Ipswich Town | Can they stay up?

I don't think they can stay up. That was such a weird game - Ipswich actually moved the ball about really well, but then as soon as they had an opening they had nothing to actually threaten Liverpool with. Not enough pace, passing wasn't incisive enough and worryingly for them they looked like no threat from set pieces too.

I was looking at the two teams yesterday, the thing that struck out to me was how much bigger the Liverpool team looked. Ipswich look too small - they won't have much luck from set pieces and I don't think they'll have a reliable way of getting a goal.

I looked at their squad because of your post. They have three centre and two midfielders who are 6' 2" or taller. Even up front, they have a few who are 6' 1" or thereabouts.

I didn't watch the Liverpool match, but I would assume that Liverpool were better technically, physically, tactically, psychologically. This is still a League One team that is bolstered by loans and opportunistic signings relatively late in the window. If McKenna keeps them up he'll be Manager of the Year.

Maybe because they were very competitive against Liverpool in that first half.

They should have signed a lot of players on cheap from eastern europe, south america and africa, current unknown gems and future stars on cheap if they wanted to have future. They have not. So I think they fecked up and will pay for it

If they go down, we should send a cheeky 25 mil for Omari Hutchinson.

I actually think they've conducted their business very well. The expectations on them are to be relegated, no question. They've signed players on loan like Phillips and Johnson who will add PL experience but they're also assembling a team with practically the best young Championship players last season outside of Leeds and Leicester. Some good forward planning and safeguarding there and expect them to bounce a straight back up the season after with this squad if they do get relegated.

They were by far the better team in the first half. Pressed so well forcing Pool into long balls, almost scored with a header that Allison fluffed, had a great break with Hutchinson which he should've done better with.
Still not sure if they will stay up, but I think from the 3 promoted they have the best chance.

Captain Obvious time, but it's such a different job for McKenna this season compared to the previous two.

A very different skillset needed to be managing a team at the top of the table than is what is likely to happen this. Granted, Ipswich weren't expected to be right up there last season either by many ahead of time but were in the end and it's safe to say it won't be happening this. Uncharted waters for him.

Might be extreme to say it, but in some ways Maresca has a less different task this year than he did last compared to what McKenna is facing.

McKenna doesn't necessarily have to change style of play, we've seen sides come up and do well when sticking to what they're good at. We've also seen them hopelessly flop. It can go both ways, as can trying to be more defensive. There's likely to be times whether he's pondering whether he should or shouldn't and it must be difficult for any newly promoted manager to decide the best course of action at different points in the season.

They really need some points from these type of fixtures, as I don’t see them getting many against top teams.

I wouldn't be too disheartened. They've played 3 of the likely top 6 already, probably 2 of the top 3 and banked 3 points overall. Leicester and Southampton have still got to play a really top team and Everton and Wolves are trying their best to stay at the bottom. Results elsewhere are going their way if their own results aren't.

Yeah but that’s not enough if they don’t get some wins and points against the bottom half teams.

Not saying they’ve done bad but just see these head-to-head matches pretty crucial. So I’d say Morsy’s goal was very important for them.

Yeah I agree they need that win but of the promoted sides they are faring better than the other two so far I feel. Both Leicester and Southampton have got Arsenal away on their next up coming games. Ipswich could pull away of they can beat Villa at home but I doubt it.

Good point against Villa. And above all a performance that should give them some confidence going forward.

Do they have what it takes to stay up?

They haven't won a match but their first 2 were against City and Liverpool. However they're unbeaten in 4 so they're not easy to win against.

Still feel like they will be a Luton. Really difficult to beat at home but just won't win enough games.

Restricted Villa to their lowest xG of the season so far, and was simutaneously the best defensive showing in that respect for Ipswich.

Good show.

Nowhere to watch the game, but from the match stats, they did wonderfully, right? 15 shots 7 on target, almost doubling what Aston Villa produced!

I thought we banned AI generated posts?

Outplayed Villa with shoestring budget. McKenna is going to do the miracle making Ipswich stay in PL next season. Come to Man Utd next year!

What a goal from Davis. They need to win these games, so it could be a big one.

Kalvin Phillips sent off for a second yellow and Leicester equalise in the 96th minute.

Deserved they’ve had some bad luck in games they could’ve won. Been very competitive in most games this season.

The kind of week that makes you think they won't ultimately stay up, especially if you contrast it with Leicester.

Home defeat to Palace who just had too much for them, then leading late on v Bournemouth only to succumb to them in the end. Deserved win for Bournemouth, but so close to getting something and to lead for so long only to lose has to hurt.

Meanwhile Leicester find a way to win v West Ham while coughing up as many chances as Ipswich did v Bournemouth and come back from the dead late vs. Brighton.

They were opposites of each other almost.

Two promotions in a row would always been too much. They're not picking up enough 'bad points' either.

Muric is costing them so many points just like he did with Burnley last season.

Did he really need to come out for the first goal yesterday? Given he did he needs to be getting the ball but just stood there as it was played past him.

Not sure the risk and reward is worth it with him but the keepers they came up with probably weren't prem standard.

Well done to Kieran. Shame about loss to Bournemouth last week but first win at home will come at some point. They host Newcastle next weekend and wouldn't be too bad if they win that one.

They can stay up. I was really impressed with them against us. McKenna is a quality coach. It will be one hell of a struggle for them to survive though. There's only one or two sides above them who they can realistically finish ahead of.
