Ice Hockey

to a point.
I have been to 4 Leafs game this year, and the atmosphere is shite.
It's all corporate these days in the lower bowl of the stadium. $200 seats and it''s all suits in them on business, not true fans.

A Leaf game can't really be considered a sporting event, it's really just a corporate marketing event. All the companies buy tickets for their clients and regular joe's can't get good seats. But watching a game in Canada, say in Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, and, when the Jets were still around, Winnipeg, is where its at...

Oh, and for another thing, can we make it a RedCafe rule that hockey can never be called "Ice Hockey" again????

A hockey game that takes place on ice is called Hockey and a hockey game that takes place on grass is called Field Hockey...

Bit of a difficult shout that one I'm afraid Red... Here we are on a Manchester United fan site, which is an English club, I may be wrong on this, but I presume that the host for the site is English? I'm not to up on these sort of things, but in England hockey on ice is Ice Hockey. Hockey played on grass or astroturf is hockey for the Brits.

I was just about to say one thing, when a odd fact came to my mind.... Britain is the only nation to win both the Field and Ice Hockey Olympic gold medals.... Wow there you go todays odd fact...

Anyway, I'm in agreement with you though that hockey played on ice is hockey and that on the other surface is field hockey, but we may have to accept that the heretics in the UK might just revolt against this idea.

The Avs is going to beat the Oilers again tomorrow Tribec;)

And Leafs fans are horrible.

Two parter this one, I disagree with the first quote, but of that I would!! It's almost like asking me to agree that West Ham will be United on Sunday... No brainer my answer to that one.

As for the second, I think I know of 2 Leaf fans who are decent, and both of them are over here in the UK. Leaf fans remind me of the Dippers, in that they expect there team to win everything and yet they never do. Long may the comparison continue

so it shall be

I'm the only mod who cares about hockey so my word is law on this ;)

Hey, be careful there. There are actually 2 types of Leafs fans. there are those that are idiotic and think we have a shot to win every year because we signed a journeyman defenceman for depth. Then there are those that cheer for the team with the knowledge that they can be competitive, but not really challenge for for Lord Stanley's Cup. I happen to be in the second group.

Good to know, but unfortunately it seems that most Leafs fans I see/meet fall into the first category.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuump.

This is my new sport. The current state of football (and its fans) have been ruining my enjoyment for the game. Moyes' United was the final push I needed.

Niall might have an issue with that ;)

I've been to about 10 NHL games now. All were either at the Caps, and more recently, the Ducks.

Not a big fan of the TV timeouts I'll have to say; the players all just standing around leaning on their sticks.
Also maybe I haven't been watching often enough but I find the constant substituting to be confusing.

I wonder if there's a big difference in the experience north of the border..... anyone care to educate me?

The only NHL game I've been to was the Flyers@Rangers, sorry. I agree that the constant changes is a bit of a barrier to begin with, until you get familiar with a team.

May as well ask this in here: are any Swedes slightly nervous about the OEL & Karlsson pairing? (I understand the health and form of the forwards is of much greater concern right now). I get the idea of keeping teammates together on the other pairings and that OEL & Karlsson should be magnificent on the PP together, but wouldn't they be much more effective apart at even strength? What kind of minutes do you expect them to play?

I love OEL's defensive game & am really looking forward to seeing how he deals with the responsibility, but having Zbyněk Michálek alongside him is still so important to his game. He's had good performances without him this season (alongside Connor Murphy, a rookie), but more mediocre ones than the previous shortened season, too. Michálek completely frees OEL allowing him to make the odd mistake. Not spreading the offence around more (at a time when goals could be at a premium in that team) seems like a way to handcuff both players. And if there is a costly mistake in that pairing, it seems like the first team capable of forcing it will come when it's too late, in the knockouts.

Not that nervous about OEL-Karlsson. Salivating at the prospect of watching them together, simply ridiculous skating skills on the backend. My first impression was to be nervous since they're pretty offensive minded but now I'm hoping OEL will be able to anchor that pairing in a more Lidström-like role. Sink or swim.

Karlsson will be double-shifted on the PP and play mostly with Alfredsson there according to reports in the press.

Can't wait for the first game tomorrow.

I think the last NHL game I saw in person was during the Edmonton Oiler Dynasty of the 1980s. It was cold as feck in Edmonton and our seats were in the nosebleed section. But I'm pretty sure I got to see Dave Semenko crush someone and Gretzky and Kurri scored so I was happy. FFS, I think it was even against the Leafs.

Many thanks, interesting about the PP. I can't wait either.

That story with Bäckström's grandmother sounded hilarious until the update that she was unhappy with how her quotes had been used. A shame she couldn't see the funny side, but understandable.

In the NHL, Bäckström is Sweden's top scorer this season, one point ahead of Erik Karlsson. But although 'Bäckis', 26, averages nearly a point per game for the Washington Capitals, he has an unexpected critic before the Sochi Olympics.

His own grandmother, Britt, 84, delivers an acrimonious swipe at his grandson.

- "He will make a fool of himself. He has played so poorly for a long time," says Britt in an interview with Östersundsposten .

But it is not just the forward who is criticized by grandma. The entire team has been under the ice, says Grandma.

- "On the whole , they've got no game."

And she should know. In the interview, Britt tells that kaffekokarn runs hot at night and she'll check all NHL games .

- "I'm up and looking at some periods like that. When it's bad I go to bed," says grandmother to Östersundsposten .

As in last week's game against the New York Islanders .

- "I saw two periods, then I went to bed. It was 0-0. And what do you know, they lost 1-0.

But his grandson under-performing is not Britt's only concern for the tournament. Even off the ice she fears the worst.

- "Now I'll be worried . Both the mother and father to Nicklas has gone there. I'm terrified. They will blow everything up, I think."

 Yeah, that was amazing.

Shame about the injuries to Henrik Sedin and to a lesser extent Franzén (not to mention the Hedman snub), but I still think we have good shot in this tournament. On paper though, Canada is just disgusting as usual and the US and Russia look strong as well. Hoping that big ice will suit Sweden's puck possession game and that Lundqvist will stand on his head, but it's difficult to predict a hockey tournament with single knock-out games. Bad bounces and goalie performances are so important in hockey compared to say football.

TV Timeouts: it's what it says on the tin.
I'm no expert but when I asked why all the players weren't playing, they were just standing around - one of my friends pointed to a red beacon that was lit up near the bench/dugout and he said that when that's lit then it's a TV timeout, so they can show commercials on the TV.

It pretty much sums up one of the main things I dislike about American (and in this case, Canadian) sports.

Yeah, I understand it's a major revenue earner, but which came 1st; the players large salaries, or the ads that allow for the large salaries.

Yep that is retarded and would annoy the hell out of me if I was watching live. Ice hockey has 4 quarters already, so plenty of time to jam in rubbish ads without having to stop the game every few minutes.

Not sure if serious, Dargonk.

 fair enough. though it would have been a deliciously sly dig at american sport in general.

Lemieux scored a great touchdown in the fourth period of that hockey game and Jagr got another homer.

Speaking of Jagr, can't believe he's still playing in the Olympics. Not to mention Nedved, he played the 94 final in Lillehammer 20 years ago.. representing Canada. Less than two hours to go until Sweden - Czech Rep!

I was amazed at Jagr earlier this year when I realized he was still playing, Hockey's version of Ryan Giggs. Incredible stuff to be playing such a rough game after so long.

Yeah definitely impressive. One of my all-time favorite players for sure.

Did anyone watch Sens vs Habs today? Probably the best game this season. 4-1 to the Sens with less than 5 minutes to go. The habs scored three and took it to overtime. The goal to make 4-4 was scored with 0.3 seconds left on the clock. Then they scored again. Crazy amount of chances wasted throughout the game.

Having said that, the refs should've skipped the formalities and wore Montreal jerseys  The fourth goal should not have counted.

Yep, great game. Almost compares to last year, watching game 7 Toronto-Boston...though nothing will beat that moment; watching the Leafs go up with a bunch of Toronto fans thinking they're about to go on to win the cup. Epic collapse, disbelieve, silence, and then just one guy screaming 'feck!' Never had so much fun watching a game as a neutral

I don't know how but Detroit are looking good for a playoff spot all of a sudden. Mike Babcock deserves coach of the year honours if he pulls it off. He has been playing mostly with an AHL team all season.

Missing the playoffs wouldn't be the worst thing. Maybe Holland would finally clear out the old guys.

I feel like it may happen anyway, Nyquist, Jurco, Tatar, Sheahan, Mrazek and Dekeyser have all done really well this season. Guys like Daniel Alfredsson et al won't get another contract. Weiss I feel may be moved on, his contract is a pain in the arse.
