Film Indiana Jones 5

I'm surprised so many people thought the de-ageing stuff was good, it looked really bad whenever he was moving in the opening scenes.

As Kermode and Mayo were saying, they sat next to each other in the cinema and both came out with a different impression of it. Kermode thought it looked great, Mayo found it distracting. I think it looks great, there's a face replacement when he's riding the horse through New York which I found much more egregious.

I agree regarding it being distracting. When he was still it was fine, passable albeit still noticeable.

Don't know about others but I would say the ranking from top to bottom is probably:

Last Crusade
Raiders of The Lost Ark
Dial of Destiny
Temple of Doom
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

I think the middle is a good fit for the last film, I enjoyed it.

It doesn't deviate from the formula of the previous films which have made it such a successful franchise.

Just a good couple of hours in the cinema.
Fair enough. Not gonna argue about the taste, but In terms of good cinema, there's no way Dial is better than Temple.

Temple of the Doom enriched the original trilogy with weirder, almost gore horror like atmosphere, where sense of danger was strongest among all Indy movies. Dial of Destiny while fun was just nothing unique to remember. I'll probably forget it in few weeks, just like Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

My son said it was fun and much better than The Crystal Skull but not up to the original original 3. He said Harrison Ford as Indy was looking very old which was a bit sad.
Harrison Ford said this was what they were going for. A film about time catching up with Indy. I haven't watched it but saw an interview he did.

Thats probably the problem then. Because Indiana Jones is supposed to be a fun adventure series. Nothing too deep, and certainly not anything depressing. They should have just recast and done a bond style thing were someone takes over the role every so often. Indy in the 1930s fighting nazis is prefect. Seeing some old man drinking himself to death after he loses his son and his wife leaves him isnt really... fun.

feck that. Do it when Harrison Ford is dead, but right now, give the man the finish he wanted. You've got eternity to watch Chris Pratt or some other empty leather jacket cracking the whip while a director shuffles around their action figures to entertain a bunch a slack-jawed idiots stuffing their faces with sugary drinks and picking at holes in their brains.

Also it was... a lot of fun.

Ive not seen it, but Im getting mixed messages about it being a lot of fun. Cannes hated it and it was all down hill from there. It's currently struggling everywhere with the most notable place being China where it was shown on 25,000 screens on Friday and made a grand total of 900,000 USD. Which is about 36 bucks per screen. It just got beat by some supposed qanaon movie about chasing paedos. Even the high rotten tomatoes score is limited because so few people actually went to see it.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I have no desire to see Indy running around at 80 years old, depressed, old and fecked. Ive already seen Disney do that to Luke, Han, Obi Wan, Boba, and now Nick Fury is getting the old and fecked treatment with a dash of deconstruction. It's not really my thing.

Oh, and Chris Pratt as Indiana Jones? Dude, you should wash your keyboard out after typing such a thing.

I didn’t either. But it really was a fun movie that played with age, regret, holding onto shit, losing old friends and becoming lonely, cold, and lots more.

They’ve not gone the route of having him romp around like a superhero. It’s very well handled.

Really recommend it. No idea why it’s done poorly at the box office. Personally, I think it may be that Harrison Ford has left behind Indy and aged gracefully. Whereas Tom Cruise still lives his actual life with the vim of Ethan Hunt. The thoughts that you express (and I support) are kind of baked in as Ford looks and acts his age. You can’t just throw a switch and see him be a gymnastic adventurer again.

dude, thank you! Pratt is among the least interesting leading men I’ve ever seen. He has zero charisma, zero gravity. I hated the US Office, and I guess that’s why people like him. I found him bland and wooden in the Guardians movies. Surely they can cast a wider net.

I can 100% guarantee that’s not why people like him.

Thats not an indiana jones movie then. An Indiana Jones movie is supposed to be a throw back to the old adventure serials of 30s and 40s. Thats what people want from this franchise. And that, I suspect, is why it's done poorly at the box office. It would be like going to McDonald's to get a bottle of Buckfast. I mean, maybe Im wrong, like I said I haven't seen it. But I also have no interest in seeing it. And thats because of how it's been marketed, the leaks, the critics reception. And I dont even trust professional critics. I think they are all bought and paid for, and yet even the positive reviews were shitting on it.

But, theres always word of mouth. Maybe my impression is wrong, and everyone else like me will be convinced by those who have seen it to give it a shot. This weekend will be very telling. The Flash saw a 72.5% drop going into its second week, and so far I think Indy 5 is just above its domestic take over the weekend. So we'll see if its got legs to carry to that 800,000 to 1 billion WW to break even.

Wasn't it parks and rec he was in? Or was he in both? I have no idea, as I didn't watch either of them. Always meant to but never got around to it. Which is kind of annoying sometimes, cos theres a feck load of memes Im totally clueless on. To me Emily Blunt is married to "that guy with the white board".

It sounds like Ingmar Bergman’s version of Indy.

You are passing judgement on a movie you haven’t seen. I beg, If you can’t let art be created that you don’t like, let it pass you by.

It’ll be well loved once enough people have seen it. It was a really fun movie. As much fun as the originals, easily.

Well, he wasn’t even in it, and Guardians came before Jurassic World. Otherwise, sure.

Chris Pratt is an American actor best known for his roles in the hit comedy series Parks and Recreation and the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. He first made a name for himself as a supporting actor in The Office, playing Andy Dwyer from 2006 to 2013. In this role, Chris Pratt brought a unique blend of charm, humor, and likability to the screen that quickly won over fans of the show.

Can you find a clip of him in it? I’ll offer an unreserved apology if I’m wrong. But I really have no recollection of him being in that show. Nor does IMDB. Or Wikipedia. Or YouTube.

Just so it’s clear: I don’t like Chris Pratt and I think he would be an awful choice to be the new Indy. I think that’s what this thread is about. Am I confusing the Office with Parks and Rec? Maybe. I didn’t like either show.

That’s ok. Just admit you were wrong and move on.
Just Fcuking with you x

The weird thing is I have hated Pratt for years because of The Office, so my whole life is thrown into question now. I looked on IMDb and didn’t find him listed for the Office, which means I’m wrong. Wrong! I am wrong.

It’s all good. You had me doubting my mind for a while there too. After your link I honestly thought maybe Parks and Rec had stolen the character.

Anywho, we agree. He’s devoid of any charisma and is not a movie star. I think he was brilliant in P&R though. Different strokes for different folks.

That article I quoted also made that mistake though! Very strange!

Yeah, isnt that what most people do when they see trailers and reviews? The problem isnt letting art be art, the problem is using one thing to be another. You dont go to see Indy for deep drama about the meaning of it all anymore than you go to see a Richard Linklater movie for a fun switch your brain off action adventure with witty one liners.

But let's just ask the question, is this movie about Indy dealing with the end of his life, the death of his son and the resulting end of his marriage? Is he a bitter lonely old man drinking himself to death with no hope or enjoyment in anything? If this is true so far, then it's just more of the same. Because for some reason Disney writers think that this is the only possible outcome to getting older. And I just want to watch that.

If Im wrong, well thats on the studio for not letting me know what it actually was. And clearly, Im not the only one who thinks so. You say it's good, but people tell me rise of Skywalker is good. So, you see my dilemma. If my view is shared by the general movie going audience, then thats why it's failing at the box office. I dont believe that it's sexism, or ageism, or "owning the libs" or whatever other nonsense the YouTubers are generating clicks over. I think it's just a simple case of people wanted the movie to be one thing, and they dont think it's that based on everything they have seen and heard.

But hey, you got enjoy it, right? And thats really all that matters in the end. An enjoyable movie is worth its weight in gold these days, even if not a lot of other people agree. I mean, I liked hateful 8. Even though it was one of QTs best, and I get shit about that all the time

took the kids to see it yesterday.

Good fun, fast paced and didnt lean into sentiment or emotion too much in spite of some of the backstory/context.

Didnt mess too much with the elements that made the first movies good

about a 6/10 and worth a watch on a rainy day

Right, box office stats and other people's learned opinions. Well, I'm not going to tell you how to have fun. Sounds like you're already very busy enjoying yourself. Think I might take my Dad to see it tomorrow, although I might suggest pouring over the box-office statistics instead.

You seem, a bit miffed. Is everything alright at home?

Master filmmaker Ingmar Bergman’s “Indiana Jones and the Chess Board of Regret.” Indy finds himself in a crepuscular world populated by ghosts from his last. A mysterious figure in black challenges Indy to a no-holds-barred chess tourney, to the death. The chess pieces are made of living snakes.

Honestly have no idea what this means.

Go watch the fun movie. It’s fab.

It's from The Seventh Seal, I actually could see a take on this working for an Indy film. Howeve, this is referencing the half-witted thoughts of someone who's not seen the film but put considerable effort into its reviews, box office performance and having a strong opinion without having a frame of reference.

This turned out better than I expected. That's not saying a lot, as my expectations were very low, but it had plenty of enjoyable moments. Probably doesn't warrant a trip to the pictures, given the cost these days, but worth keeping an eye out for when it arrives on streaming.

Shame the special effects during the action sequences were so poor. Appreciate Indy is no longer going to be doing any stuntwork at his age, but the CGI-filled set pieces just felt so flat. Kinda like a Marvel sequence, where loads is happening, but nothing really registers. The tuk-tuk chases definitely had that feel, and it's amazing to think the sidecar scenes in The Last Crusade looked much better and more realistic so many years ago.

Still, worth a watch for Indy fans. There are loads of nods back to the older films, without it being too in your face or gimmicky. Really liked the choice of artefact, and the twist took me by surprise.

Solid 3 out of 5.

It's surprisingly good and enjoyable. Ford is as charismatc as ever, Phoebe WB is her usual wonderful self, and all the rest of the cast works extremely well. It's simply a pure fun, well paced adventure film with a ridiculous premise, and a hilariously over the top finale, but it works so so well. It's most definitely worth the trip to the cinema, it's very unlike most films that are made these days.

I'd say this ranking is about right.

Isn't the Cannes film festival all about the weird independent films about weird shit, like a man whose head is made of cheese and he goes off to join the army, and does really well, but he gets too close to a bomb and his head melts off, and then he goes back home and everyone is like "look at that guy with melted cheese for a head, what a cnut" and then he tries to commit suicide but can't hang himself as the noose keeps slipping on the melted cheese and falling off.

Be a director called Timothy de la Wanksock-Jizzmonkey, film that in black and white, and in Serbian or Estonian. Guaranteed 20 minute standing ovation.

Indiana Jones isn't for Cannes where they judge you on how the camera was 40mm too far left on that shot, it's for the 40/50 year olds who watched them as a kid and think Indy was pretty fecking cool.

Similar thoughts on the ranking, though it's probably a tie between Dial of Destiny and Temple of Doom for third spot. Crystal Skull could fall off the list entirely, and well done for putting Last Crusade at the top.

It's very old-fashioned, I read unfair comparisons to Mission Impossible which seem to somewhat miss the point, it's a deliberate throwback. That said, I genuinely did not know what was going to happen at the end, which is quite unusual these days!
