Injury Crisis 2023/24 | Martínez and Casemiro back in training

I knew someone would bring up Spurs, or whatever flavour of the month team happen to have won two or three of their last games....

Where did Brighton finish last season? 8th?

Spurs have beaten Sheffield Utd, Bournemouth, Burnley and a struggling United this season. Yeah they look organised and 'together' but the standards United are held against are infinitely higher than Spurs or Brighton.

Lest we forget, last season we qualified for the Champions League and won a trophy, off the back of a 7th-placed finish and a dressing room seemingly divided down the middle.

If Spurs or Brighton win something, or qualify for the Champions League two or three seasons running, then I'll be impressed.

So far this season we've been on the wrong end of terrible variance. From the moment we got fortunate in the Wolves game, everything that could go wrong has gone wrong. I mean, three of our last four goals have been disallowed by VAR, we've had clear penalties not given, soft penalties given against us, scandals and a ridiculous injury list.

As ETH said, if we talk about this, people say its 'excuses'...its not 'excuses', its simple variance. Sometimes when it rains it pours, sometimes you get an extended spell of good luck. But again, this is why 'time' is important. We might get to May and Spurs could be 6th and United could be 3rd/4th and have a trophy in the bag...its just far too early to be making judgements about anything

Good post, agree 100%

The lazy fan and pundit analysis of our injury crisis is “everyone gets injuries so get on with it.” But when you break it down to see so many of our key players injured/unfit (on top of the non injury right wing debacle), we have been extremely unlucky with the pool of players we’ve been able to start and rotate so far this season. It must be having a detrimental effect on the team as a functional unit.

At the top levels 1% can be the difference between success and failure. I remember a friend who works in a job where he gets to meet managers and players (his company is a massive sponcor).

He asked what seperated Championship and EPL players and they said quite often it is tiny differences, a few percent that can be the difference between being a top EPL player and a good Championship player. Application, mental strength, physical ableness and drive seem like some of the qualitys.

But then you look at United at the moment, the percentages making it harder before we even train or get on the pitch and we are looking for a team who would be expecting/wanting to be challanging for top honors (and kick on from last season) to handle:

- Less then ideal pre season preperation (even Ericson mentioned it)
- Savage injuries
- Disruptions in games that cost us our entire defence
- Players in trouble for non footballing reasons
- Players we dont want who wont leave (how are they affecting dressingroom ?)
- Players attacking the manager online when they are told they are not training enough (player with history of this issue)
- Relying on youth or squad players (johnny evans, Reguilon etc) to just come into the squad without any disruption (we should still be able to play our game)
- Manager trying different things to address these issues
- No fit striker at the club, our manager has never had a regular quality starting striker
- No real options on bench to change things when things havent been going well ("just make a sub", looks at sub becnh and theres nothing there that will dramatically change a game!)
- Owners f**king around with the sale of the club which we dont know what affect its having to general stability of things (if you are a top player, how do you feel about this FFP limit and uncertainty, do you think it hinders Uniteds chances ?)

Ah but sure, isnt all this just an excuse ? None of this Pep or Klopp has to deal with , yet some of you think none of its relevant and we should just be beating Burnley cause we have players who on paper should be able to just click. Some of these issues would unsettle squads/teams, I think it would be a miracle if we were comfortably winning any games while all this is going on.

Incidentally the goal VAR decisions , while correct, were absolutely massive. The Subs of our entire CB against Arsenal was massive. These were potentially game defining moments where the momentumn of the games were in the balance. Nothing our manager has done deserved that.

And thats how it goes , sometimes when times are tough, the margins for error (and bad luck) are so small that you get punished badly.

I think if we get a full squad and we can find our feet we should see a completely different team.

Yeah the old retired pros like to come out with that one.

Completely forgetting the times they were knocked out of tournaments because one or two were missing.

It's a bit of a faux alpha thing to trot out "no excuses" or "you make your own luck."

The alternative would require too much from them lazy cnuts. It would need a statiscal breakdown of injuries per club, per gravity etc etc... They don't have time for that

ETH cant win with some of you.

He gets grief if fans think he’s playing players who don’t deserve it , now he’s getting grief for a player who most definitely doesn’t deserve to start or be in the squad with the deplorable toxic egotistical attitude he’s shown.

We want higher standards at the club. Why would we lower the standards now for a short term injury problem ?

I swear some fans can only see as far as a few days/weeks in a season.

ETH has won me over Sancho since he came, but the idea is that he should at least give him a shot especially now when we are short on numbers and we have no right wingers.
It's far easier to show your muscles and high standards when you are on top of the World and it's much harder in our situation.

You either have standards or you don’t, playing him now would make him look pathetic

Or that he can compromise for the betterment of the squad if it turns out successful. Communication doesn’t always mean weakness.

The wheels fell off Arsenal's title challenge as soon as Saliba got injured...some of these teams would be bottom half with the injuries we regularly have to tolerate.

Saying that though, we're not blameless because we tolerate consistently injured players for too long. The likes of Varane need to be moved on. Good players are no good if they're injured half the time.
Same as the effect when Jesus got injured too. I don’t mind criticism, but people have to apply it fairly and use the same criteria to judge.

I agree that we have played a part in our own issues, but more in that I think there needs to be an investigation almost of why players get so regularly injured. Not saying it’s exclusive to us but we definitely suffer regularly in comparison.

It’s a thin line with injuries though and knowing when to cut and run. Players that are deemed to be more quality will get more time, but are they playing enough to show it?

Amad? Hope he can come back soon and have a positive impact. He seems to be quite a talent

I miss that 'PL Injuries' app which had every player who was crocked on it with anticipated return times.

Is there any app / site that has up to date info on PL injuries these days?

Martinez 2-3 months, so either back in December or til the new year.
Reguilon to miss the next 3 games then if it's only til the break.

So Amrabat left back, Varane, Maguire, Evans and Lindelof as the 4 centerbacks, dalot right back. Not ideal.

Never a good sign when you see a player thread and the injury crisis thread at the top of the page at the same time.

Three left backs injured, including the one we signed on an emergency basis, is really something.

Lucky it’s coinciding with ‘easier’ fixtures I guess. Next few games should probably temper our expectations, just need wins.

Just pack it in and dissolve the club, we are just cursed at this point.

Really though, how does this happen?

Bloke on sky sports the other day giving it “yeah United have injuries but still, why do they only have 1 left back? You look at other teams and they have cover.”

There is bad luck and there are symptoms of poor injury/player fitness management. Specifically on the medical side serious questions need to be asked. The players in pre-season didnt look fit and these injuries are going from bad luck to poor handling of player fitness. The medical department needs to be pointed out as performing sub par and whether its changes in the staff or the structure/programme something needs to change.

This is so fecking infuriating.

Like other posters have said, the media and rival fans choose to ignore how fecked we are with injuries, yet on the radio this morning they were discussing the Arsenal injury ‘crisis’ and the Manchester 115’ers injury ‘woes’.

Pisstake. But at least our missing players will be fresh for the business end of the season:lol:
