India Tour of South Africa

Re the pitch, it's actually behaving slightly better the past half hour or more. Either that or Shami and Bhuvi are utterly comfortable.:D

Shami might have played the match winning innings!!

Hope this is not the case. Some balls are going haywire. So I think the new ball will behave differently

Bhuvi should start going for it now. Can't really trust Ishant. Once the new ball comes, its gonna be over in no time

India have this in the bag now. Shami showing how a tailender should bat in this sort of situation, probably has taken India over the line with that knock.

Despite the pitch a great batting performance from India. Where has that been all series? Still hoping SA can pull something out of the bag but they've got an uphill struggle from here

Too shit a pitch. This should be called off. Virat will show he is braindead though and argue with referee and Umpires that we played on same pitch, so they should too. Swap the positions and he won't want to carry on. That's what one needs to think. Put yourself in opposition's position and think what they will do. 2-0 or 2-1 is not going to make any difference anyway.

Put anyone else there, and they would obviously want to carry on. The same goes for situations during bad light and all. Doesn't have much to do with Virat in particular.
Thing is, the pitch has been this way since a very long time, and if it is going to be called off, should have been done way earlier.

I am calling that because he will be all outraged about it and think it is conspiracy to stop India winning. Otherwise, yes, possible bowling team will want to carry on. They have nothing to lose in this situation.
I didn't watch much of today's match but reading that India too were offered to stop but they carried on.
The safety is paramount and if refs and Umpires deem the pitch dangerous, match should be called off.

Umpires probably need reprimanding over this.

Should have been off early in the day, but they wait until someone actually gets hurt (and at that gets hurt for something completely unrelated to the pitch) to call the players off.

Incompetent.

SA cowering from a fight. At least India have showed some balls in contrast to when SA were in India and constantly whining.

Nah, it wasn't that bad during the post-lunch session. One or two hits on the gloves and not much more.

If India are 2-0 up here and Indian batsman gets hit on head and given what has happened multiple times earlier in this game...what will be India team be doing? Do you seriously believe they will want to carry on?

Imagine if India had done that , like gavaskar said we would have been called sissy. Doubt the play would have called off it was India chasing instead of SA. First they prepare a shit pitch and now when it backfires they can't handle it.

SA didn't seem keen to get off the pitch when India were 140-6, why was that?

Exactly. fecking pussies.

Because the offer to stop in this scenario is always offered to batting team first and if they want to carry on, rarely will bowling team deny it. Risk is with batting team of getting injured. Only if pitch is slippery around crease area or in outfield, bowling team will complain.

Lol last time we were in India, none of the Indian players and fans wanted to discuss pitches.
Anyways hypocrisy aside, this is probably the worst Wanderers pitch I've ever seen. It's usually just a hard bouncy surface with a bit of grass but this one looked like a lawn and the top surface is just crumbling. Two new groundsmen at Centurion and the Wanderers, clearly they have a lot of work to do, neither of those surfaces have been up to standard.
If I was Faf, I would just offer India the victory and move on. 2-1, 2-0, what's the difference? Australia to come in March, more important to focus on that.

Was that the pitch or just a bouncer that hit the batsman?

Lifted a bit more than it should have but mostly poor technique. Elgar standing out of his crease and trying to play on the front foot for some stupid reason when he knows how the pitch is behaving.

I can understand both sides of this case. India will argue that they themselves battled it out without it being stopped which is a fair point. But at the end of the day, two wrongs don't make a right. This pitch is dreadful and dangerous. Simply not safe for players regardless of match situation.

Haven't watched the first two days but this should have been called off 5 hours ago when batsmen were getting hit with good length deliveries rather than at the end of the day when Elgar misjudged a short of length delivery (8.5m from stumps). Indian batsmen were usually swaying away from such balls all day. Or in the case of Rahane, Bhuvi and Shami - they were moving away from the line of the ball to counter attack. Whenever they tried to play defensive shots, they got hit several times. The ball getting softer around 55-60 overs helped as well.

Don't understand the comments about SA walking off (they didn't, right?) or hypothetical scenarios if the shoe was on the other foot. It's the responsibility of the umpires to assess whether a pitch is fit for playing. Maybe batting teams were once offered that years ago but it's all in the hands of umpires now (similar to bad light decisions). I don't think captains need to agree for the match to be called off? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Player safety is always paramount and any pitch that endangers batsmen with variable bounce is not fit to play. Saying that, I don't think any subcontinent team would get favorable comments if they complained of such a thing. Subcontinent pitches can be doctored to spin from day 1 but it's tougher playing variable bounce when bowlers hurl at 140K. India will argue why they were made to play twice, especially 60 overs today before umpires stepped in. There were some good performances (Kohli, Pujara, Amla, Rabada, Vijay, Bhuvi) in this match but it's disappointing the pitch made life harder unfairly on the batsmen.

Honestly, we're not complaining. We've played on because we want to prove ourselves in adverse conditions - no hypocrisy here. Just SA running off as soon as they looked likely to lose.

Absolutely ridiculous that this has been going on. Anyone who thinks this should go on is an idiot - similar to the Sri Lankan debacle in Delhi.

Safety over a game of cricket.

The umpires should be reprimanded as Ninjafletch says. The number of times Amla took it in the knuckle playing a length ball just in the first few overs was telling - he was just not able to read the bounce.

Are we going to wait for someone to get seriously injured? What exactly is the discussion after the Indian/SA players have been hit? Happened about a dozen times. "Oh, he's not dead yet.."?

Pretty much every third post from you in this thread has been clueless.

With dangerous pitches, they consult both sides before making the decision. Obviously SA don't want to carry one so India have to be oblige. If the situation was reversed, like you've said, the match would still be going and India looking to reduce the deficit.

Indian team manager: The match referee called me at tea time in case the wicket got dangerous, in which case both the captains would be consulted. We had the view that the wicket has been the same for all three days. Today we had the highest strike rates and the least wickets. We would like to continue playing. The match referee was fearful that in case the new ball was going to be taken, it might be behave dangerously. The ball that hit Dean Elgar on his helmet was the reason play was called off today. We are willing to play. Umpires are the final judges on the fitness of the ground, regardless of the views of either of the captains. The final decision lies with the umpires.

We have children in charge of the national team.

Every third post? Might not agree on the pitch situation but how is "every third post clueless"? Who cares about what you say if the actually fecking players continued on.

Holding has already said it should have been called off by now. We've just been lucky no one has been seriously hit and India are desperate for a win, so want to keep going. Once a few South African batsmen get hit, there's no question they will want to come off and then it's down to the umpires. We're also only on day three, it might get even worse tomorrow.
You called it
