ICC T20 World Cup 2021

15 years since the format was introduced, this is the first T20I ever between Bangladesh and England.

I'd say i'm surprised.. but it is the ECB.

Yep, QdK comes out of this looking really bad, especially considering the history of our country specifically.

Any idea what happens now.. will they come to some understanding or is he done from the WC (or SA cricket, period)?

It's an unpopular choice these days, but I would want Root in this team, and at no. 3.

Given it's a low scoring tournament, I'd probably favour Root ahead of Malan as well. But they do see the latter as the accumulator, I just don't rate his ability against spin.

I wouldn’t want to speculate at this point. Guess it’s all going to depend on how QdK explains his reasoning - maybe even come out and apologise/back track a little. If he doesn’t, I can see him being sent home from the WC and potentially also being done with the NT. Might not be any coming back from this - least not in our country and everything we’ve been through in terms of racism.

I was thinking today about the nature of T20 and how the WC is implemented. T20 (if you ignore the hundred) is by far the most random of the formats. Within a single match a couple of individual errors, or even just runs of the green, can cost you the match. In this WC we have groups of 6 where only 2 go through then a straight knock out. It feels like both of these actually accentuate this increased random factor and right now I don't think you can actually say the team that wins the WC is necessarily the best team. I was thinking that making the playoffs best of 3 would be quite interesting. Thoughts?

Please note in the above, I'm not suggesting the results are random, I'm saying in any sport luck/randomness plays a part and in T20 this factor is higher than in ODI/tests.

Yeah, it's a case of horses for courses for me, as well. Root's a superb player of spin and in clutch situations he can eke out runs better than most. He's going to go along at 80 - 100 strike rate but that probably won't hold England back too much.

Malan does have a few more gears to go into but not sure he's going to get the chance to express himself. He stands too tall when playing spin and doesn't use his feet enough. Hope that he proves me wrong.

Got to admire how Woakes bowls across all three formats. One of the smartest bowlers around.

Same. Would also have Root in, given the conditions. Bowling would be a major plus too - he's as good as Livingstone with the ball.

Yeah. It's the equivalent of a German athlete rejecting an anti-fascism message in the 1970s. It's a bad look.

I'm not watching but from the scorecard I think Namibia are going too slowly here. Think Scotland have a good chance.

Get in Namibia!! Had a feeling they'd win this.

Would love for them to somehow go on and beat one of bigger teams.

Damn. Really hope it doesn't come to that.

Makes totally sense from his perspective. Sort these issues out before the start of the tournament, don't go the CSA route and give players an ultimatum right before a match.

Sad world that he has to tell the world he's not racist just for not taking the knee in aid of a movement that's achieved absolutely nothing.

But that's the world these days, a strange one.

Time to sack off taking the knee and start educating kids as soon as they start school that all genders, colours and races should be treated equally. Rocket science it isn't.

I'm afraid it's a bit late to change the minds of bigots in the current generation.

Fair enough, he's like 40 or something right? Was bound to happen at some point. Absolute legend thoughh

42. Past his last legs. He's like a dying dog these days. I'll always love him for what he did for us but he should have been retired years ago. It's insane that he's been picked and is starting matches for us.

Number of established teams have regressed.. the small teams have become better but not enough to compete. Been a crap World Cup so far.

Of all the big teams, it feels like the only ones who have actually improved are England and Pakistan. WI, SA, Aus, SL, India feel like they've regressed. NZ are always difficult to gauge.

Back to back good Powerplays from the top order.

Can't even remember the last time that happened. Asalanka the difference.

160+ and I'd fancy Sri Lanka in this one. Don't rate the Aussie batting at all, but Maxwell is a huge wicket.

Shame, some very ordinary batting after the Powerplay. No idea why the lad in great form at number three smashed it towards the leg side with three on the boundary?

Sigh. And there's the good old top order batting collapse.

Off late it's the lower order mostly rescuing the batting. Here's hoping they get close to 150+

This world cup is so boring, not helped that it's being played in some of the most soulless environments.

Feel like I might as well be watching/following a computer generated tournament.

Hopefully it picks up, but if this is the format we're letting test cricket die for, it's a fecking waste.

The covid situation / playing it in a desert is a huge issue with it to be fair.

Full stadiums in India with travelling fans (England would have took quite a few etc) would have been good fun

Yeah, what could have been an iconic world cup (especially after how well England hosted the ODI in 2019) has been reduced to a sponsor-appeasing damp squib.
