The lazy fan and pundit analysis of our injury crisis is “everyone gets injuries so get on with it.” But when you break it down to see so many of our key players injured/unfit (on top of the non injury right wing debacle), we have been extremely unlucky with the pool of players we’ve been able to start and rotate so far this season. It must be having a detrimental effect on the team as a functional unit.
At the top levels 1% can be the difference between success and failure. I remember a friend who works in a job where he gets to meet managers and players (his company is a massive sponcor).
He asked what seperated Championship and EPL players and they said quite often it is tiny differences, a few percent that can be the difference between being a top EPL player and a good Championship player. Application, mental strength, physical ableness and drive seem like some of the qualitys.
But then you look at United at the moment, the percentages making it harder before we even train or get on the pitch and we are looking for a team who would be expecting/wanting to be challanging for top honors (and kick on from last season) to handle:
- Less then ideal pre season preperation (even Ericson mentioned it)
- Savage injuries
- Disruptions in games that cost us our entire defence
- Players in trouble for non footballing reasons
- Players we dont want who wont leave (how are they affecting dressingroom ?)
- Players attacking the manager online when they are told they are not training enough (player with history of this issue)
- Relying on youth or squad players (johnny evans, Reguilon etc) to just come into the squad without any disruption (we should still be able to play our game)
- Manager trying different things to address these issues
- No fit striker at the club, our manager has never had a regular quality starting striker
- No real options on bench to change things when things havent been going well ("just make a sub", looks at sub becnh and theres nothing there that will dramatically change a game!)
- Owners f**king around with the sale of the club which we dont know what affect its having to general stability of things (if you are a top player, how do you feel about this FFP limit and uncertainty, do you think it hinders Uniteds chances ?)
Ah but sure, isnt all this just an excuse ? None of this Pep or Klopp has to deal with , yet some of you think none of its relevant and we should just be beating Burnley cause we have players who on paper should be able to just click. Some of these issues would unsettle squads/teams, I think it would be a miracle if we were comfortably winning any games while all this is going on.
Incidentally the goal VAR decisions , while correct, were absolutely massive. The Subs of our entire CB against Arsenal was massive. These were potentially game defining moments where the momentumn of the games were in the balance. Nothing our manager has done deserved that.
And thats how it goes , sometimes when times are tough, the margins for error (and bad luck) are so small that you get punished badly.
I think if we get a full squad and we can find our feet we should see a completely different team.
