IPL 2019

Archer might just make it to the WC squad.. but my word he is an absolutely rubbish fielder.

He's a great little player, opens for Worcestershire.

I do think a few of the England boys get let down a bit by where they are asked to bat in the IPL. I think they look at where they're batting for England and think that's where they should bat, and if you've got Bairstow and Buttler levels of talent in front of them then fair enough (although why buy them?) but Mooen and Stokes are both top order batsman. 4 is a much better place for Mooen, and I can't for the life of my work out why Stokes was batting at 6 and being asked to bowl at the death before he was dropped.
Yeah agree about Stokes completely. He should be batting three in the RR side and given time to build an innings. He's not a slogger at all.

Also, as you say, should never be a death bowler as he doesn't have the composure.

Although he hasn't exactly just helped with that opinion.

I think the problem is both of them in the same team really. Rahane just is not a T20 player for my money (knock the other day notwithstanding) and Smith (and Tripathi) are also accumulators rather than outright hitters. 1 of those 3 (2 at an absolute push) in the side would give you Buttler, Smith(Tripathi), Samson, Stokes (who has not had a terrible tournament with the bat despite received wisdom; he just hasn't faced enough balls) is a more destructive top 4.

There's quite a lot of reliance on Gowtham and Gopal to finish though (unless you play Turner and drop Smith for Tripathi, although he's a wild card) but that's a question of why they bought the players they did.

Hardly matters though, they're losing half their squad in a week.

He's been awful.

Edit: 106 runs in 7 innings and 6 wickets @ 11.22 econ.

You seem not to have read the brackets?

' has not had a terrible tournament with the bat'

No doubt he hasn't bowled well (again though, Im baffled why he's being asked to bowl at the death), but he's only faced 81 balls in the entire tournament, and although his strike rate and average aren't amazing, they are fine. He's a top order player, rather than a Russell type player, but he's coming in too low and being asked to hit from ball one. It's not his game.

I think for the price he was purchased at, you'd expect more. His best innings was at number 6. He's had ample time in the recent games to build an innings but both times (today and against CSK), he's failed.

Yeah, no doubt, but he's not batted that badly to suggest that he's horrifically out of nick, so I think it's worth preserving with getting him up the order.

Don't disagree with you either about Stokes. I wouldn't have paid the money they did for him, and he wouldn't be in my top four foreign players if I was building a dream IPL side, but once you have you might as well play him in his best role. I can only think of Buttler amongst the RR batsmen who are more destructive than Stokes in full flow.

Their biggest issue is the lack of good Indian players. Rahane is the only one to have played for India - that's really bad.

Well quite, and Rahane is a player – like Boycott in ODIs – that people will look back on in twenty years time and be baffled that he represented his country in this format. Needs to adapt, and quickly, to the scoring rate of modern T20 cricket.

I have to say - there are good commentators and bad commentators - but KP comes across as a terrible human being.

Seems like a bully - always effusive about the well established legends, and viciously critical of what he perceives as weaker players.

It's not hard to see why he got chucked out of the team.

I don't think the selectors did anything wrong by leaving Pant out.

He just doesn't seem to have a mid-range tempo to his game.

Delhi collapse again?

Surely not..

E: Iyer just about holds his nerve.

This is exactly why Pant has been left out the WC squad, he has one way of playing and totally disregards the match situation. Delhi have had 4/5 matches where they’re cruising in a chase and Pant just gave his wicket away. Had he been there at the end in 3/4 of those matches he would’ve hugely increased his chances of WC selection. Does himself no favours at all.

So my local team KKR lost by 9 wickets and Manchester United is losing 3-0 . This Sunday can't get any worse

Because they've got loads of pace and it's a slow, low pitch. Their bowlers just come onto the bat and you can smash them. They should have brought in another spinner instead of Morris.

Morris has played well over the years in the IPL though, both with ball and bat, so I can understand why they stayed with him.

Steyn not getting picked up in the auction is classic IPL management.

To be fair he has been poor in previous IPL seasons. Think teams were burnt by him one too many times and didn't feel that the investment was worth it. Clearly, Steyn is motivated now and is showing his ability.

He's the most dangerous player you've got though. Crazy not to pick him imo.

His base price was pretty low though, his T20 record is great, and he's one of the ATG fast bowlers.

Definitely worth a gamble from someone.

He’d be a wild card for sure. On his day he’d destroy any attack, the question is when will it be his day? He’s a 2 in 5 five player for me, he’d be a match winner in a group game then do something stupid in a knockout game. You need consistent, reliable players to win tournaments

Umesh Yadav.. thank god this man is not in our 15

What an anti climax of run out to one crazy finish . Never thought it would end like that .

IPL is the greatest thing in the world. Holy shit.

didnt see the match but saw the cricinfo ball-by-ball. what happened in the 19th over? was the bowling good and so dhoni wasnt hitting them, or was he just waiting for the last over?

He was horrible choice for the final over. His record at death is terrible. Kohli has simply given up on captaincy for RCB. He did not come once to talk to Yadav about any plans.

Hats off to Dhoni as well, that last over onslaught was absurd.

The only fast bowler in the world whose stock ball is a full ball on leg stump

Smashed it to the boundary but refused singles despite having Bravo on the other end.

Navdeep Saini looks like a class bowler btw.
