trump is so idiotic!

It’s even more idiotic that people are going along with this. He and the WH staff are evil.

Another thing, the world needs to kill its dependency on the dollar sharpish.

If anything does happen .I hope we will not get involved or any other European country. This is Americas mess or more Trump's mess.

A superpower + a crazy man in charge. feck all of you feckers that bashed Hillary or the "they're both the same crowd". feck all of you double digit Bernie or bust voters who didn't vote for Hillary when it was down to her and Trump. Idiots. She was a damn capable politician that had flaws a lot of politicians have. You chose a dumb loon instead.

The average redneck around here though thinks it'll be a cakewalk. It's so depressing.

I thought Iran had so much air defences that you'd have to have a pretty significant land invasion with lots and lots of american deaths making the entire idea a non starter?

Cruise missiles and drone strikes negate the need for traditional air power in the theatre.

First steps of mobilization. US will use Iraq as a base to wage war vs. Iran.
Looking at the geography of that, that kind of military operation would be ridiculously daunting. As flat desert as Iraq is, the entire borderland between Iraq and Iran is a mountain range.

The invasion would have to be almost completely airborne and largely without armor until airbases and airspace had been secured.

Yep. Lots of SAMs will be used, plus drones and Cruise missiles as noted. They're likely going to try and bomb Iran back to the Stone age, then invade.

Far more likely to be targeted strikes at nuclear facilities rather than a conventional invasion.
