Lalit Modi, the Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman has been suspended over allegations of corruption in the lucrative Twenty20 competition.

Shashank Manohar, the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said the governing body had made the decision because Modi’s “alleged acts of individual misdemeanors had brought a bad name to the administration of cricket and the game itself.” The BCCI suspend Modi ahead of today’s meeting of its governing council.

Indian lawmakers have demanded a parliamentary inquiry into claims that IPL clubs had been sold for millions of dollars without accounting for the source of the funds. Manohar said in a statement that Modi had been given 15 days to show why “disciplinary action should not be taken against him”.

Modi was earlier asked by the BCCI to attend the IPL governing council meeting, but he was adamant that the meeting be deferred to May 1 and that he alone was empowered to call for such a meeting.

Modi altered his stance yesterday and said he would chair the IPL governing council meeting and discuss all allegations against him. He demanded that the charges be made in writing and with proof, which prompted the BCCI to suspend him immediately after the IPL final on Sunday night.

The controversy has heightened amid investigations by income tax officials involving the accounts of the Indian cricket board and the IPL teams. Pranab Mukherjee, the Federal Finance Minister, said income tax authorities were examining the sources and channels of funding of the IPL team owners.

The controversy erupted after Modi revealed details about the owners of a club that are set to join an expanded 10-team league next season. A quarter of the team was given to a group that included a friend of India’s junior Foreign Minister, Shashi Tharoor.

Tharoor, a former United Nations diplomat, resigned amid allegations of corruption in the bidding for a team at the auction last month, when a group made a successful bid of more than $330 million (£213 million) for the Kochi franchise.

Tharoor said he did help put together the winning investment group, but only because he wanted to bring a team to the state of Kerala, part of which he represents in Parliament.

Although I don't really follow cricket, I'm actually thrilled that India can produce one of the best leagues in the world.

Yes, corruption was an issue but it isn't as bad as you think. It hardly brought the credibility of the results into question.

Same for me, I find it quite odd that Indians want it to fail so badly.

If we put trucks of money into a proper sport like football rather than this cheap baseball knockoff I'd love it.

This 'sport' is ruining every single other sport in the country.

What a ridiculous argument. No government body is 'putting' money into it. Its a self sustaining commercial enterprise which won't work with any other sport due to the number of eyeballs the game attracts here.

Cheap baseball knock off? I don't like cricket much either. but to devalue the sport is just plain stupid. Also, baseball is an imitation of cricket and not the other way round.

You'll cream over the premier league and the NBA, but an Indian produced product of equal caliber is derided?
