In a match with such tight margins those extra 17 runs they conceded over 340 totally made the difference.
NZ do this every ICC tournament. Start really well and then fall off so much that they are one defeat away from not even making the next round/semis, and then somehow still reach the final which they go on to lose by small margins.
They got lucky with the draw. Bangladesh, Netherlands and Afghanistan in 3 of your first 4 is a dream. England being shit also helped

People are already counting India, SA and Oz as 3 semi-finalists. Afghanistan can also still make it but I guess folks don't see it as likely.
Scenario you are suggesting would actually in most probability bring NRR into play and we could have a situation with 3 teams on 10 points with 5 wins or even 3 teams with 6 wins .
